Pokemon: The Original Series Talk

Anyone know why the first Pokemon movie isnt on dvd/blu ray? Or why it was discontinued? Don't feel like hooking up my VCR to watch it.
Cartoon Network at the beginning of this year aired the digitally remastered version. It's possible that they're prepping a new release this year.

Well, for those that are aware of what's currently going on with the anime (Japan-wise)....

I'm still surprised that they haven't given Serena an goal or a career path to aspire to as of yet. Normally, with our past female protagonists, they would know by now (based on how far the anime is at in Japan) on what they want to do.

I'm also surprised that she hasn't caught another pokemon yet, though I guess that has more to do with the fact that they don't know what to make Serena aspire to and I doubt that they'll have her aim towards becoming a Rhyhorn racer.

I'm hoping that Ash catches another pokemon soon and that Team Flare is involved in this season's main arc "pre pokemon league"

I'm calling it right now, Pokémon X/Y is doing a great job. That rematch totally wasn't what I thought it would be. I thought both Pikachu and Fletchling would win, but using Sleep Powder? Something that wasn't used last time? Brilliant!

Also, a very simple and sweet explanation on how Serena knows Ash. It'll be really fun to see where their friendship goes.

So what did you all think?

Not sure if it's been posted or not but Pokémon will be on Netflix on Saturday.

another good episode today! Serena and Ash's backstory gets flushed out (very nice btw) and a Rhyhorn race. Cool!

I'm not sure how far they'll play the possible angle of Ash and Serena getting together, but it is a nice change of pace, and something I'll look forward to watching develop.

Today was another solid episode. Was worried when I saw Furfrou, but it turned out alright.

I like how Serena doesn't know what she wants to do with her life. It's a nice change from May, Dawn, and Iris. Any guesses on what she might become?

The only downpoint was Bonnie, I don't like the whole "fixing up my brother" thing. We had enough of a player with Brock, we don't need a matchmaker.

So, another good episode today. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the first time that all 3 Pokémon Starters ACTUALLY all came from the Professor? I thought that was nice.

I really need to catch up with this show. Just can't make the time for it yet.

It's totally worth it! Definitely watch it!

Also, yay, I was right!

Was reading through past pages of this thread and decided to give xy a chance and watched the first episode. As someone who like most loved the original, I havent watched any season probably since johto, gotta say the nostalgia factor definitely kicked in watching xy. Cant believe how far the animation has come since those first few episodes of the series. Enjoyed the first episode of xy, looking forward to catching up with the season.

What if they stopped having pokemon in the tv show say their names when they talk and hired Dee Bradley Baker to create "animal" sounds for them instead? Would anybody be up for that? Or would it be more acceptable if that happened in a live action pokemon movie if they went for a more grounded and realistic approach?

No, I like having the Pokémon say their names, it honestly feels more realistic.

Another good episode today! It could've been terrible, but it worked out great.

Who else like Serena's reaction to Penelope? It really sold how she feels about Ash. Hope they keep this up!

What's the difference between the Black/White Saga and this new one? What are the main differences/improvements?

Um....better team (Serena, Clements, Bonnie), Ash is acting like his trainer self of old, animation is tighter in my opinion. That's pretty much it for now, we're still only a few episodes in.

Man, I used to love this series as a kid and I still watch it sometimes but Ash is such a pain in the ass as a protagonist.......

I had checked out the Pokemon Origins OVA and despite it having time constraints, it was still overall a far superior adaptation of Pokemon to this for a number of reasons. So while some of you might enjoy the regular anime, I definitely recommend checking out Pokemon Origins on Hulu when you get the chance.

It really shows how different Ash and Red are as characters despite Ash being loosely inspired by Red.

Not to mention.... In Origins, Team Rocket is actually competent unlike in this anime where they constantly get made into buffoons

I see. That sounds cool.

Sweetre: I'm sure both shows have plusses and minuses. And yes, Black and White may have been weak, but X/Y is back to what Pokémon should be. I've heard nothing but good things about Origins, but I still like Ash. And not every protagonist needs to be a BA warrior. And Team Rocket aren't always buffoons. That's one thing that B&W did right, Team Rocket was more Black Ops in that series, and in X/Y they're trying to raise a Pokémon army. So at least they're trying harder.

Ramsay: Yes, yes it is. It is totally worth the watch.

My main problem though is that anytime Ash shows growth as a character, the restart button gets pressed on him. Nonetheless I'm gladd to hear X/Y is quality stuff and I might just watch as I still have a soft spot for the Anime........A very small soft spot.

As for Origins, It's main flaws are that due to it being 4 episodes all the big Gym battles and stuff get truncated and some might say Red is slightly bland but it works for Red in the sense that he's an Avatar for the players of the game boy game. Another flaw would be how he sometimes deus ex machinas his way through a couple of his victories when he should have lost.

Nonetheless, I'll definitely give X/Y a chance since I'm glad to hear its quality stuff and that Team Rocket has become competent. But please tell me, when Ash shows growth, do they quickly regress him or maintain that growth?

No he's the trainer he was pre-Unova. He still loses battles, but their justified losses. He knows what he's doing here.

Unova was the worst in this regard. They showed him FORGETTING to bring more than one Pokémon to a gym battle! Are you serious? That was the worst.

Thankfully, the upgraded him back here.

I see, I guess I'll have to check it out. Hopefully Ash doesnt annoy me this time lol.

He still has his annoying moments, but it's because he has that childlike enthusiasm a lot of us relate to.

Definitely give it a chance.

Well for those who are actually still keeping tabs for this show, let alone on what's going on with the Japanese episodes (that are much farther ahead)...this show is quickly losing the potential quality that it once showed at the start of it.

It wouldn't be terrible to spoil the fact that the Pokemon that Ash and company have right now...are still the same many episodes from the recent US episode.

Serena is like the first female protagonist, within the entire series, who has yet to be given a major goal or occupation to strive for, and she still only has one pokemon, making her the only trainer to have gone on for so long without having captured a second pokemon and none of Ash's or Clemont's have evolved as of yet....and it looks like the series is going to miss the ball with utilizing the game's villainous team: Team Flare, for the show.

Man, bring back the guys that did Pokemon: Origins. That was an actual show worth watching.

That sounds worrying :(

Is Team Flare good or are they not in yet?
