saw it last night
thought it was pretty good, one thing that left me puzzled

why did david infect charlie ?

I think he wanted to see what would happen. David's character could generally be summarized as amoral curiosity, which made him a bit of a caricature of us.

"None one knows for sure....but I intend to find out!"

Did someone say something about the home release being delayed until next year? I know I haven't been completely positive about this film, but I'm fair enough to give it another chance by getting the blu-ray. I really like Ridley's commentaries.

Jeezus I hope not. A Holiday release at the latest is what I'm expecting.

No, he was looking for what Weyland was after and was essentially following his orders for most of the film. David did not know what effect the substance would have had on a human (whether it be good or bad) so he tested it on Charlie. It clearly did not do what Weyland wanted it to do...

Can't believe that didn't occur to me, but it makes sense. David brought the capsule on board the ship and tested it on Charlie to see what it would do. David must have assumed it was the miracle cure Weyland was searching for, but need a guinea pig to test it on first.

David said "big things have small beginnings", before deliberately infecting Charlie with alien DNA. His programming seemed to require him to elicit some sort of unwitting consent, which he did. He checked that Shaw had had sex with Charlie before telling her that she had been impregnated with an alien lifeform, and then he was at pains to ensure that the alien embryo was not aborted.

As an amoral machine, David can't really be said to be responsible for his actions, but I don't think the movie really allows for the contention that he had no idea what the effect of his actions would be.

And I hate saying this (because it seems dismissive to those who didn't enjoy it), but it always seems like subtle or very allegorical films often suffer from a great amount of criticism initially. As someone else pointed out, Blade Runner was quite panned originally.

I dunno, I'm not at all saying everyone will love Prometheus in 20 years, but it is a shame most people don't seem to judge these kinds of films in quite the same way as they do others.
This x 1000

I really didn't like Blade Runner--I thought it was dumb and boring. But after watching it again...and again (because I really wanted to give it a chance), it really clicked with me and a lot of my criticisms sorta melted away and now I love it.

I don't know if Prometheus will be the same in the future, but it's definitely the kind of movie that people are going to be split on with first impressions.

I hope that includes the DC. I don't want to wait an extra year just so Fox can squeeze fanboys twice. We shall see.
If the rumor that The Avenger's DC is going to be theatrical, and it turns out to be true and a success, Fox will probably consider slapping the DC for this in theaters.

If there was internet back then, and it was exactly like it is now, it would get ripped apart for being slow and hiding the Xeno for the most part. It would've faded into obscurity like The Thing prequel, or Pandorum. The internet sadly has changed the way we remember movies :csad:

But the statement doesn't necessarily mean that David believes Halloway will turn into a monster, only that grave consequences - like, helping to dismantle the Ottomon Empire and remove some of Germany's firepower via the Arab Revolt (a "sideshow", as it's called in Lawrence of Arabia) - can arise from seemingly innocuous circumstances. Imagine, a tiny blob of genetic goop granting immortality (as Weyland hopes), or giving birth to a massive alien creature (as eventually happens).

Given that the goop could kill Halloway, David's programming likely did require some form of "consent", thought I highly doubt he had any idea what would come of it until Halloway got sick. From that point - and after making the likely assumption that Halloway and Shaw had slept together, David would've been equally curious to see what would come of their sexy-time.

I didn't read it as him checking with her before tellng her, but comfirming what he already surmised. They boinked, and Halloway "infected her".

Hated Blade Runner the first time I saw it and now it is in my top 3 movies of all time.

the main reason I liked Prometheus is because it reminded me so much of Bladerunner , and if anything it shows how brillant that film is .

However , when it comes to judging this work on its own merits I personally can't flat out say its bad or good. I kinda of look at this film in fragments and judge it by what I thought worked and what didn't.

While the story itself is a standard sci-fi horror, the themes of creation, life, humanity are great

While most of the characters are pretty weak , David is great, and Shaw is ok, though I think Rapace adds alot more to it then was probably on the page.

While the actions of the crew are at times down right stupid, the scenes where they get thrashed are really scary and well done.

While I felt the film was weakest in the third act, The sequence in which David discovers the control room and see's the hologramic map is well scored and a great short film on its own.

While Guy Pierce, the guy who looks like Tom Hardy , and the two dumb guys who get slaughtered in the cave are totally useless as characters ,as far as I'm concerned, Theorn, Rapace, Fassbender, and Ilba are all interesting

While the space jokey's weren't anything memorable as beings, their goals and motivations are interesting.

So for me , Prometheus is a film of contradictions. There are parts which are first rate but then other parts which make you wish the writers put more effort into the characterization and motivations of the crew .

Bladerunner was able to balance the motivations and the larger themes at the same time , while this film focuses on one at the expense of the other. However, the film has stayed with me for the past week, and its really great to listen to both sides discuss and debate the film .

And I suppose the October date at the end of the credits is speaking about the DVD/BR release?
