Rockstar Red Dead Redemption

Damn. Lets hope they are working on gta6 already despite the not so friendly office environment.

Makes me feel like actually boycotting the game, given their treatment, feels wrong to buy something and give income to people that have treated their employees so badly.

The sad thing is that boycotting the game may hurt the employees more, as it would impact their year end bonuses, and could also lead to mass layoffs. The best thing to do about this is to make noise on social media to force the studio's hand.

The strangest thing about all this to me is Rockstar's bewilderment at the fact that employees are hesitant about speaking out about this out of fear for their jobs.

Un-rest and dis-comfort at work is always going to be difficult to approach and try & bring about positive change as the employer has all the cards. Rockstar at this point wouldn't expect any recoil, if enough employees stand together, that's when action MAY happen.

Yeah anyway, super ****ing pumped to play this tomorrow. Unfortunately I have to work so I can’t until after then.

So I'm planing on playing this and I have some doubts:

Is is single player?

Do one needs Gold to play it on Xbox?

I may or may not have started lightly coughing and sniffling in the office this afternoon to better lay the groundwork in using a sick day tomorrow. It's overkill, as no one would bat an eye if I simply called in tomorrow morning, but I'm pretty sure this makes me a honorary member of Dutch's gang.

Only if you eat corn beef hash butties in the staff kitchen and raid the bank on the way to work.

I'll have to settle for eating baked beans out of the can (cooked over an open flame) at home and picking up a nickel I saw on the street. Gradually embracing the inner outlaw. :woo

Reviews pretty much par for the course for these guys.

I think I'm gonna wait until they launch MP to buy this. More interested in playing with my friends than the campaign mode, truth be told.

For the first time in forever, they are doing a 9pm opening at our local Best Buy. So I will be able to play this tonight.

I've heard the game is shockingly unfun to play, and makes seemingly easy tasks like picking up objects and in game reading & shopping a chore. For those who have played, is this true?

Just purchased and will be playing later, but I think it comes down too how much 'authenticity' one wants with the 'inhabited world', i.e. it's a slower way of life being represented, so the tasks and built-in way of life is going to reflect that.

Chore? I haven't found it to be a chore. I don't understand the complaint on that. I'm really having fun with this game.

I've watched 1 roaming video and i stopped after like 5 minutes. I know this aint gta but riding only the horse (correct me if Im wrong), no radio and the western scenery don't really appeal to me. like i'll eventually buy the game but it can wait. And looks like i'd only really play it for story missions.

Why would you even start watching a video of a game about cowboys if you do not like "western scenery"

No, but I can (sort of) understand where those comments may come from, I'm not too far in, but it's already obvious that this is the most immersive game Rockstar has ever made, and being a Western the game is naturally slower paced than a GTA title would typically be. GTA is where I think the problem some gamers may be having is coming from, this game is not GTA set in the old west, not in tone, not in story, and not in mechanics, world design, music, or transportation, and if you want that from a game then this is not the game for you, this is a game that actively contrasts itself from the excess of convenience present in the direction they've taken GTA and especially GTA Online, and impatient gamers are going to have difficulty with the game's slower and more methodical pace and mechanics. If you get in a fight in the mud you'll have to clean the mud off your clothes in a river if you don't want to walk around covered in dirt crusted clothes, if you don't clean your weapons they'll slowly become less reliable, and if you don't take care of your horse it too will become less reliable, if you're in cold or hot weather you'll want to dress accordingly, etc. There are a boatload of mechanics built around immersing you into the game's world, but in my opinion none of them are taken so far as to not be fun, they're taken just far enough to make the world feel alive. Red Dead Redemption 2 is NOT GTA V, nor should it be, it is its own thing, and so far for me it's shaping up to be their best game since the previous Red Dead game.

This is something Jim Sterling talks about in his Jimpressions video and I have to agree. They've went for "authenticity" at the expense of fun and pacing and gameplay. To search a chest you have to walk to the front of a chest and hold down square for about 2 seconds then he'll casually open the chest. Then you have to hold down a button for a couple seconds and he'll pick up one item in the chest. If there is five items in the chest you have to do that five times. For one ****ing chest. And if it's a cabin with multiple cabinets and chests...well you can see where this is going. Early in the game you're attacked by about 20 guys. After you kill them you're told to search them and gather supplies. To do so you have to go up to a body and hold down the search button until the activation circle fills up and Arthur will bend down lift up the corpse go through its pockets and lay it back down...all in real motions and real time. Repeat 20 times.

Your character loses stamina and health depending on energy expended and exposure. Need to eat to reup that. So you've got to go into your satchel and select a food and he eats it. But since the game is stingy you've got to eat multiple cans of food or rice cakes (acted out in realistic motions) to replenish your stamina and energy. Right from the very start.

Oh and the game opens in a snowbound wintery hell and the characters and horses move through the snow realistically which makes movement slow and tedious. Not a great way to start the game.

I havent hunted yet but Sterling said you have to shoot the animals just right or you'll ruin the pelt which makes it worthless for crafting which is something you have to do in this game. Animals are supposedly overly skittish too.

This isnt a game. Its a cowboy simulator. As obsessed with realism and tedium as any of the other countless simulators on the market.

And this is the first video "game" to actually put me to sleep since Assassin's Creed 3. I was riding my horse down a mountain at the speed of snail after rescuing a character and I dozed off. We'll see if it happens again. I'm not giving up on this thing just yet. The story is supposedly fantastic and I want to experience the story in spite of the tedious gameplay. I just might have to up my caffeine intake prior to playing the game.

These complaints about pace & chores - first question, those people making these complaints, did you not play the first game ? second, it's 1899, it's not BTTF Part III and it's not GTA : Tarintino does Rockstar.

It's an immersive 'realistic' view of life in that period of history. You are going to have to work to stay alive, whether that be food finding, making a home for yourself, feeding loved ones or friends. That's how it was, there wasn't a B&Q down the road.

As far as the vista's go, they are beautiful and expansive, John Ford-era.
