Rockstar Red Dead Redemption

Well it is finally coming to a platform that is worthy of it. That's right I went there.

I'm taking a break, I'm sitting at 99.something% of completion. I just need the sharpshooter tier of challenges. Sharpshooter 8 is frustrating. Anyone have advice for it?

I am enjoying Online at the moment though. I picked trader for my role.

So I finally picked this up. I'm glad I waited for a price cut, it is less than $27 American dollars. And.... I didn't enjoy the first hour and I stopped after the wolves part in the snowy mountain. I hope majority of the game isn't like that because the start of the story was really slow!

The whole game is slow. The world will open up and you get to do what you want, but if you cant get used to the tempo then you’re probably not gonna enjoy it

Well I have nothing else to play right now, and I don't leave a main game story unfinished when it comes to ps4 games, so yeah I hope I get used to it after a week of playing. And I don't want to take a 2 to 3 weeks break like I did to the last game I've played and finished.

It's honestly one of the best games ever made, if you truly embrace the games temper. Don't rush through it. Take your time, live life as a cowboy, and enjoy.

I'm seeing a video of someone playing as a lion. Is that a pc mod or a new feature?

I've finished the prologue.... long review!
After playing for 3 weeks I'm now at 89.1%.

I'm gonna start with the things I like. The graphics are really great, especially the lighting. normally in open world games, when its nighttime, it doesn't look great because everything is so dark, but in this, like when you're in the swamps and the light source is the moon, its look great. I liked the look when its foggy. There are also rainbows and thunder strikes. The graphics of the mud look realistic. The playable character can actually grow his hair and beard through time which I thought was unique. The city of Saint Denis look amazing, and is my favorite location in the game. The attention to details is impeccable. I like the cosmetic customization for the clothes, weapons and the horse. I like that there's a barber shop and theater. There are so many choices for the foods. I like that you can feed your horse. Even though the game is long, the missions weren't really hard and they don't feel long after the first chapter. When I feel like I don't want to repeat another thing during a mission after failing trice, I just can skip to the next checkpoint which I did less than ten times in the game (I used the skip feature more in GTA V). GTA V had frustrating missions, this one didn't really have one.

Now to the negative things. I found the game extremely slow in the first two chapters. Even when I was not doing much, I found it a bit boring and tiresome. When I finished a simple and easy story mission or I've just played it in 1 hour, I turned off the game right after, because I felt bored and lazy doing another thing in the game. When Arthur and his pals set up their camp in the non snowy location, and when I finally started to free roam/explore, I was like, okay this is getting fun and exciting. But after I visited the places that I can free roam to (that I'm not "dead or alive"), it didn't feel fun anymore. Even though there are a lot of collectibles/animals to find/discover, I just wasn't motivated to find them all as I feel like I would just find it tiresome. A lot of the locations look great but I wasn't really engaged by the surroundings. Maybe they could have put the collectibles' location in the map to encourage me to find the collectibles one by one. As someone who didn't play the previous Red Dead game, the main story was not engaging at the start, like it took days for me to care and remember names. My experience playing Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, GTA V, Spider-Man 2018 and Horizon Zero Dawn were much better in the beginning as I was more engaged to do so much activities. In Red Dead Redemption 2, I was always cautious about my horse (well I wasted my money in the beginning just trying to revive my horse twice), my money, my inventory and I was really careful when I killed/robbed someone because paying for bounty really ate my budget in the game in the early stages. I can't kill or rob here just for fun because there's a consequence/payment if I do that. I also didn't have much money. A lot of the crafting items required animal parts that are not that easy to get and those animals parts have to be in good shape. Like does it matter, if the parts are in good shape, when I already killed the animal. I didn't like that so I didn't get the upgrades that required crafting materials from animals. You also have to clean your gun as if you have an unlimited amount of gun cleaner. I read online that Rockstar really wanted me to make this realistic as they can, and this game just reminded how I don't really want to live in a rural area and province, and that I prefer my open world games to be set in a city. Well this game had a city, with building and shops, but even there, I had to be careful riding my horse, because the policemen there are stricter. Like for example, I accidentally hit a dog and people in the street, and you can't easily get out of there without a bounty. Then the controls here are not the easiest. I feel like if you aren't paying attention enough, you won't easily remember/know how to see the things you've acquired. The controls here are quite odd. One time, right after I purchased a new gun, I accidentally shot the seller which of course instantly made me wanted and lots of people were shooting me in the area and I had to pay for it. So things like that made me anxious/careful when I'm playing. Then when I was at the point of enjoying the game during chapter 3 and 4, I instantly lost my horse because of some random gang ambush which I wasn't expecting. That was so annoying. After I was killed, the horse that I've been using for more than a week was just gone. Why do they do this? I know I could have just opened my last manual save to revive my horse but I was thinking of my unsaved progress. And later on, I regretted not opening my last manual save. Then buying a good horse is gonna take a thousand dollars which I didn't have when I lost my horse. It just sucked, all the progress I had with my horse which had good health/stamina level and had some customizations was just gone in an instant. It kinda threw me off because it was a really good horse, and at that point, I was having fun doing side stuff and I've just began collecting stuff one by one. But then suddenly, I had to settle with a horse with really low levels which might easily die in the road/mission/by accident and I felt riding in egg shells again, just like in the beginning of the game. It was not a good feeling. Also I didn't camp anymore right after I saw those Muffree brothers. Like earlier in the game, it was a concern to me that someone would attack me when I set up a camp. Several days, it happened, and I quickly killed them so I wouldn't see them again. I really avoid conflicts like that. Also some of the easter eggs/side stuff are creepy. Like there's a freaking ghost/ghost whispers/cult/wolf man in the game. So I really avoided roaming in the wilderness at night. I wish the female characters had more stuff to do in the main story, and I wish there were more prominent in the action like they could have been used more to assist Arthur. I also wish Rockstar would finally make a game with a female protagonist.

Having said those things, I actually ended loving the game. At first I didn't really care about the story and the characters, but as I progressed like halfway into the main story. It finally clicked on me. I liked for every chapter, there's a new hq. The early part of chapter five was very Uncharted-ish. Then when Arthur lost his pals one by one especially in the chapter 4 bank robbery, I actually felt bad for them despite them being notorious criminals which is weird. I used three horses for Arthur - the last one, even though it took time for me to adjust to it because I really liked my second horse, I ended staying with him. I was planning before to ditch him for someone else, either buy a new horse or get that zebra horse, that I used in one of the main missions. But once Arthur returned to America and I whistled and a note appeared stating my horse was gone, I was like, not again but thankfully my 3rd horse returned so since then I knew I wasn't gonna change a horse anymore. The characters that I liked here the most are Arthur and John. Arthur because I was controlling him. John intrigued me when I found out he was at the protagonist of the previous game, so I instantly was drawn into him. Its quite sad when Arthur was diagnosed with tuberculosis. When I was playing this, I was always thinking what if we are still in 1899 and how different the world is now compare to 1899. That scene of him in the clinic was just so sad, and Arthur's reaction about his condition, I had that feeling twice of being told that I have TB, so in a way I can relate. Even though its a videogame, it really makes me realize how deadly TB is, especially in the years when there was no cure yet. Like I feel lucky that in this day and age, there's already a treatment for it and, I didn't need to pay a single cent for the pills because of my country's health program. And treatment for TB is expensive so I feel extra lucky that I only had pay for x-ray results. Like if I was born in the late 1800s or the early 1900s and I caught it, I would have been dead and even passed the disease to someone else. Or I wouldn't get the medication for free. When he was diagnosed, at that point, the game kinda became a bit too real to me even if Arthur is just a fictional character. Like what is even the point of doing so much stuff with Arthur, if he was gonna die and he did. I thought after the main story, I would be able to use him along with John, but nope. The story was kinda depressing.

Then the saddest thing about the game is... we I knew Arthur was gonna die because I watched his final scene online but the last mission with Arthur was quite sad because I also lost the horse. I felt like I've also invested so much time with my third horse and I didn't realize that I was gonna lose him too as well. I didn't think he was gonna be shot. When Arthur said thank you to the horse, I teared up. When the prologue started playing, I saved the prologue to another slot so I could go back to Arthur and his horse. I got the "good" ending, by the way. But the game didn't feel the same anymore to me after finishing the main game. Even though I was excited to see the new areas and get to play John, I miss Arthur and his horse. The prologue just felt different. I didn't play RDR1 before, so seeing Blackwater and New Austin was nice but in my head, I wish I was still controlling Arthur and his horse and exploring those areas and finishing the remaining side stuffs. John's prologue wasn't as sad, but it is sad that knowing that him and Uncle would eventually get shot and die. While John's son, looked pretty young in Rdr1's ending, so I'm guessing Abigail died young and not as an old lady. I also feel a bit sad that their gang really separated ways even if the two girls/the cook seemed to find a new hope in life. And I wish Sadie/Charles didn't leave and that they would be in town.

My favorite missions here in the game are the ones that involve shooting the enemies, and I liked that Arthur wasn't really alone in those many shootouts. Now to the side quests. I felt like some of the strangers had more personality and were more engaging than some of the characters that were heavily featured in the main story. Those strangers missions really added more variety to this game and I always tried to do them as soon as I can. A lot of them didn't really feel the same. Then the collectibles/compendium were just too many. Profiling 188 animals is just too many. I only profiled 120 animals which is already a passing number for the 100% requirements, but I wonder which animals I missed. There's also plants, horses, fishes, equipments and weapons that I've missed. Though aside from weapons, I've crossed them all out for the 100% completion requirement. I also didn't bother to finish off 2 gang hideouts as no one would help me there. The ones that I totally skipped/didnt prioritize are the challenges, finding the exotics and hunting requests. Its just too much work and effort for a 100%. I also skipped the legendary animals and fishes as I felt like I wouldn't enjoy hunting those. I tried to catch a legendary fish once, and my hand got so numb trying to catch it, it took like 10 minutes and when I got the big fish, it wasn't even a legendary fish even though the map said, there's a legendary fish out there and I also used the special bait stuff. Even though it sounds like I've missed many side stuff, I found all dinosaur bones, dreamcatchers and rock carvings - all of them were quite time consuming. I completed the required number for bounties, stranger missions, chance encounters, shacks, board games, ranters and recipes. I still haven't completed a cigarette set, visited all the graves and I still have 2 robberies that need to be done but I might go check them out later. The two robberies, I saved it after the prologue, I'm going to do those next.

Now to the comparisons to other big open world videogames. I know this game is way different but I can't help but to compare. Comparing to Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the main story was much longer especially with the epilogue and that there are much more collectibles here, but ACO had a bigger map and that game had so much location objectives and more time consuming side story missions than RDR2. AC Odyssey is still the longest videogame I have played and the most time consuming. Red Dead Redemption 2 is 2nd but not close, maybe if I hunt the legendary animals, it would be but who knows.

Then comparing it to GTA 5, Rockstar said that RDR2 has the biggest map out of their games, but to me, I can go from the left side of the map to the far side of the map in like ten minutes. Maybe 20 minutes, from the snowy mountains to Saint Denis. Unlike in GTA V, I feel like even with the faster car (my horse in Rdr2 wasn't even fast), it feels longer to do that. I guess since most of the map are wide farming spaces/trees/mother nature/untouched land, there's really no road traffic aside from the city and 1/4 of the map isn't really accessible until you beat the main game. The map doesn't feel that huge to me and to be honest, I expected a bigger map. GTA V also had so many underwater areas, underground areas, indoor areas and a lot of those areas I only saw online, and there's the aerial space as well. RDR2's indoor areas aren't really big. Well I didn't step inside to every house/place in Rdr2 that can be robbed/searched but you can easily see there are only a handful of those places with so many rooms. Then including New Austin/Blackwater to the map of the entire game. Okay maybe its bigger than GTA V but there wasn't really anything to do with New Austin other than I guess clear the fog in the map, discover some animals/plants/bones/gangs and meet that 1 stranger. I wish the game really used New Austin in the main game/prologue.

Over all, this game is pretty good. I was bored at first but then the characters grew on me and now I like it. I also really like the effort put into this, especially visually and all the easter eggs/side stuffs. Do I want a Red Dead Redemption 3, well I want GTA Six first and maybe another open world game from Rockstar (that is set in a futuristic place to differentiate it from GTA/RDR). But if they make a Red Dead Redemption 3, I'd like to see Sadie, Charles and Jack as playables, all three of them. And hopefully, there would be more cities and fewer untouched lands.

Nobody told you to read my review. Yeah it is long, thats why I put it in a spoiler tag, so no one would say and complain, its too long, but i also only posted mostly it for self reference, as I might want to read what I thought about the game years later (similar to my other game reviews). Do you want me to post that snarky pic, in your movie review thread, that no one really reads and just be plain disrespectful?

I wonder if Mexico will finally get unlocked sometime. I miss that part of the map and want my online character to have a camp there

I'm not gonna resort to your level.
I wonder if Mexico will finally get unlocked sometime. I miss that part of the map and want my online character to have a camp there
I saw a clip from YouTube that you can access it in rdr2.

I still haven't gotten out of Saint Denis. I can't get passed how bad the actual "game" part of this game is. Before you spend millions of dollars and man hours animating horse testicles, you should probably figure out how to make a competent shooter first. Since this thing is on PC now, hopefully the ****ing modding community will fix it. I don't think I've ever been more frustrated with a game that I honestly want to love because the quieter moments and the world are really cool.

I abandoned the story mode after the first couple of days and have basically done nothing but online free roam ever since. It's fun enough if you're just trying to relax and kill some time. But I'll tell you what, if you run into other players that want to wreck your business, you might as well turn the game off and log back in.

I love the story. Got invested into the characters and world! I've got no issues with the gameplay either

Michah Bell killed the story for me and it honestly just got worse from there. The moving base mechanic a is neat idea, but the narrative suffers from the continuous need to justify it within the story. Combine that with crappier shooting mechanics than it's predecessor and you have a game that becomes a chore, but due to my love for Westerns and the lack of Westerns in the gaming space, I'll still likely finish it one of these days.

Well I disagree with everything you say, but that's fair enough.

Michah is the worst. No doubt about that. Thankfully that *****e rocket gets ventilated.

Dutch is the second worst and an embarrassingly incompetent gang leader.

But Arthur, John, and Sadie kept me invested in the game.
