RoboCop Reboot - Part 7

I rented the movie, and I thought it wasn't anything special. IMO, I truly think that this remake is a tame version of what people think Robocop 1987 to be, versus how much more that version actually is. Not only that, they try setting up a good theme of humans vs machines being used from war to police, but by the second half, it doesn't go anywhere and becomes a generic action movie instead. If I were to pick the original or the remake, its the original to the point where it is the ONLY Robocop movie that exists in my head. In terms of what I would want from a Robocop remake; anything else than the 2014 one.

^Disappointing that its only in 2nd place, was thinking it would in 1st place easily. My hopes for a sequel are dwindling.

Finally saw this yesterday on blu-ray. I really enjoyed this movie...for the most part. The pacing of the movie was almost perfect until the end where it felt like everything got really rushed and when the credits came up I was like "Really? That's it? That's how they end it?"

I really liked the themes of the film though, the commentary on technology, man vs machine, Murphy fighting to get his humanity back. The action was really good and they didn't waste any time getting right into the meat of the story. But, again, the 3rd act felt really, really rushed and unsatisfying. As entertaining as Sam Jackson was they should not have ended the film with him, the last shot should have been Robocop doing Robocop things and with the original score playing in the background. That would have been great.

It left me wanting more which is a good thing, so I hope there's a sequel.

I watched this a couple times on bluray and have to admit I like this film. The original is a classic to me and a top 3 film for me. This doesn't come close to it but I think it is done well. ROBOCOP's black look has grown on me I have to admit. Really hoping for a sequel now.

This was a fantastic movie. Better than the original in different ways, because it was an entirely different approach, never dwelling on exactly what made the original work, but nodding at it and moving in a different direction. Smart move and it worked well, for the most part. The character work and exploration of core concepts in this was really just well beyond the original, and the action was great, too in a more modern context. A really solidly written, entertaining, well executed and often thought-provoking film that honors the RoboCop legacy. I loved hearing the main theme.

Bring on a flying Robocop or maybe Robocop can chase after bad guys in the water with scuba or underwater mode if there is a sequel.

^With Robo-Shark repellent!

Seriously though its discouraging we are getting no news on a sequel. I thought BD/DVD sales would push Sony to announce something.

Maybe they're focusing their limited funds on Amazing Spider Man 3?

^Possibly, at this point though I would prefer a Robocop 2. TASM3 needs some serious work on it. So I hope the rumours of it being pushed back are true.

It was....okay.

So much wasted potential though. A modern, post-Iron Man, post-Matrix, post-911 RoboCop? Wow. And this is what they come up with?

On a superficial note, RoboCop was wisely made to be more agile this time, but where were the scenes of him running faster than human speed? Or doing incredible things? All he did was shoot guns in this movie, which any cop can do.

Ill be fair and wont be comparing it to the original, but even if I didnt know the original and it didnt exist, this version is just such an average, part of a mass, uninspired story. I didnt like the designs, the music, the casting, and overall it was a very average, dime a dozen scifi of the 2010s. For some time I was actually trying to force myself to like it because I thought maybe I dont like it because I have the original in mind. I realized thats not the case

What the hell are you talking about?

This is sarcasm, right? Has to be sarcasm.

My complaint is that interesting ideas get floated, but there are never any consequences. They rig Murphy up so that the computer makes combat decisions--which is a a great opportunity to explore a real world issue--but then they never really address it again. Later, they tamper with his emotional capacity and he shrugs it off. Finally, when he faces Sellars, his programming prevents him from firing--so he just tries harder.

In the original film, Robocop didn't just try really hard to shoot Dick Jones. He walked in with a plan because he understood he had limitations and had to work around them. That is, to me, more compelling writing than "He beats the machine because he really wants to."

Now, I'm not saying the film should have followed the plot of the original (why bother making it, if that were the case), but if your going to make a Robocop movie, I think you should acknowledge that the core of it is about a person who undergoes a transformative experience and will never be the same because of it. In this film, he went through that life changing ordeal, except in the end he hadn't changed--except in that he had a rad robot body. He was still emotionally complete, still had a family to ride into the sunset with, was still making his own choices. Enduring hardship and remaining himself makes for a decent hero's tale, sure, but for me it doesn't ring true in a Robocop movie.

I wonder if this was hard R and gory like the original was, might have it done better?

In regards to the rating, I don't need fifty thousand blood squibs squirting across the screen, but I did find it disappointing how one of the key sequences was almost entirely hidden behind dark lighting and thermal vision. It was rather conspicuous, and made the action flat, lacking punch. Not gonna lie; a little bit of that updated classic theme would've helped too, haha.

Maybe I'll feel differently on my second viewing. I haven't watched it since it came out in theatres.

It was a decent remake but nothing special or anything screaming sequel needed. It had promise but the pg-13 rating, bland acting, vanilla action and dull ending left me just feeling meh. If I had to describe this movie it would be the safe version for children 12 and up to watch while the original is porn for adults. I just wish they would have had more interesting ideas and try to take it in a different direction or even take a few chances. If I was a hollywood producer and this script came to me I would have thrown it back and demanded a diffrent approach.

I watched it again on DvD, it's still an OK movie but the replay value is low.

This was a good movie ruined by geek naysayers.

Definitely.

It was such a great reboot, but of course people had to cry about irrelevant things like the pg-13 rating.

The story would have gained nothing if it was r-rated.

But what does "people crying about irrelevant things" have to do with the quality of the film? How did the "naysayers" ruin the movie?
