Eternals Rotten Tomatoes watch thread

There are many more movies that were praised that I think are terrible, than ones which were bashed that I think are good. Just my $02, but, in general, I think critics are far too kind to movies these days. The Tomato Meter has totally watered down the relevance or importance of film criticism.
Yeah, Indiana Jones And The Crystal Skull has a 78% RT score and that still mystifies me to this day.

Aren't the Star Wars prequels also fresh? Cause those are trash too.

The extremely boring Superman Returns is also fresh with a 75% RT score, lol.

Superman Returns has a 72 on metacritic, which is higher than some films like......

X-Men First Class
X-Men 2
The Avengers
Avengers Infinity War
Captain America The Winter Soldier

Gah, I really dislike Superman Returns. Critics were way too kind on it when it came out. Not even getting into it's other issues, it completely bungles Superman as a character.

I am probably in the minority, but I thought "Arrival" was a terrible movie, yet the critics heaped praise all over that thing. Pure ham & hokum. And I love Amy Adams.

I guess Marvel can never win. You are blaming them for not helping her enough and I'm already seeing some people blaming the reception of the movie on them for probably interfering too much. Everyone is already blaming Marvel for everything. Just maybe, Zhao is not yet ready for superhero blockbusters.
The bold can go both ways really. She was definitely not ready for this genre shift, but you can also put it on Marvel for not seeing how her filmography is gonna translate into what they wanted Eternals to be. Sure she's an award winning director, but you also gotta look at the skillset, and nothing in her filmography indicates that she's ready for this type of film.
Meanwhile, Ant-Man and The Wasp has 87 % and I really was diappointed with this one. I just hope Marvel will have enough balls to continue some elements of LGTB, diverse cast and disability.
To be fair, I don't think those elements were the problem with this film (though some usual suspect YT channels might disagree :funny:)

I'm not blaming Marvel for everything, I'm just genuinely surprised that given the enormity of the company and the many stakeholders at Marvel and Disney, that it wasn't caught earlier. I mean, before Ant-Man, Peyton Reed had done a handful of rom-coms and TV comedy, yet he was still able to pull off a fun action flick.

So it just surprises me that a movie of this scope with an award winning director at the helm couldn't stick the landing, given all the assumed support and safety nets of the Marvel/Disney machine.
I'd imagine going from fun rom-com to fun action seems like an easier transition from Nomadland to Eternals. As someone said before, the ambition of Ant-Man isn't really as high as something like Eternals, so it won't be judged on the same curve.

Take it this will be rotten more than likely by the time all reviews are counted?

Ant-Man & the Wasp has a higher RT score than Infinity War.
I mean, by two points, but yeah, that one is baffling. To me, anyway.
But when looking at the actual average rating, the former has 7.0/10 and the latter has 7.6/10. This is why I hate RT... It hides the more important value.

Two critics (in a batch of 100) enjoyed AM&TW more than IW... Big ****ing whoop.

Skimming some of the reviews, at least it seems the negative ones aren't *that* negative. It sounds kind of like a movie that is overly ambitious and clunky, with stuff that didn't quite work, rather than a complete dumpster fire. Which is disappointing, but possibly still watchable if you go in with reserved expectations.

So it has now reached 100 reviews, still 63%. Four points away from a rotten rating.

No it doesn't. ROTS might be best of the 3, but it still sucks.

Here is some talk about the marvel formula.

Marvel’s Eternals Hits Lowest Critic Rating Of Any MCU Movie

62% is not a bad score. It's just one of the lowest of the postive scores and it's not rotten.
Out of 5 stars 62% would be 3 stars out of 5 stars.
That is still good(not great or very good but still good).
65% to 74% would be really good( very good but not great).
That would be 3 and half stars out of five stars.
It could go lower and become rotten and stay rotten or not or go higher again etc...

Let's keep in mind most dceu films have below 70% rt scores.
All DCEU Movies Ranked: DC Movies By Tomatometer << Rotten Tomatoes – Movie and TV News

For example i don't think man of steel should be in the 50's.
It should have been higher and most of the audience agree looking at the RT score but audience score is lower then 75%
I don't think man of steel was better then superman 1 and 2 by the way but i enjoy man of steel more and there are varied reasons for that i could list here but maybe some other time.
By the way there are folks that find superman 1 boring and believe or not there are folks who believe man of steel is boring with alot more action then superman 1/the movie.
The same for batman v superman.
So while man of steel is rotten, most critics still like it because it's still over 50% and it's rt score is 56%. That's 3 stars out of 5 and if you look at it's other score.
6.20 out of 10 average rating
That is still 3 stars.

But Ant-Man was not nearly as ambitious. Seemingly. I haven't seen the movie, but many reviews say it aims high and doesn't reach those heights it strives for. The thing about aiming high is that it is easier to fail or alienate people. So here, I see no way Feige didn't know Eternals was riskier than Ant-Man or something, and given comments Feige made about the movie in past interviews, it seems like he loved what he saw. That just isn't translating into universal acclaim from critics.

Oh, no question about that. My main point is, I don't think it's fair to solely lay the blame on Chloe Zhao's experience with the genre. These films are largely collaborative, and there'd be plenty of experts on hand to help with stuff like fight choreography, VFX all that stuff. I'd say it's maybe less about her familiarity with the genre and more just the overall scope and size of the movie. As I said in a previous post, once your movie is upwards of 2 1/2 hours, it becomes very, very difficult to maintain the pace. Most reviews seem to indicate the film falls away in the 3rd act so I'd say it's more of a scope/pacing issue.

I'd be willing to bet they knew it was too long but due to the complex/ambitious nature of the plot, they found they couldn't lose as much in the edit as they would've wanted without causing problems.
