Eternals Rotten Tomatoes watch thread

But when looking at the actual average rating, the former has 7.0/10 and the latter has 7.6/10. This is why I hate RT... It hides the more important value.

Two critics (in a batch of 100) enjoyed AM&TW more than IW... Big ****ing whoop.

The problem is that the average rating is a super flawed metric because a good chunk of reviews on RT don't have scores, just a fresh/rotten.

User scores and box office are going to matter most to them to judge if people would be eager to visit this again.

It will be interesting to see the audience score on RT. Box office, of course, matters the most in the end.

Well, box office can be spectacular but it doesn't mean people liked a movie because of it, as you never know whether you're going to enjoy something before you see it. It's equally important to be aware of audience's reaction to something to realise if there are sequel prospects. Suicide Squad did incredibly well when it was released and people hated it enough to not want to visit Birds of Prey or the sequel, even though they were both significantly better and from different filmmakers.

It's not really shocking. By process of elimination, it was bound to happen at some point.

It's not end of the world. You can't hit a home run every time you are at bat. When a franchise runs this long and has this many movies there are bound to be films that don't work or aren't as beloved as others.
Yes, it was bound to happen.

I'm just thinking at least it didn't happen first with MCU's F4 and X-Men, or else the internet would implode.

Its interesting how there's so much discussion about its Rt rating. Rt rating wasn't such a heated discussion to Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Yeah I knew it would be a big deal once a MCU film gets a rotten rating. Hopefully MCU could repeat its 25 movie streak after this one.

From my experience, it's always a heated discussion.

The critics views really go from one end to the other with this. The Nerdist review gave this 4.5/5 while some are 1/4 or 2/5.

And yet, I am still pumped for this movie! Even if it has same score as Venom 2 :o

Back down to 60% with 115 reviews.

To be fair, more reviews are coming in so it may be fresh again. But yeah, not trending in that direction

Certainly feels like the floodgates have finally opened for this one.
A big reason is probably that it had too many characters to introduce, and it also aimed very very high in terms of its ambitions as far as being "cinema", as long as their next movies don't have those same problems (which none seem like they'll have it, even NWH will have a very very easy time swaying everyone) the MCU will continue their streak.

The rest of the MCU films have succeeded with critics because they're films that are hyper-aware of what they are, this one isn't, this one swung for the fences, and it missed.

I am also wondering if maybe this one might be a bit too comic book for critics and maybe audiences. The MCU has done a great job of making these palatable for audiences, but maybe the giant space gods creating the universe and such is too silly for many people and it is just too niche?

Listen, I fully expect the next 30-40 mcu projects to get the same praise as everything else that’s come before them. Like I couldn’t be more excited for NWH if I tried. But when you’re on top, all it takes is one slip-up for people to pile on.

everyone loves to watch the Yankees lose once in a while.

I think the MCU is a very very different beast though. Yeah, it takes one slip-up for people to pile on, but at the same time, these are new characters that Marvel was introducing, while with the other ones they have an extremely set foundation for them. You've got Spidey, you've got Thor, Dr. Strange, etc.
The MCU is a franchise that's essentially a collection of several franchises.
If they slipped up in one of their big crossover movies or with one of their already set up characters, but with these ones I think it's permissible, since they can just forget and move on to the next one.The fact that it seems tonally it was very different from standard MCU also helps. "Failed experiment", we move on; that is, indeed, if the movie is a flop commercially.
