Star Trek Beyond - Part 1

I sometimes think Star Trek fans are the dumbest in all of fandom. They complain about too much action when one of the most beloved episodes in the show was Kirk fist-fighting a giant lizard man.

First Contact is the one I really like for the NG crew. For the original cast Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered Country and Voyage Home in particular. I do enjoy Search for Spock. Motion Picture and Final Frontier I don't like as much.

I like the Motion Picture just for the character moments. Voyage Home is a good film there are aspects of it I don't like. The less said about Final Frontier the better. I remember skipping school to go see it and feeling like school was the better decision.

The problem stems from the change in concept from Star Trek to The Next Generation. Here's a test of how important the action was in Star Trek.....hum the exploration music from Star Trek....hum the moral dilemma music...probably can't right? Hum the fight music.

I think Star Wars fandom is worse.

DC 'every so called flaw in our precious material is a conspiracy' fans are up there.

Anybody wanna bring up Marvel fans while we're at it?

Look, all fandoms have their bad apples and annoying tendencies and pointless things they obsess over or are insecure about. It's the nature of fanaticism.

Yep. So hopefully we all leave it at that and just keep the discussion here to Trek.

Fanboys in general can be pretty bad. Given all the moaning about all of these projects its safe to say its fanboys jobs to complain about something they haven't seen, then worship it when it delivers.

I am a Star Wwars fan and a Star Trek fan. I saw Star Wars back in '77. I enjoyed the prequels and didn't hate Jar Jar as much as everyone else did. Seeing Yoda saber fight is still a highlight in my eyes.
I am a TOS fan and it took me a while to warm up to TNG...but I did like DS9 and Enterprise...I saw Battlestar Galactica reboot before watching Voyager and it's ruined for me.
I know a lot of Trek fans don't like the reboot movies but I look at them as happening in another universe that the original series. It should be its own thing just like a movie series. Asked on the Mirror universe would be.

So pretty much everyone who posts here

Actually Roddenberry hated Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country....the two best movies in the series.

Wrath of Khan is a bad film IMO. I don't get why so many people like it. It's has no depth ST should have.

I still think the first ST movie is by far the best and one of the best sci-fi films ever, maybe the best one. It's a complex work of art with great visuals and music and more importantly it's really intellectual and it even goes behind the lines of mysticism, it has great pure sci-fi plot i.e. encounter with unknown extraterrestrial intelligence, great dialogues and characters, nobody has to run somewhere or shoot somebody to make it more interesting! In a fact there's no need for any action or jokes or explicit love story or similar things that has to be in every big budget film :whatever: ... It's pure intellectual movie and I love that.

Wrath of Khan is kind of joke in comparison to 1979 ST, yet people love it much more...

I overall like the Abramsverse by the way, I love Star Trek 09 and even like Into Darkness. I just don't think that every film in the Abramsverse should be all about jokes, a super duper fast pace and endless explosions. That's all. I'm not saying Beyond looks bad, I'm not a ******** Trekker and I don't want an uber dark Star Trek.

Because at that time...running, shooting, action, jokes and a love story (there was a love arc between Riker and Troi...I mean Dekker and Ilia....were part of Star Trek.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is dull as dishwater. The music and visual effects are on point though.

Ehhhhhhhh. I'm 50/50 on the trailer. The new costumes look great and the aliens look cool but some of the action looks a little Fast & Furious-y. Particularly the shot of Pegg jumping out of a falling pod and hanging on by the edge of the cliff and the last shot of Kirk and Sofia Boutella jumping, spinning in a circle, grabbing each other mid-air and beaming on the ship. Also, did the Enterprise really needed to be destroyed once again? But the teaser was just a minute and a half long, and most of the stuff looks cool so I guess we'll have to wait for more footage.

Also, was that one alien guy Idris Elba? The way the trailer was edited it kinda makes it seem so. If so, he looked cool.

Well, that...exists. I don't think it's bad, I don't think it looks very good, it exists.

I swear I have seen that movie 3 times and still could not recount the plot to you. It just does not hold my attention at all. And I'm a Terrence Malick fan, lol.

When I need to go to sleep I put this movie on....I usually conk out around the 15 minute lazy inspection of the ship

Are you kidding guys? 1979 ST is the best. It's like a better and sci-fi version of Plato's dialogues. :woot:

I've said running, shooting, action, jokes and a love story are not part of that film and your reaction is Because at that time [those thing] were part of Star Trek. I don't understand that...

:funny:

It doesn't hold most people's attention because it's so obnoxiously reverential and has virtually none of what people dug about the original series. Abramsverse tone is much closer to the original series than that ponderous bore of a film.

If I wanted to get into Star Trek other than the new movies, where should I start?

That's because 'plot' holds no meaning in a Malick film. it's all about tone and emotion. Malick's films are more akin to music than they are to a novel.
