Everybody was so opposed to the idea of Nolan doing a ST film but noone gave me any argument why it would not be a good fit...

because ST movies usually are enjoyable and sometimes more clever than people give them credit for. so, the complete opposite of Nolan's work

I didn't like the trailer either, they're trying to make it more commercial and "fun" to see if they can make more money, but Star Trek is much more than that, a real shame.

[Sarcasm] Are you sure? [Sarcasm]

I'd rather they bring in Nurse Chapel or Yeoman Rand
IMO, these are the kind of characters missing from the rebooted ST.

I confessed as any red-blooded male that I was smitten by the original Nyota Uhura and Yeoman Rand.

Uhura sings a song about Mr. Spock:

Yeoman Rand:

So, it looks like the enterprise may bite the dust yet again. Thats what, 3 times now on the big screen?

3 times in 13 movies

Massive oversimplification and poor logic. Same issue as with the death of Spock in TWoK vs STID. The Enterprise was destroyed in STIII after a decades-long career in universe and 3 seasons and 3 movies in real life. It had weight and impact as a result. It was also a badass move on the part of Kirk to save his friends. It was a fitting end for the old ship. Once again, the loss of the Enterprise-D in Generations came after 7 seasons and a movie. It made some sense as a result. They wanted a new ship for the TNG movie series. There were still several issues with its destruction. It was rather anticlimactic given that it was lost in a battle with an old Bird of Prey in a movie with pretty low stakes.

In the new series, the first movie was an origin story involving the ship's maiden voyage. The second movie kept harping on the theme that Kirk was not quite ready and, therefore, wasn't given a 5 year mission. He, his crew, and the Enterprise finally "earn" that at the end of STID, with the promise that the next film would be about them finally being on their 5-year mission and be about exploration. From the trailer for this film, it seems the Enterprise is lost at the start of the film, stranding the crew. It is the same problem that both Skyfall and TDKR had in terms of jumping to the end after the previous two movies only seemingly being origin/setup stories. This narrative choice seems extremely rushed.

Hard to tell if it's rushed just by a trailer. We don't truly know where the ship is destroyed in the film. If they have a story to tell were the ship gets destroyed do they tell it or do they have to wait until everyone gets used to the ship so it will have an emotional resonance? How many movies should they wait? Five? Six? Ten?

I don't know, I don't think Beastie Boys works that well with Star Trek.

Isn't that whole thing a call back to the first movie?

and wasn't its use in the first movie a reference to Shatner and his ability or inability to pronounce that word?

It appears a lot of people appear to have missed on these connections.

That was a funny video. I'm definitely not someone who's likely to make Star Trek connections.

But seeing Spock jump around while Beastie Boys play didn't produce the best effect.

Jesus Christ. Finally got around to seeing the trailer and it was just terrible. I liked the first two films but man, that trailer was bad.

Well Lin said the song is in the movie for a reason I believe. Even though I dug the teaser, I did hate that "Spock reacts to Sabotage" shot. So cheesy :hehe:

Eh, I don't think it looks awful and after reading Lin's comments I'm a bit more hopeful than after my first viewing of it. Though that cinematography looks very generic.

Where's Carol?

What about Carol Marcus? Will she be part of Star Trek Beyond? “We pick the crew up about two and a half years after Into Darkness,” explained Lin. “There were many iterations where we did go and explore [Carol Marcus], but we figured it was two and a half years…It was something we talked about and worked on, but in the presentation of this film it didn’t quite fit in. It’s there with the transporter and everything.”

Blame marketing and not Lin regarding how the trailer was cut

"When I saw the teaser, I’m like, aw ****. You really have to put the motorcycle in there? So [for 'Fast and Furious' comments], I get it, I get it, I get it."

Was hoping we would see Carol Marcus again, shame she has just been left out.
