jim! you just sat down a man with no cards at a high stake poker game and told him to bluff!

It wasn't just that they did Kahn, its that they did Kahn poorly. They were so dependent upon the holdover legacy of the older story that they literally had Spock Prime show up to deliver exposition of why anyone should even care about the character at all and then also explain how they beat him in Wrath of Kahn.

Much of the rest of the film is also dependent upon playing off of borrowed nostalgia or inverting classic scenes in ridiculous ways.

Spock yelling Kahn elicited outright laughter and then very quickly sadness at how bad it was.

These movies are bad fanfic and the franchise needs to move on.

While I agree with everything in this post, why do so many people in this thread misspell Khan as Kahn? Is it on purpose because of how little Cumberbatch's Khan resembled the real Khan?

That s*** has driven me crazy for years on these forums but I just didn't want to be a grammar nazi. His name is KHAN.

It's like when people spell Malcolm as Malcom. It's Dr. Ian MALCOLM. It's MALCOLM X.

I prefer to spell it as Cahn, because it is much easier to buy Cumberbatch as Jewish than Indian. :o

I loved it when Family Guy did that Khan spoof, same episode featuring Louis Griffin. :o

"Kahhhhhnnnnn!!!"

Anyone else besides me actually love ST09 and SITD?

I looooove the first one. STID is enjoyable enough when watching it thanks to JJ and the cast, but it just doesn't hold up. The second half repeats stuff from WoK... but what I find weirder is how the first half repeats stuff from ST'09! Very strange.

As someone who never really got into Star Trek, never saw the movies, and has only seen the original series and next generation (Picard is awesome)....I really loved both JJ movies. They hold a really nice place for me in the modern blockbuster landscape. I actually just finished STID and I enjoyed I about as much as I did when it came out.

I understand why fans don't really like it though lol

I hope Spock gets to be a bit more Spock-like in this new movie. His characterization has been quite off the last two movies. Spock getting angry or sentimental (or you know going into Pon Farr) only held weight in the original series because of how collected he was most of the time. Its one of his defining characteristics. This new Spock just seems kind of seething at all times.

I think it's fine in the first movie because of what he was going through and it's a new revisionist version of Spock; but yeah I think he needs to grow from 'Into Darkness'.

He's still young and half human so its ok for him to be less refined. Plus this Spock isnt going to have the same personality as Spock Prime. Spock Prime didnt have his planet destroyed, his mother killed in front of his eyes, and his species brought to the brink of extinction. That sort of **** tends to effect a person in significant ways. So Spock Prime and Spock Secunde should be different, because they are different people with very different lives and experiences.

The reason why I don't particular care for Star Trek Into Darkness is because it's a bad retread of Wrath of Khan, which isn't just uninspired but lazy. I was so disappointed that Abrams would have allowed something like that to happen after making Star Trek (2009) a sequel/prequel instead of a full on reboot. With that said, it's an enjoyable film with great action and absolutely beautiful cinematography. I even forgive them whitewashing Khan since Cumberbatch as Khan wasn't the problem. The Kirk death scene and the magic Khan blood definitely was contrived as hell, though.

And this is coming from someone who would consider himself a fan of the TOS films and 90s Trek who loves Star Trek (2009).

I don't demand that they be the same but this Spock is just really unengaging personally. They've foregrounded Spock's personal struggle with his heritage and emotions and that can make for a fine story bit in continuing to play that up they neglect much of the function of the character. Also can we just be done with origin story excuses past the origin story? "This Spock can't be Spock he's young Spock." "It's Superman's first day on the job" At a certain point these takes on the characters and the performers choices just continue to miss much of the appeal of the characters and fail to replace them with much worthwhile. Along with endless glowering, this take on Spock just lacks witt and charisma.

Not deliberate just apparently a common mistake to make. I guess it's just because phonetically Khan has "ah" sound in the middle.

Now if I was going to do a play on the spelling it would be the Wrath of John or Jhan.

Definitely doing a re-warth of the first 2 movies before beyond hits.

Anybody know if there's something special planned for the anniversary, other than the movie? A TV special, a book or anything?

There's always Vic Mignogna's fan films, Star Trek Continues. I love those!
