Star Trek Beyond - Part 3

I'm seeing rumors on twitter that the Bluray will have different color timing than the theatrical release. Lin wasn't done with the film when they had to release it.

Interesting if true.

Source: Simon Pegg on the official Star Trek Podcast.

Interesting. I really liked the colours, even if they weren't quite as poppy as the previous two.

I thought the look of theovie fit the tone. I ll be interested to see what changes.

So the official star trek Podcast "Engage." Has separate interviews with both Doug Jung and Simon Pegg. I've only listened to the Jung interview so far. Really great insights into the process of making the film. Everything Orci related was completely completely scrapped. Pegg and Jung weren't even allowed to look at the work that had already been done. They were given a completely blank canvas six months that before production. That's fast as it is but mean while they had to get ideas in place so that set designs could start being g built. Madness. I think the film still came out really well. Even with another pass on the script they very wellay have made the same decision s as to how to solve out information.

Instead of changing the colors, I'd like less shaky cam editing on the Blu-ray.

*watches the scene of Spock looking at the picture of the Prime Universe crew*

*absorbs the moment for a bit, before...*

"I wonder if he's thinking to himself, 'Who the f*** is that guy with the mustache?'"

:o

Or Spock is thinking "Mr. Scott would look more pleasing with a mustache.".

:)

I think I'm sticking with mine just due to the fact that Doohan and Simon Pegg don't look a damn thing alike, with mustache or without.

Went to see this with my wife, who's a huge Trek fan.

Me, I'm a moderate Trek fan - remember watching TOS as a little kid and I enjoyed TNG and DS9. Still, you ain't gonna see me wearing Spock ears or dressing up as a tribble.

Anyway, while I don't think it was as strong as Into Darkness ( come on, Elba wasn't as good a villain as Cumberbatch - whitewashing aside) I found it a very enjoyable film - which is a hell of a lot more than I could say for a lot of the TNG garbage films ( Insurrection, Nemesis, yup I'm talkin' bout you !).

Nice that Pegg gave himself more to do - and that the McCoy/Spock relationship got a bit of service. I don't really feel like Zoe Saldana was in much of this movie (must have been busy on GOTG 2).

Sad that it was Yelchin's last performance, he too gets very little screentime, as did Cho (although he did a lot with a little), as for the "Sulu's gay" thing, get over it people, it's the freakin 23rd century for crying out loud.

I could certainly feel Justin Lin's influence in the action sequences, it had a real Fast and Furious vibe to it. I don't know what shall we call it "Fast Trek" ?

Absolutely loved the moment where Spock looks at the photo of the original cast - I mean that's real fan service there ! Definitely a must see for Trek fans, and with enough appeal to entertain the GA.

cheers.

Watched it last night. I liked it well enough. I know some people have issue with the way its moved away from the original series, but I disagree. The spirit is still there. Kirk and Krall's dialogue screamed of one of Bill Shatner's speeches from the original. Yes, its been modernized. Get over it Trekkies. The spirit remains (and that is a helluva lot more than some fandoms can say, i.e. Superman/DC comics fans).

As for the gay Sulu thing...I dunno, I agree with George Takei in the sense that it was a "whisper." You blink, you miss it. There was no reason to do it, but conversely, there was no reason not to do it. In a way, it felt patronizing, sort of like screaming "HEY EVERYONE! LOOK HOW PROGRESSIVE WE'RE BEING!" We didn't see Chekov's family or Uhura's or Scotty or Bones. So why even show Sulu's? They literally turned Sulu gay simply for the sake of turning Sulu gay. I can see why Takei would take issue with that, especially if he knows it contradicts with his friend Roddenberry's vision of the character. And he is quite right that the issue of LGBT characters in film has been handled much more "profoundly" by others. But, as I said, there's no reason really not to do it either. They did it, its not a big deal either way.

I'm slowly becoming a Trek fan, having watched some TNG and TOS episodes lately. For movies I've seen Wrath and 09. Give it to me straight, is this worth going to the theater for?

Did you like '09? If so, absolutely.

Yeah, you'll kick yourself otherwise that you missed out on your chance to watch a Trek film in the theater.

Personally, no. But im not a huge trek fan. I loved the 09 movie, enjoyed ID but this one didn't quite resonate with me. It's got some fun moments but looking back on it, it's easily a rental.

Roddenberry barely gave any inflation about Sulu ever. His daughter was an element added by others and it was never established that he had a wife. Canonically Sulu is one pf the few to be shown to have a family and even on the old films the other characters are surprised by it.

Including Sulu s family even briefly allowed for a recognizable face when the film cut back to civilians on the Yorktown.

Red Letter Media said this is the most "Star Trek" of the new movies. That's what has me interested, along with Simon Pegg's script and a good time at the movies.

After years of minute interest in the franchise, I finally "get" Star Trek and I really like it. I'm going through TOS episodes now but I'll be getting Netflix soon and I read that they've got EVERY episode so I'll be going through a whole lot Trek in the near future.

For me , my favorite movie with the original crew was Star Trek VI :The Undiscovered Country.
Just my personal preference.
I seem to be in the minority

I think TUC is the second best Star Trek movie. Wrath of Khan is first, and this one is third.

Went to the theater today intending to see Suicide Squad but changed my mind to this at the window. It turned out to be a pleasant enough Trek episode, the kind of thing TOS might have done with a big budget. I enjoyed it but it was pretty paint-by-the-numbers. If you're a Trek fan you've seen this all before. Kirk getting restless? Check. Spock contemplating leaving Starfleet? Check. Diversity is strength theme? Check. All of which is fine, but it does suggest the franchise is, well, mature. 2.5/4 stars.

I only saw the original series recently but I think Beyond really is the most accurate Star Trek of the three movies.

How are boxoffice expectations going? Is it in least going to double it's budget?

Hard to say. Looks like it will do about 150 domestic when all's said and done. It's only got 66.5 OS but it still has China, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Korea and a bunch of other smaller markets to go. Like the magic 8 ball says, reply hazy, ask again later.

Well, if you've just started to "get" Star Trek then you'd be immensely pissed off with yourself if you didn't go watch this one in the theaters.

Not the least because it might be the last one in quite a while.

I don't know what the future of Trek movies will be if they decide not to do any more with this cast. The cast of TOS and TNG won't be doing any more movies, and I don't think there's a huge demand for movies with the Voyager or Enterprise casts.
