Star Trek Beyond - Part 3

Well, I hope the new TV show by Bryan Fuller is good, and thank GOD it's coming to Netflix. If it did stay on that CBS streaming service, it would've died.
I thought the Netflix thing was excluding the US and Canada, though?

Yep. Paramount and CBS are both doing their best to ruin the Star Trek property in movies and television by fumbling around with it.

50th Anniversary marketing opportunity missed on top of flat out just marketing it. Airing it on a platform it will actually be seen on? Missed.

It reminds me of how bad Fox mangles its own properties. They can take a series or movie franchise that was good and run it into the ground with boneheaded moves.

Seriously, i was totally misinformed about the Netflix deal and now I'm sorta upset. It's like they're self sabotaging their own franchise.

That's exactly what they're doing. All to prop up this stupid "network subscription" idea that's freakin' ridiculous. The reason other sites like Netflix and Amazon work is because they include content from various networks/studios, NOT JUST ONE. If every little network decides to make their content only available via their own exclusive subscriber service, the subscription streaming model will collapse because people can't afford to pay for all those.

Enjoyed this film. Its sad to see to take a hit at the box office worldwide. Paramount are pretty persistent with some of their franchises. If GI Joe could get a sequel, then there is hope with a reduced budget.

I believe the movie still has a good few large international territory's to open in as of yet. So hopefully international can save the movie a little bit.

Domestic it won't get more than $150 million at this point it seems, but add that to say $300 million internationally and I think Paramount would be happy enough with that to make another movie.

I'd say yes but that's just me being optimistic. I think it'll finish at 160-170..and if it's lucky enough..180, which is its budget.

What it needs to do is stay in the 10-8 million dollar range for the next few weekends. And remember, people still go to the movies during the weekdays too, so it'll end 2-4 million between each weekend.
The sad fact is that the movie has now tanked so badly that we have statistics from the first three weekends as follows:

July 22-24: $59,253,211
July 29-31: $24,754,339 (-58.2%)
Aug 5-7: $10,200,000 (-58.8%)

The official budget of this movie is 185 million dollars. Then you'll have to add marketing costs. I think the real question is whether it will do better or worse than Insurrection and Nemesis. Unless this movie somehow turns into a massive, and I do mean massive hit in China I think it will end up losing money.

I wish I could be more positive but this could be the one that killed the Star Trek movie franchise all over again.

It is not an outright bomb, so no, this isn't going to kill Star Trek.

Well, if that ends up being the case, I would blame the budget more than the box office. The reality is that Trek has never been a big-bucks movie franchise. Domestically, once you adjust for ticket price inflation, 7 of the 13 Trek films have fallen in the $150-250 million range and Beyond will likely be No. 8. Nor is OS much help: the best a Trek film has done internationally is $240 million from Into Darkness. The reboot is the only other Trek film to make more than $100 million OS.

With a $185 million budget, it seems to me that this thing was financially doomed from the start. Now, maybe this all makes sense to Paramount somehow; maybe Trek fans buy so many DVDs and box sets and they make so much from licensing and promotional tie-ins, etc., that it makes sense to set a budget it has no hope of recouping at the box office alone. Basically then it's a big commercial. I dunno. I guess the only way to tell is if we get a fourth movie and how much they spend on that.

The Motion Picture made 190m internationally adjusted for inflation.

Saw it, really liked it. I hope this isn't the end of this new franchise because I really liked the characters, the look of the movie, and the general Trek world. I think this movie solidified my status as a Star Trek fan.

Not a spoiler anymore, but here the concept art for the Enterprise-A.

Also, here is the interview with the man who designed the Enterprise-A: Sean Hargreaves.
This was the design I gave visual effects, so any changes beyond what you see here were out of my hands, but looking at the film its pretty close.

The brief was to beef up the neck and arms, but I took it upon myself to go further. Certain details and livery are not present as I took it to a certain level, time permitting. Also the classic red graphics were placeholders at the time.

I worked many long hours at work and after work and weekends on this, knowing the weight of the responsibility, which I didn't take lightly.

From growing up watching Star Trek in the countryside of Northern England, this was a great honor to be one of the few to be given the great responsibility to design this ship.

If it makes more than $300 million internationally, I will be very surprised. Not even Into Darkness was able to break $250 million overseas.

Saw it today, pretty decent though I could not get over how autrocious Karl Urban was

................ wut.

To each his own...

Edit: I am an idiot.

Urban's Bones might have been my favorite performance in the movie.

I made a mistake and thought the guy referred to the actor playing Scotty.

Karl Urban is one of the highlights of the Trek movies IMO. That is also the first I have seen anyone complain about his performance in the movie.

Looking at the new Rogue One trailer and reading and article on io9 about the failed attempts at Trek shows/movies over the decades got me pumped!

I really hope Paramount goes with a smaller budget spin-off with Carol Marcus and Christine Chapel as the leads.

I thought it was Urban's best to date as Bones.
