Star Trek Beyond - Part 4

I hope they can come up with a solid new story with this cast. Just dump the Kirk meets his father scenario.

Yes, keep this cast. I thought everyone was fantastic. :)

I just hope this isn't going to be a classic episode turned into a movie. Collider mentioned how Tarantino talked about how City on the Edge of Forever and TNG episode could make for a movie. Hopefully this was just stayed as spitballing and not the actual concept Abrams went for, because this is something Abrams would go for. Things people know. I'm gonna really hate this if this is just another rehash. I think COTEOF is one of the best pieces of writing on television, but for ****'s sake, keep it as an episode and do something new. Otherwise, this franchise will have become totally the missed opportunity than it somewhat already is.

That caught my ear as well, and I'm hoping that's not what this ends up being.

I got a certain level of enjoyment out of Into Darkness, but it still irks me that Khan-- the most recognizable TOS character outside the core cast, and antagonist of the most memorable TOS movie-- was the first tree they decided to bark up after establishing a brand new timeline.

I'd rather see all new stories myself, keep it fresh and comparison free. :)

At this point, they need to do something to breathe new life into Trek. The first film with the new cast was great, but the other two sucked. Into Darkness just felt like a remake of Wrath of Khan mixed with a remake of Abrams' first Trek movie, and Beyond just felt too small in scale and nothing in it was particularly interesting.

Agree. I could not get into Krall as a serious threat. Idris Elba just mumbled his lines about unity etc etc.

It was basically a TV episode like "Insurrection"

This would be amazing if it happens. I would love for Trek to get an a-list talent like Tarantino involved.

I enjoyed all three films. :(

I enjoyed only the first one, it could have been more Star Trek-ey but at least it put the crew together nicely, a promising start of the new series, then sequels came and they were insults to the ST brand.

I've just noticed Tarantino will not write the film. Wtf?

What? That would be weird. I thought this was all his own passion project.

It's because it's made by a group of people and a studio who aren't really hardcore ST fans with only passing knowledge through pop culture (Everyone knows Wrath of Khan) and classic ST just doesn't fit into the current business model of making an action tentpole movie. They think people don't want to see ethical quandaries, they want to see 'splosions, emotions, and Spock punching a mother****er. Studios need to spend a lot of money to get their investment back and appease shareholders. Making a mid budget ST movie that lacks a "great villain" and isn't action filled in this competing landscape just isn't appealing to all of those interests. Add all those up and you get these three past movies which have been a mixed bag.

I'm convinced if you keep true to what makes ST unique and make a great movie, people will want to see it. Just be smart about it.

Keep in mind Nicholas Meyer didn't know anything about Star Trek at all when he was given the gig to write and direct Wrath of Khan. In fact, he even told the story when he was offered Star Trek, he said, "Is that the thing with the pointy ears?"

I guess my point is being a hardcore fan of the source material wasn't necessarily a requirement for Meyer to create one of the most beloved iterations of the Star Trek franchise.

But the meaning of not being a ST fan is totally different and why worked and the other didn't. The problem is and the vast difference is Meyer brought something new to it at a different time before Wrath of Khan existed and was just trying to make a great movie. ST film canon was just starting out in its context in time and was just doing its own thing. This new crew just apes from that precedent in pop culture applied in a superficial way.

Chris Pine & Gal Gadot had amazing chemistry in Wonder Woman.

They should try to get her for a small part or cameo in the film.

So, R-rated Star Trek. Wasn't a fan of how Discovery executed the more "mature" content, but I have faith in Tarantino to pull it off. Hopefully he'll actually direct it and not pass it off to someone else.

This is the first time I've been excited for a Trek film in ages. And just when I'd given up hope on the franchise after Beyond & Discovery.

EDIT: You beat me to it as I was typing, Dyson.

That will definitely be polarising.

I don't like this. This is all wrong. What the **** is Paramount thinking here? Are they this clueless? Star Trek isn't inherently R rated material. And with Tarantino making this now, I'm worried. These new films got over the top in their action for ST now we gotta worry about how over the top they are in their violence? How did Abrams and Paramount agree to this? Are they really this out of touch?

Am I going insane here? This feels like a joke.

When I said I wanted something more outside the box and interesting than a straight up villain, I was thinking more like A Voyage Home where they save ****ing whales.

Well... God knows this will be interesting. I'm all for doing risky things, but this is the wrong franchise to do this type of risky thing where it just feels like a betrayal to what ST is.

I can't wait to see Mr. Spock punch a hole through someone's head.

The way I see it, you can't do worse than the Kelvin films or Discovery. Why not experiment and shake things up? The franchise has already hit rock bottom, so I say let Tarantino take a shot at it. How many true auteurs (gah, I hate that word) are willing to take on established franchises like this?

I'm intrigued solely because it's Tarantino and not, sorry to say, someone like Zack Snyder behind it.
