It's possible, or he's possessed like Gary Mitchell. Then again, it could also very likely be the "Worf Effect" in action again, where the metahuman strength of a character (Spock in this case) disappears when it suits the plot.

Gary Mitchell already died in the ongoing NuTrek comic series, which is considered to be canon.

also I highly doubt that it is just a depowered spock: cumberpatch was neck pinched by spock in those set photos and it had no effect on him.

that doesn't necessarily mean we are talking about Khan here. A variety of options come to mind: ridgeless Klingons for example. Or it could justbe a totally new character (like Nero was in (X)I), maybe genetically altered (by Peter Wellers company), or with metahuman powers granted by Apoll or Trelane or the Whale Probe, maybe even an android (Mudd had a couple of them lying around)... who knows?

I personally don't think that he will be Khan but from a financial point of view I would completely understand why they would put him in the movie. And if they have a good story I wouldn't care.

I'd prefer an original character myself. I wouldn't mind Khan but take advantage of this reboot and do your own thing.

And it's so strange before Cumberbatch you had all these Hispanic actors for the villain and we were sure it was Khan, then a pasty English guy is cast and we second guess things. It's all very strange.

I'd prefer one but I wouldn't be too bothered if the character weren't original.

And that is strange, who knows what the heck is going on? All I know is that I love Cumberbatch with a fiery passion after watching the first season of Sherlock so he can play whatever the hell he wants to. As a matter of fact I'm looking forward to his performance more than anyone elses. I already know and love the original cast so I don't have to hope that they will be good this time.

No one reads the comics enough to mind if the story is done in a movie.

The movie writers are involved in the comic. They consider the comics movie cannon. The fact that they already used this story line hints pretty well that they're not doing it for the movie. At least not specifically Gary Mitchel.

Aside from Gary Mitchell could Cumberbatch be playing Garth of Izar? He's also in Starfleet and perhaps they'll revision his "celluar metamorphosis" to giving him more abilities than just shapeshifting.

cumberbatch is not playing khan! i think benecio del toro was going to play khan and when they didnt get him they changed villains with cumberbatch as someone else!if they were gonna do khan wouldnt jj abrams use the guy from lost and the mayor from the dark knight since they are tight?

Unless he was kicked out of the continuum more than once, I doubt it. Q, really would not play like that, and have a fist fight with us pathetic mortals.

Unless your speaking of another Q (another entity in the continuum other then the one we know). But still, having that as a villain, it would never be fair, and a Q would not fistfight.

Ya a Q is way too powerful, he could blink his eyes and destroy the Earth. There is no believable threat. Q from (TNG) was an odd agent, while the rest of the Q really were not hostile as he could be (which was more curious and prodding than anything else).

Q fits more for asking questions, not as a villain. It would be a god like entity vs mortals. No match.

Well that's what i mean, don't have him as a straight up villain. More of an antagonist who likes to **** around with Kirk and Spock.

Ya I remember that from season one of DS9. However, again Q is joking around and playing with him. Those set reports did not look like some fun time with one another. I doubt its a Q. Even though its a different timeline, I still like to think it was Picard that had first contact with the Q continuum. Unless it is a fallen Q kicked out of the continuum, like the one episode where (our Q we know from TNG and DS9) Q is stripped of his powers. Or maybe some rouge Q but again if he had his powers, I just wonder why he would be weak enough to only fight Spock hand to hand.

It's increasingly likely that Benedict is playing an original character. I am warming up to the idea of seeing Khan again, but maybe it's best left for at least the 3rd movie, and in a completely different storyline than either Space Seed or Wrath of Khan.
