Will the World end, if all these Star Trek rumours prove to be not true at all? ;)

Trekmovie has been in meltdown these past couple of days I tell you.

Rumblings are the info from the other day may have been studio planted.

For the sake of other people's disappointment, I hope that the rumors aren't true.

I myself really wouldn't have a problem if they are bringing back Kahn. Too many people make the mistake in assuming that we'd just get a remake of Space Seed or TWOK in the event that character came back, IMO.

Though I do think Cumberbatch would be pretty odd choice for the role. Especially after they almost cast Benecio del Toro, who would've made a lot more sense at first glance.

Bring back the Borg I think would solve the problem. Other than the Q and the Romulans, they are about the only decently interesting villains that Star Trek has produced. But then again, I'm ready for them to ditch Spock and Kirk and start the franchise with a whole new set of characters a hundred years after the events of TNG.

Eh though its a different timeline, the Borg at this time are still far away in the Delta Quadrant. And the only way to get them to come would be a wormhole or Q doing what he did to Picard in TNG. So I don't think the Borg are an option.

del toro made since javier bardem made since even nestor carbeneau from lost made since.cumberbatch perfect gary mitchell not khan.they went after all latino actors even the guy from weeds was in the running so this is really weird if true.

I want a story that involves a Romulan/Klingon war with the Federation caught in the middle.

Since the field of villains is so limited, why not have a different type of threat? I mean hell Star Trek 4 is a about a probe that only accidently threatens the earth in trying to contact whales.

What happened to the imagination of this series?

I would prefer (and suspect they have) create(d) an original character for the film. Kahn worked well for the second film, but that was because he had a motive for revenge. Bringing him in would be akin to retelling "Space Seed," which was an okay episode, but, not one of my favorites.

Besides, there's a rainbow of possibilities that can be tapped into from the reboot: the destruction of Vulcan, the instability of the space-time continuum, those new and interesting Klingons, and a whole pantheon of alien species for Abrams & Co to interpret, and an infinite amount that can be created.

On a side note, has anyone been following the comics? The writers admitted that they will serve as a bridge to this film.

My biggest fear is another plot where the crew has to save earth from being destroyed.

Earth really needs to invest in some defenses. Why is the capital of the Federation always so under-defended?

Problem is....that's been every Star Trek film.

Not directly. For instance, TWOK wasn't about the crew trying to thwart Khan's plan to destroy earth. It's implied that's what would likely happen if he wasnt stopped, but it's not really the focus of the story. 5, 6, 7, 9 aren't at all about saving earth.

I remember reading a column, in Starlog I think, talking about how ridiculous the criticisms of Star Trek films can be some times.

Basically it was long the lines of: "Fans who criticize the movies for always being about using time travel to save the Earth are also the first ones to complain whenever a movie isn't about using time travel to save the Earth."

Earth really needs to invest in some defenses. Why is the capital of the Federation always so under-defended?

Ha ha, don't you remember the awesome "Mars Defense Perimeter" from TNG? The three tiny ships that were destroyed in 2 seconds by the Borg sneezing on them.

I would like to see some unholy terror defensive measures unleashed by earth on some unsuspecting enemy. You can't tell me that earth doesn't have any earth to space defensive measures. That would just be ignorant.

So filming has wrapped and they're moving into post. I feel like there's a great chance of a teaser trailer this summer… please!

It's been interesting seeing some of Pegg's Tweets lately....

Here's hoping. It would seem that they at least need to get out some sort of announcement trailer soon since it's been so long since the first film.

I think the problem with that is whether or not that is enough to carry a movie or to satisfy moviegoers nowadays. Even ST4 had the niche of the crew being on Earth in the 80's which was probably its biggest selling point.

What if a long lost probe from some sort of ancient civilization comes to find new intelligence species and Kirk accidentally fires on it making it mad? It works for a movie that's just designed to be an entertaining B movie anyway.

Concrete villains are probably an easier sell to a studio.

Ugh... I know everyone loves Star Trek IV and it does indeed work well as a fish-out-of-water sci-fi comedy... and maybe even as a TV episode... but as a Star Trek film, it f**king BLOWS. Trek films should be as epic as Star Wars films. That's why Abrams' last one worked so well. The humor and the characters were there of course, but it was also a Trek film as it was meant to be... on a GRAND scale. It's why Wrath of Khan worked so well too. It just had an epic feel to it.

I never want to see an "Aww, shucks!" comedy Trek film again.
