Star Trek Sequel - Part 1

while the Enterprise uniforms were dull...thats how we dressed in the Navy...we have blue jumpsuits that we wore only when we were out to sea...the red jacket from ST2 looked like a dress uniform and not something they'd wear all the time

Really, you all wear the same uniform? I saw what I think was a navy recruitment video, where there was also a construction worker, Indian chief and avid motorcycle enthusiast on the crew.

They wanted the crew on the Enterprise show to look more like present day astronauts, which didn't make for a very interesting look. I liked the jackets they wore on missions though.

I always really liked the uniforms in DS9 season 5 and up.

I preferred the ones from the earlier seasons where there was more colour. The later ones just looked all grey and you could barely see their coloured shirt underneath.

But then they become a bit like the X-Men uniforms. I'm glad that with something like the Avengers where they embrace bright colours and differentiation this should go against the dark and gritty feel that many try to inject into recent movies. I like the red, yellow and blue of the original series where people stood out. They were more like superheroes in a way and captured my imagination more than a dark monotone suit would have.

But it fit DS9's tone very well. It was pretty much a military uniform, as they were worn right as the Dominion War started to heat up.

I love the TOS ones as well, and the ones from the 09 film. I just think TNG and DS9's worked as well. DS9 was suppose to be more militaristic.

If there's one thing they shouldn't change, it's the skirts.

while I love the original costumes they don't really make sense for a pseudo military organization should wear...on away missions why would you aim for anyone but the guy in the bright yellow shirt....current military uniforms are indistinguishable from a distance

wonder when the teaser will hit, and I wonder if they can top the awesome of the first film's teaser:

that still blows me away years later, it is SO well done!

Or perhaps an overjacket worn by the Landing Party that is the same colour for all...

I like the original series and 09 starfleet uniforms the best.

And Enterprise also had some of the most boring outfits with everyone just dressed in the same colour and looked more like airforce mechanics in their overalls/ jumpsuits.

I like the bright primary colours from the original and am glad they kept the colour scheme and basic design. I wasn't particularly fond of the red jacket look they adopted from Star Trek 2 onwards either, for the same reason as not liking the Enterprise outfits. They all looked the same and rather boring too.

Yes, they looked like some kind of organized space force. Which is a terrible look for an organized space force. Though that looks works fine for the mid 22nd century. Something more futuristic would be appropriate for the 23rd century.

I can't take a character in a miniskirt seriously as a military officer. Granted, Uhura was a glorified telephone operator in the original series. But still. The design is a holdover from the sixties.

Correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm not a Star Trek expert, but doesn't the Star Trek version of warfare basically do away with the idea of infantry combat? The battles are fought by starships. Any combat done in person would purely be self-defence. So it doesn't really matter what they wear.

Yes, Starfleet aren't a military organisation. They're primarily explorers and bridge builders and don't simply exist as a ready defence force in times of war. That slightly changed at the time of DS9 and the Dominion War, but we're not at that time period with the original series characters.

Once the shields are down they start beaming troops over to other ships and such for hostile takeovers so infantry combat is still partially useful.

No, many of Starfleet's greatest martial art moves--balling up your fists and hitting someone on their upper back, lying on the floor and rolling towards a group of opponents to knock them down, or grabbing onto an overhanging tree limb or rafter to slowly, gently wrap your legs around the enemy's head--can only be done whilst wearing a colourful velour top.

Otherwise you'd look silly.

actually some of the current military female dress uniforms feature a miniskirt

they didn't do away with infantry combat...we just never saw it in favor of the cooler looking space battles.

while Starfleet isn't primarily a military organization...the defense of the Federation is one of their missions

Even during TOS there was conflict with the Romulan and Klingon Empire, and that raged one for a while. As time progressed "especially by DS9" they had become allies more or less. But the Federation always deals with hostile forces.

New Star Trek uniforms...if I had to guess they may be dress uniforms

Starfleet is definitely a military. It's just that they do more peacekeeping and exploring than warring. Having ranks, uniforms, weapons, warships, and court martials makes you a military.

I doubt anything those Starfleet officers wear can protect them against a phaser set to kill, so it doesn't really matter if the female crews wear miniskirt or not.

Either that or Scotty and Chekov were transferred to the package delivery division of Starfleet.

it wasn't a matter of protection...more of a matter that the best way to disorient a squad of star fleet people is by taking out the guy in yellow
