Back in November, the director said "they haven’t formally approached me," but when The Playlist sat down with Del Toro recently, he revealed that he did get a call about the job. "We got one phone call to my agent saying, 'Is Guillermo interested?' " he revealed saying, "And basically I have so much stuff already of my own, and I'm pursuing stuff that I'm generating already..." that he turned it down.

With numerous directing, producing and writing projects on his plate, Del Toro made it clear his own slate will keep him occupied, but he was still pleased to be approached. "It was very flattering," he said, adding: "It was just a phone call, it didn't go past that, it was very nice to be asked, but believe it or not, I'm busy enough."

The director also ruled out the possibility of helming any of the proposed/rumored spinoffs as well. So who should take on sequel? Del Toro believes it should be a filmmaker who can really dedicate themselves to the franchise, and he has his own suggestion. "I think the fans deserve somebody that is just going to immerse themselves completely. As a geek, I would have loved to see Brad Bird take it," he said.

So let's update this list to who won't direct Star Wars:

Offered script but turned it down:

JJ Abrams
Guillermo Del Toro

Won't take the job:

Brad Bird
Joseph Kosinski
Wes Anderson
Quentin Tarantino
Steven Spielberg

Who else said they won't direct it?

Spielberg unfortunately.

I'm starting to think it is Vaughn.

I wouldn't be too excited if he did get it because now it feels like he's getting it by default.

Yeah, Vaughn's radio silence is starting to be very telling.

it's a hard project to say yes too

if you are a young up and comer like duncan jones,Kosinski, blomkamp, etc. do you really want to take on such an enormous fantasy spectacle this early in your career

and for established film makers are not gonna want to jump right into it either look how many guys new to established turned down man of steel and that was a daunting project but star wars may be even more challenging

F**k me, you're right, Johnston hasn't taken himself out of the equation yet. I don't like this.

johnson isn't a bad director dont see the problem

Jumanji,captain america,october sky,rocketeer,hidalgo all very solid films

I hate each of these films save for maybe Jumanji and the first part of Cap. At his best he's mediocre, as far as I'm concerned. He's only suited for TV kids movies. Him directing SW would be all kinds of disastrous for the franchise.

Dumb question. Has Nolan been approached?

What hasn't he been approached for?

I think Nolan would work much better then many of the names listed however there are a few I would put above him. I think some just get narrow viewed when it comes to Nolan especially around here. He's a very smart man, and I'm sure he would understand his style would have to change if he ever did a Star Wars film, much like Spielberg knew he could not do the same type of style with Schindler's List compared to many of his other films. Again directors can change, especially the good ones. I would prefer him over many of the names on here, including Jon, he is too hit and miss.

Though Vaughn I would love, no to Johnston.

Johnston or Vaughn would both make me happy. Hopefully with Spielberg, Howard or Zemeckis as producer.

It's not going to be Johnston. George Lucas kept saying he wants to pass the torch a new generation. He's not going to pass it to someone who was alongside him unless he was desperate, and while many younger big name directors already said no, all of them won't say no to Star Wars.

I think Nolan would really think about it, considering he loves Star Wars. Someone get Ari Gold on the phone.

But I'm sure this month they will probably announce who it will be.
