Sci-Fi Stranger Things (Netflix) - Part 1

Eh, eye of the beholder and all that jazz.

Yeah fair enough. I'm sure he will get better for me next season, guess I was just waiting for a payoff that didn't come (this season). All that buildup would have been interesting for a guy who did eventually turn so I was probably just disappointed.

I'd need to watch the bit of aftershow they talk about, because on-paper, what they say to her seems odd, but if the camaraderie is apparent between them and it's just friendly ribbing or whatever, then it's probably not that deep.

I saw that last night before reading about this and it definitely felt like friendly banter to me. I mean it's hardly the topic that would have voluntarily come up on a talk show that was going to be permanently aired if anything about it hadn't been completely innocent.

My interpretation is season 2 is basically a season dealing with everybody's PTSD. From Mike not able to move on from El's vanishing, El not being able to move on from her past, Joyce and Will not being able to move on from the Upside Down, Hopper and his daughter issues, Nancy and Barb, etc. The whole season was them dealing with their specific issues to get to a stage where they can finally move forward. It might not seem a ton has happened, because it's not supposed to.

To go from standing still to being able to move forward is already a big step in terms of PTSD. And that's what that last episode signified. El confronting her anger and finally going home, Mike finally reuniting with El, Hopper getting a daughter, Will finally (seemingly) free of the Upside Down, Nancy got jusice for Barb, etc. I think people wanted to see more steps and progression, but really, it was just one step. it was a big step for each, but still it was one step. To be able to move past trauma and start living, until the next adventure at least. And that's where season 3 comes in, with everybody more or less resolved by their demons, it's time to see how their new selves will interact with each other and new threats. That's my interpretation anyway.

That's a really good way of looking at it. And it does make me appreciate some of the beats a bit more. Still, I do think they could have ironed out the pacing issues a bit better. Regardless, I still think this was a very high-quality season.

Finally finished Stranger Things 2. I really enjoyed it and it was really cool to see the Chaosium version of Nyarlathotep get some mainstream love.

I love how that one mask was Romero/Ledger’s Joker disguise.

‘Stranger Things’: Duffer Brothers tease “weirdly more intimate” Season 3

By reading that it might be a more "intimate" and character driven season, I'm thinking maybe my prediction will come true.
[BLACKOUT]ST3 may not expand more into The Upside Down but focus more on "earth" and the Hawkins Labs experiments descending on Hawkins[/BLACKOUT]

I think this is a smart move though. I think ST2 was about as big as the series needs to be. And especially with a few characters (Jonathan, Billy, Mike) kinda getting the short straw this season, I think it's better to go more character focused.

A spy thriller edge perhaps including the rest of the other people experimented on in Hawkins Lab would be a neat storyline for S3, [BLACKOUT]though I think Mind Flayer will come back, most likely in season 4. You don't tease something like that shot with him overlooking the school if you're not gonna build up to something eventually.[/BLACKOUT]

I mean yeah he'll always have a presence and he is still the end game. I just think he'll take a backseat to things

That and, it should be interesting seeing Eleven interact in a social environment.

What I find humorously ironic is that she and Will have had barely any interaction, yet Millie and Noah are best friends in real life.

I did like Eleven asking Joyce to see him in the finale. I would hope there's a good helping of interaction between the two of them in S3.

That would be a ridiculous tease to not get a payoff later. Almost as much as Billy not getting a payoff later!

That would be my hope for next season as well. While that last shot of this season shows the Upside Down story isn't over they should keep that way in the background in season 3. I keep hoping the Cold War era and setting get more focus in 3. If the Soviets have people like 11 and 8 it would be interesting to see their reaction to what went down in Hawkins. 11 can remote view... If a Soviet agent can do the same then...

Yeah I wasn't even really thinking about the Cold War stuff actually coming to fruition. That'd be cool.

The Cold War has always been in the background with the Hawkins lab. Eleven's whole purpose was to locate and spy on Soviet targets. Her finding the demogorgon and opening the portal was completely accidental.

If next season takes place another year later, I'd like to see the kids have to deal with their first year of high school and Eleven adjusting to life as a "normal" girl. If this season was about dealing with trauma, I could see the theme of Season 3 being about maturation. I mean, they aren't getting any younger. There probably will be a supernatural angle, but I'd like for it to center around the teens this time. The Duffers talked about wanting to do that with Billy this season but not having enough time. I think that'll carry over to next year, which hopefully means Will will finally catch a break. Kid's suffered enough.

I don't think there's any question about that. The kid cast is visibly aging so they will let time pass just like with this season.

Would be cool to see Will get a few normal episodes.

I want to see Joy being more of a mother to Jane/Eleven. To me, there was always a sweet aspect when Eleven discovered Barb was dead and Joy was right there to calm and comfort her. It's more likely if Joy and Hopper, as Jane's adoptive father now, get together in S3.

I loved that hug between Joyce and Jane during the reunion.

I don't think the only purpose of 11 was remote viewing. My sense was that was one thing out of a few objectives. That scene in season one felt more like a test. Also Modine in season one talks about how auspicious it will be that they make contact with something alien/other worldly, which is what led to the opening of the portal, which true, was an unintentional consequence.

I think what most mean about season 3 putting more Cold War influence is directly involving Soviet agents or other "metas" possibly. If any Russian assets have similar abilities to 11 then they easily can see through the cover story about what happened in Hawkins.
