Supergirl Supergirl General Discussion Thread - - - Part 12

Being touted as the first transgender superhero according to the main page.

The CW photoshop department often renders people unrecognizable. ;)

Hello anyone reading this,

This question has been bugging me for AGES and I really need an answer. In season 4 of Supergirl (I can't remember which episode) the earth's atmosphere was filled with kryptonite. This effected Supergirl and Earth X Supergirl, in fact it almost killed Supergirl. So is Superman (which we know exists because he has been in the series a few times) dead now? It's been established that Supergirl is stronger than Superman and if she couldn't survive such a thing how would he? There are so many questions and if anyone has any theorys or answers to share please do because I am clueless. Thank you.

Best Wishes,
SupermanLover23

Did this really need a thread of its own instead of you posting it in the general Supergirl thread? Can a mod merge this?

They've already indirectly answered some of these questions in the series.

Superman was off world when they flooded the atmosphere with Kryptonite. They explained it earlier this season. And if you know Superman has been in the series a few times, then how can you ask if he's dead now if he just was in the Crossover episode before the winter break? :loco:

As DR says, it was stated both in the season premiere and in Elseworlds that Superman and Lois were off-world on Argo City when that happened, so no, Superman was fine.

Merged w/ General Discussion thread.

Also the other Supergirl isn’t Earth-X Supergirl. Kara's Earth-X doppelganger was Overgirl who went nuclear and died at the end of Crisis on Earth-X. The other Kara we're seeing is a blank slate clone created at the end of season three when Supergirl used the Harun-El(black rock) to defeat Reign. The EPs said they are doing an interpretation of the Superman Red Son story so the other Supergirl we're seeing is the Red Daughter. Melissa takes great care to make each character different Overgirl wasn't the same as red kryptonite infected Kara and the Red Daughter will again be different.

A couple random SG-related items: Chris Wood wrote/directed a short film starring Melissa and Carlos from the The Flash that, based on the poster, looks...interesting!

The plot:
Follows a man and woman stubbornly staying in their toxic marriage.
So, if there are any Kara/Cisco shippers out there...this is probably not the film for you, lol.

In other news, according to a new study done by a third party analytics company, Supergirl is the 3rd most-popular superhero show of 2018 by a metric that factors in ratings, online viewing, social media activity and pirating. This doesn't only mean shows that aired in 2018, as it includes shows that are no longer even airing, like Smallville.
To get a true sense of popularity, you need to look at more than just viewer numbers. Parrot Analytics, a data science company who measure audience demand for TV content by assessing how viewers interact with a brand online, measure audience demand, engagement, and viewership, assessed through everything from global file-sharing and peer-to-peer traffic to social media activity.
ScreenRant has their Top 20 (The Flash is #1): EXCLUSIVE: The Most Popular Superhero Shows Of 2018

Interesting that the top 4 are all DC shows, though they admit Titans' high ranking is likely skewed due to a smaller sampling window. I think the Marvel/Netflix shows are hurt by their binge-model, as they get plenty of buzz for a few weeks upon release, then it goes away. Whereas the ones on broadcast networks air throughout the year so they keep a more steady online presence.

Best news for Supergirl to be renewed for the 5th season. With a 5th season comes a 100th episode for Supergirl and Legends.

Now they can focus on making the second half of the 4th season great.

I hope all the Arrowverse shows for next season will be tie-ins to the Crisis On Infinite Earths.

I can see the 8th season being the final one for Arrow than the others. Same with Supernatural's 15th season.

I thought that too, UNTIL Arrow climbed back up in the ratings, which is a rare thing. Now I think CW will be gun-shy about pulling the plug, and as long as Stephen Amell wants to stay on and doesn't make too many pay-raise demands whenever contract negotiations come back up, it'll stick around like another Supernatural. Same for Flash. Grant and Stephen don't really have any other great prospects, so I think they're content to stay on as long as they can.

SG I think might end after S7 as I think that's when Melissa's contract will be up and I sense her wanting to do other things. Legends and Black Lightning might not make it past seasons 5 or 6 due to ratings. Legends' higher budget doesn't help.

I get the sense that after Melissa was doing Broadway that she may be more interested in pursuing other things as I can see her being the one in demand after Supergirl.

It's both Legends and Black Lightning that are a concern.

Legends and Black Lightning are both part of the mass renewal so it seems CW wants to get them to syndication. Now would've been the time to cut bait on black lightning but generally season 3 means at least season 5 or 6 to get to syndication.

Melissa has made herself into an in demand actor for screen and stage, she won't have a bit of trouble finding work once Supergirl ends. I agree she's shown interest in other types of projects and has even said she doesn't want to brand herself. IMO she's the strongest actor in the Arrowverse and one of the best currently on TV. I don't think there's much of anything that could entice her to sign another multi-year contract, she's got other challenges to peruse. .

Supergirl will hit that milestone, but Legends will need at least two more seasons to get to 100. Don't forget each season of Legends contains fewer episodes than Arrow, Flash, or Supergirl due to the higher production costs.

If Melissa does want out eventually, it may be worth her while being vocal about that now, so that the writers have a clear path of where they can take the show that allows her to move on.

It'll suck, because if the other shows continue to do well and make S10, it's unlikely (due to Melissa and her ambitions) that Supergirl will follow suit there, not unless they reduce the episode number so she has more time to do other projects. The show just wont work long-term if she's not in a lot of it.

Begs the question of whether they'd retitle the show and continue on with the other characters, or maybe she'll be the one to sacrifice herself via Crisis, and Supergirl will wrap next season? That'll take a few people by surprise, I'm sure. If they're merging the Earth's too, then there's a chance they could recast her and have an older version of Supergirl for the Arrowverse moving forward?

Do young Supergirl adventures with the actress who played her in the Midvale episode last season. And get the actress who played Chyler as well. If they do rewrite reality, then they can have Kara become Supergirl younger when she was a teenager instead of as an adult.

Whilst I wouldn't object to this, by doing so they'd have to replace each and every other character (except for maybe Jonn). By simply making Kara older, then can still utilize the other characters, just make it so that Kara landed on Earth at a younger period, and was the big sister, opposed to the younger sister of Alex.

Please don't retitle or recast IMO that would be disrespectful of Melissa's portrayal. At some point all TV shows end and sometimes it's best to let them. Let's not worry about what will happen years from now and enjoy what we have now. Who's to say Flash or Arrow don't end before Grant and Stephen are ready to move on. The Arrowverse does present a unique challenge because the shows are connected but hopefully plans are made.

I think the next thing WB will do with Supergirl is the rumored movie. I'd rather see a movie with a teenage Kara than a TV show. Whoever plays Supergirl in a movie will have some big over the knee boots to fill because Melissa's version will be fresh in everyone's minds. Just the rumor of the movie had people outraged if Melissa doesn't play the part, much more than Grant not being the movie Flash.

I don't think it would be disrespectful to recast her if she was leaving by her own decision. If they made it a fluid move, with another actress stepping in to assume the Supergirl mantle then I could see it.

But I don't see Benoist leaving for another few years. If she likes playing Supergirl and they keep giving her time to do side projects, then I could see her staying until the show has reached its end.

If the show does last past her contract, and she decides to go, then I would like to see a version of Powergirl stepping into the role

I don't see Melissa leaving for another few years either. I think she's in for the duration of her presumably seven year contract. By all accounts she loves the role and the people she's working with and as you said Berlanti is making accommodations for her side projects so she's a happy camper. The issue will be what happens when her contract is up plus the talented supporting cast specifically Chyler and David may be ready to move on by that time too. I'm not by any means wishing for the show to end but I would rather have the show reach it's end when her contract does and not continue without her. To use your example if Berlanti wants to do a Powergirl show then do that as it's own separate show, don't turn Supergirl's show into Powergirl's.

It basically would be its own show, like when 'The Closer' starring Kyra Sedgwick became 'Major Crimes,' with Mary McDonnell.
I think it would be a nice in-universe transition rather starting up something else entirely new.

But! All pie-in-the-sky mental meanderings that will probably never come about.:cwink:
