Supergirl Supergirl General Discussion Thread - - - Part 12

With Superman, it's been the opposite, hasn't it? Clark Kent is the alter ego and Superman is who he is. I imagine Kara is the same way, Kara Danvers would be her 'mask.' But they've muddied that up a bit in the series haven't they?
No, it’s not that black and white for either character. Both personas are something of a performance for each and the “real person” is somewhere in between - the person they only get to be with close friends and loved ones. So it’s really like 3 separate characters, not two. I like to think of their “Super” persona as our equivalent of a “public speaking” mode - the way we are when we know all eyes are on us so we are careful to be on our best behavior. It’s their celebrity mode, essentially, as they’re on guard not to reveal anything too private or personal. They don’t get to be that person who just wants to kick back, relax and have a beer and watch movies or whatever when they’re in the uniform. Then in their “work” persona, they get to let their quirks show more freely and be more personal, but they also have to downplay their more “super” attributes. It’s only with those truly closest to them that they get to totally be their true selves.

I wish Laura Benanti was still playing Kara's mother. She seems better suited with both of them being Broadway actresses. You can imagine all of her mother's singing talent passed onto Kara. Erica doesn't seem quite as talented.

BTW, Laura's Christmas segment of Melania was great.

I thought Benanti was great on Colbert too, but your reasoning for preferring her over Durance doesn't resonate with me. Singing isn't as important to Kara (or Alura). Sure, Kara can sing, but it's not a significant aspect of her character. It's also not uncommon for parents and children to have different talents. And, for what it's worth, though Durance may not be Broadway level, she does like to sing. I personally prefer Durance not only because of the legacy aspect of her being a part of the Super mythos already, but also because she and Benoist look more alike. In short, while it's fine to single out singing, I wouldn't rate it is as highly in terms of qualifications for Alura.

I liked Benanti, but I prefer Durance. I would love for them to bring her more into the show. With how she helped out during the Reign arc, I actually see her as the closest we'll get to having a live-action version of Superwoman.

I agree that Durance has a little more resemblance to Melissa. Especially when the guy who played Zor-El is taken to account. She could very believably be their daughter, imo. I liked Benanti, but I had a harder time seeing the mother/daughter thing with her.

I just cant get the nasty taste out of my mouth with Benanti having to play a twin with a clip on hair extension.

Benanti and Benoist would've been great for a Supergirl musical episode.

Maybe Laura can come back and play the FLOTUS instead. :o

Catching up on Riverdale, I noticed that CW really wanted to get their money out of using the Smallville farm again.

Is Kara meant to be short sighted on the show? Or does she wear her glasses only as a disguise? But if that were the case, why did she wear glasses in the pilot before she even became Supergirl? And didn't she wear glasses in that Midvale episode as young Kara?

And why is she short sighted as a Kryptonian? Is Clark also short sighted?

And if she is short sighted, then doesn't she still needed glasses as Supergirl to see? I don't think she suddenly puts in some contacts.

The glasses were designed for her by Jeremiah, lined with lead to dull her senses. They had a flashback scene about it in the first season.

The next question would be; why does Kara wear glasses on Earth-1 where nobody knows her except the people that already know she's Supergirl?

Because she's used to it and its part of her Kara Danvers look. Kara Danvers is more Kara then Supergirl is.

Even though she doesn’t NEED them anymore as she has more control of her powers, they probably still make life a little easier for her too when she doesn’t want the full strength of her super senses.

Was my post deleted? I thought I posted something here after Primal Slayer. Unless I imagined I did.

I think you imagined it, as I'm seeing no traces of a deleted post.

Maybe I was thinking of posting something but never got round to it. I can't even remember what I was going to post anyway.

The Hat sounds like something they came up with off the top of their heads.

Well, the Elite were Superman villians in the comics, but I'd have to check on the hat specifically. I bet they thought it was a nice way to cap off the season.

The Hat is indeed from the comics, and yes, I got the puns.
