Supergirl Supergirl General Discussion Thread - - - Part 12

Again, I doubt it would happen, but it just seems weird, IMO, to still be called Supergirl. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Benoist's version of Kara Zor-el the oldest the character has ever been?

Still, won't happen. More curious than anything. In the end, happy to leave the moniker to Alura Zor-el.

Day-um!

Some have lost their jezus over pants, let's not send them totally over the edge.

Oh almost forgot Julie Golanzo has been promoted to series regular.

Not surprised, considering what I've heard about her role.

Promoted? She wasn't even in it in the first place as a guest or recurring. Who is she even playing?

Since some have expressed wishes to remain unspoiled, I shall start using spoiler tags here!

She's playiing Andrea Rojas (Acrata from the comics). Reportedly, Lena sells CatCo to her, and since James is leaving soon, I'd imagine she'll be taking his spot in the big office.

And she's probably "promoted" from recurring to series regular as soon as Mehcad's gone.

If your referring to me with spoilers, I'm fine with what's been done here in the past. My selfish wish/request is as much as possible for everyone to keep the CoIE stuff out of this thread because I'm not at all hyped for it and don't want to wade through CoIE stuff here. That's why I created the CoIE thread which also has an added bonus of allowing anyone who want's to limit CoIE spoilers to be able to do that by avoiding that thread.

Oh ok, I misunderstood. Back to playing fast and loose with spoilers here then, lol!

I don't think it could, there is ALREADY a DC character of that name. The same with Batgirl, she can never be called Batwoman because, there is already a DC character named Batwoman. Invisible Girl was able to move on to Invisible Woman because there was not a Marvel character named the Invisible Woman, therefore it could be used without conflict.
One way to resolve this would be to call Supergirl by her Kryptonian name "Kara" as she's grownup now and everyone is familiar that she was called Supergirl earlier ( also the fact that she's from another planet.)

But then wouldn't that make it easier to know her identity as Kara Danvers if they have the same first name?

You know she was always a regular, but u dont know what character she is playing??????

Yeah, which is why I prefer her secret identity to be called as "Linda Danvers". If they make a movie they should use either Linda Danvers or Linda Lee.

Who? Julie Gonzalo? She never played in Supergirl before. I remember her from the 2012 Dallas.

But… that’s just it. There isn’t a Superwoman. As per Wikipedia, there are several different characters (close to a dozen?) with the same designation. This would seem to invalidate the notion that the name has been reserved for anyone in particular. Indeed, one of the “Superwomen” mentioned is a future/elseworlds version of Kara Zor-El, who’s old enough to use the “woman” moniker.

Moreover, I would contend that most folks (apart from comic book aficionados) have never even heard of Superwoman. Or if the have, it’s because they equate her with Supergirl . So if (just hypothetically) Kara were to switch names, I don’t think it would cause much confusion among the TV audience - or much outrage from the “massive” Superwoman fanbase.

What are you talking about, yes there is......whether or not they have heard of Superwoman, it would be stupid to change the name. That would assume then that at one point Batwoman was Batgirl, and we know that is not the case. They are two different people. Supergirl and Superwoman are two different people, and on top of that it would take any chance of Superwoman being on the series in the future. She had a big run in Supergirl New 52.

Well Barbara was going to transition into Batwoman at one point in time but DC nixed it lol. Sure Kara could always take the Superwoman title but DC aint ever going to let her grow up and it's just been a title that is generally reserved for some kind of "imposter"

Yes, and I want that storyline at some point..

Not being familiar with this stuff, I had look up the specific iteration of Superwoman in your posted image. This one, among several others, seems to be relatively recent (from the New 52/New Earth/New Krypton era?); she’s actually (SPOILER!) Lucy Lane; she’s somehow evil; and she’s eventually killed off (though I guess there’s a resurrection in a subsequent story).

And this is the version of Superwoman that you fancy appearing in Supergirl, yes? I.e., Lucy Lane (Jenna Dewan or a replacement actor) would return - this time as special guest villain in an extended arc. And because of this possible/hypothetical appearance, the “Superwoman” name needs to be reserved for her, yes?

Well, fair enough. But…

Idle musing #1: It could be argued that there’s more dramatic (symbolic, meta-textual, etc.) value to Kara Zor-El transitioning to “Superwoman” as compared to using this name for a mere villain du jour. And if you really wanted an evil, superpowered Lucy Lane, is there much lost by just calling her “Ultra Woman” or some such?

Idle musing #2: A 30-year-old hero who’s still called “girl” might be a variation of the “elephant in the room.” It’s not a big deal as long as no one calls attention to it. But if you have Supergirl facing off against Superwoman, you do kinda call attention - unnecessarily, unintentionally - to the “politics” of the name.

Finally, a disclaimer: I’m not - at all - married to the idea of “Supergirl” (the show and the character) getting a name change. Indeed, I highly doubt it will happen. I’m just saying - playing devil’s advocate - that such a change could be interesting and could be made to work.

Gotcha
.. . Superwoman got her own comic in Rebirth....

This is a good shot if the new suit's material, thanks for psoting
The material is what makes it, imo, and it's hard to tell based on set pics, but I think the new suit might actually be a step down in that department. It looks cheaper to me. But I'll wait to see how it looks on camera before I judge.

But there's a reason she kept her suit for 4 straight seasons while everyone else's seemed to change with each season: they got it right with SG the first time.
Does this help in your assessment of the material on the new suit.

Yeah, looks better there. Interested to see how it actually looks on camera in the episodes, though.

Isn’t the new costume - at least from the waist up - more-or-less the same as the old one? Moreover, doesn’t the new costume borrow from a now standardized design template that’s already been used for Superman, Dark Superman, Mon-El and Overgirl? Finally, isn’t the textured “fabric” the same for all of them?

Practically, this would help keep costs down. And in-universe, you could say that it represents a particular alien/Kryptonian aesthetic. :word:

I'm not sure yet - the material of the new costume looked different in set pics than the material of the old one used to, but in the pic above it looks pretty much the same. So like I said, I want to wait and see how it looks in the episodes. I suspect there was more money spent on the original, as is often the case with these shows as the pilots are where the money goes, and the others you mentioned were imitations of the original with cheaper materials, but I dunno.

The material in the new suit looks slightly different, less shine, thicker compared to the original one.

Though I dont know why they are so obsessed with the stitching lines when it comes to making Arrowverse costumes. Probably does come with the cheapness but still.
