The Dark Knight Rises The 79th TDKR General Discussion & Speculation Thread

I'm cool with it. I do have issues with the word "Legend" as it has no real relation to the series other than the newly named "The Dark Knight Legend".

I get what they're going for, seems a little heavy handed is all. I'm not crying over it. I think my Bane T-Shirt that says: "Ends" it's just as effective.

I've thought that the 'legend' part is describing Batman as a whole, what he became, meaning once he's outed the mystique is effectively over but he can still endure as a symbol.

I also posted this on Facebook, Nolanfans and Tumblr. It has no traction but to be fair i'll put it here too.

I don't see a specific thread for the trailer or anything and it's not really all that interesting but whatever.

So I’m probably sure everyone realizes that on some level the trailer 3 is heavily focused on Catwoman as a character than anyone else. This is the obvious use of the trailer and the one I’m least interested in but in case someone didn’t get it:

Catwoman’s dialogue throughout the trailer starts off one way and slowly progresses into something else. Her first line being, almost bragging,”There’s a storm coming” and being adaptable and as it goes on shows that maybe perhaps even for her this wasn’t what she wanted. The most telling part of the trailer in terms of Catwoman is the line “You don’t owe these people anymore” because it shows us where her mind is at. All those people who insisted she would have a Robin like place in the film are essentially silenced with this line. It shows she’s not as aligned with the Gotham plight as Batman is. She can abandon them but as we know Batman can’t. This will keep them at some sort of odds and I wonder if it’ll drive a wedge between them.

Now the real trailer breakdown is much more interesting and I’ll take it step by step.

Opening credits, blah blah, whatever old Bruce… There’s a storm coming, their conversation is being juxtaposed with images of the prologue. This is the storm, while they’re dancing something serious is going on, Bane is hijacking planes and crashing them with no survivors. Now as I mentioned in the other breakdown there’s a very interesting dynamic of the visual image of rising compared to the title. How much rising do we see? Not a lot and I don’t think that’s accidental.

Our first falling images if Bane as he hurls towards the camera but catches himself, like the monster he is falling towards the audience. Bane is coming and he’s not going to enter Gotham, he’s going to land on it.

Something interesting is that the difference of characters looking at each other is presented only through adversaries. Rises being a theme in it, you’d think there’d be a lot of subtle ways to look up but in the trailer the only looking up we see is through fear or angst. I’ll come back to these but the first is “What are you” he’s looking UP at Bane in total fear and calmly the villain is looking DOWN at him as he says “I’m Gotham’s reckoning”

Pushes the button the cave FALLS sealing some cops in, the stadium COLLAPSES killing the team.

Joseph Gordon Levitt looking at what? COLLAPSING bridges.

Again adversaries looking at one another, not eye to eye but rather Blake looking DOWN at Selina and she looking UP at him in a tense conversation, where clearly they are on opposite sides of right,

Our first rising image is Bruce, climbing…This means so much. It is the title of the film, it is the goal, the question is whether it can be fulfilled.

Next images? Bruce looking UP at Bane and Bane looking DOWN at Bruce followed by Bruce (presumably) falling DOWN the well. Our hopelessness is rising, through all these images of falling.

“Hope is lost”

blake and kid looking down

Bane DROPPING the cowl.

Catwoman looking DOWN at something or someone, seemingly regretful, if this is Bruce it’s still adversary, perhaps she lead him there. Not one person has looked UP to Bruce yet…

Judge;s character knocking Blake DOWN that thing.

Bane looking down at the Camera and kneeling just as “You should be AFRAID of him as I am.” a position of dominance.

But as things start to climax we got a lot of eye to eye shots. Batman and Bane, Alfred and Bruce.

Gordon and Batman…

Batman looking DOWN at the city, a position of dominance and power.

Catwoman looking at Batman, slightly upward as she tells him he doesn’t owe them anymore.

Bane furiously eye to eye with someone

Blake looking UP holding his hands up a position of weakness.

Fox looking DOWN at a screen but then suddenly eye to eye with something in the room “You’ve given them everything” *HINT HINT*

Batman fighting Bane after that line *HINT HINT*

“Not everything” = Shot of Gordon *HINT HINT*

“Not yet” Batman looking down at Catwoman…here we go…the hope is returning.

Then the most important shot of the trailer. Gordon, wind blowing looking increasingly up as something rises in front of him.

Every shot from here until the car thing is eye to eye notice… The Battle lines have been Drawn, these are our fighters.

The last part is more humor but the cop is looking up astounded at something. This isn’t a car…

So the potential is there, the question is are we going to get Bane looking UP at Batman and Batman down at Bane. This is the only shot left desired from the given context.

What do you think?

Well the "legend" line from Ra's was very prominent in Batman Begins promotional material. That and we've deciphered already that it could be referring to the end of the mythical status of Batman.

We think alike :up::woot:

Yes, however I think for a general Idea. "It ends" works a little better. It encompasses everything including the end of this series, which I think is an important point to consider when sizing this film up.

It hasn't been done before and I hate the "Epic Conclusion" title cards.

The TDKR cast should have an "epic jar" and donate what they collected to charity.

Who was that poster here who had a loooooong rant before about how he hates the word "epic"? :lmao:

Rag, Batman has looked down at Bane twice in the trailers. One as a fading symbol (as Bane is lumbering towards him to put the finishing touches) and the other as a restored and strengthen symbol. Does that qualify, or are they different scenarios?

That would be a lot more community minded and meaningful than a BB 'fear' drinking game.

LOL my friends and I actually did that back in 2008 (before TDK came out). Now we're into Game of Thrones drinking games. I think I'm going to propose a TDKR 'rise' drinking game this year when the DVD comes out. :word:

This is a rising look. Even worse, as Bane gets closer they get closer to eye to eye and Bane may even rise above him. I hadn't considered this shot (I was only doing trailer 3)

What's the second one?

What's the second one?

Trailer 2, where Batman appears anew and pissed off at the stairs. Batman stands at the top awaiting Bane's assault.

actually you're right. It started as "It All Ends Here" and was shortened to "It All ends"

Though, I could swear I saw one that said: "It Ends", maybe not.

If Not, TDKR should have scooped that up.

A man has said.

Ah yes.

They come eye to eye though Bane is "rising" up the steps in that shot but the idea that Batman is in that position again, with more confidence and anger shows a rebirth, a reprieve from the images we saw in the Sewer/Batcave.

It's playing off the same image with different feelings.

omfg... so I just watched that part of the trailer again and I realized what I love so much about Tom Hardy's Bane... his walk.

When he's walking up the stairs is hands are gripping his vest, and as Batman throws the haymaker Bane's hands are already at shoulder level so it makes it easier for him to block punches. In almost all the shots of Bane walking/standing his hands are gripping his vest. I love it

Sorry back to the rising looks :yay:

This? I LOVE Batman's face here. So pissed off! :hrt:

The suit in TDKR just fits him so much better.......... and Batman looks more menacing in that scene than Bane does IMO. Yeah his first punch gets blocked but I think Batman is going to counter with a few brutal blows. He's surrounded by the mayhem Bane caused and he just wants to stop him at all cost.
