The Amazing Spider-Man The Amazing Spider-Man General Discussion & Speculation Thread - - - - - - P - Part 17

The Avengers got great reviews because it's a great movie. If TASM happens to be a great movie then it should be able to do the same. No excuses.

Many people were skeptical and cynical about X-Men: First Class and people ended up loving it. So I'm not one to think that people or most critics (some are admittedly trolls and want site hits) come in wanting to hate a movie. That's a big pie of bologna.

There are only two critic RT ratings for superhero movies that I think are way too low.

Batman (89) which got a 72%. I think that's at least 10 points too low.

and Blade which got a 55%. That's at least 20 point too low IMO.

The other superhero movies have ratings that are fair or too generous. So I have little reason to believe ASM will be any different.

Usually aren't movies that are that old, have a pretty small sample size compared to the 200-250 review most major movies get nowadays.

Yeah. That's why when it comes to movies pre-1999 RT is sort of useless.

For some reason the smaller the pool of esteemed critics the harsher the overall critical rating.

Guess they're harder to impress and are very picky.

The Avengers was also approached with high skepticism and cynicism as well. So if reviewers and people felt that it was that good then in all likelihood they were genuine feelings and not as skewed as you may think it was.

The only positive outlet for The Avengers pre release was here in The Avengers section and other fan dedicated places. In all the comment sections throughout the internet I'd see negative backlash. That usually happens with experimental or unproven endeavors like The Avengers or reboots like this Spider-Man film.

The odds are against them so when they get really positive word of mouth from the public and reputable outlets alike I'm more than inclined to think that they were being honest.

Wow I didn't know about all that negative backlash for TA. Sadly I'm basing my reviews off RT (as much as I hate doing that myself since some of my all time favorite movies got panned, or at least heavily slighted, according to that site) but in all fairness RT is where the vast majority get their new and insight into upcoming movies anyway

As much as I don't care about it and let it hold very much weight in my opinion, and as naive and childish as it might sound, I'd still love for TASM to capture a nice high fresh percentage on RT... but even more so just be a great movie so I can have something new to enjoy for years to come

You're sort of missing the point. There's a smaller pool because A.) It's from a movie made in 1989 and RT couldn't find all the reviews from back then from 200 or something publications B.) Some of the reviews are from as late as 2007.

Like I said any movie pre-1999 rating isn't accurately portrayed in Rotten Tomatoes. I'm sure had they been able to get more reviews from the time of the release it'd have a higher rating.

I feel it's the opposite with a smaller sample size. Some of the highest rated movies on there, and seemingly the only 100% fresh movies are those with relatively few (<50%) reviews. I'm sure those movies ratings would have gone down if they had 200 individuals critiquing them instead of 30.. much wider range and audience to try to appease... but wth do I know maybe its the other way

forget SM3 this movie honestly looks like it'll be better than the Avengers (overrated imo)

Not at all.

I'm also basing that theory on the lower metacritic scores for all movies.

But perhaps I should've made that clear in my post. :woot:

So does anyone know when the embargo is going to be lifted for TASM reviews or when the next big press screening is?

what do guys think of this

Amazing Spider-Man" Review Embargo

http://www.movieswithbutter.com/blo...-it-if-youre-not-critic-and-can-write-your-re

This morning, I saw a review from SlashGear.com via **************.com. SlashGear is a tech site that writes about electronics, gadgets, and the tech industry, which makes them fully qualified to put up a full review of the movie on their site and get Sony’s OK to do so.
The only problem I have with the review is it reads like a studio plant. Chris Burns normally writes about tech stuff for SlashGear. If you didn’t know that, you’d think the review had actually came straight from Sony's marketing department.
He starts with the special effects, “...while the refresh of the Spider-Man movie series has a story that is thrilling in its relative newness, it’s the mise en scene that will strike you hardest.”
Regarding the swinging scenes, he says “there’s no holding back the fact that Spider-Man takes the great high-flying feeling you get in the first three movies and keeps ahold of it fully... he looks one heck of a lot more real, and feels that way too.”
And of course, “as far as the presentation goes, this is certainly a film you’re going to want to see in IMAX 3D.”
That could be exactly how Burns feels about the film, but why is a tech writer allowed to break the embargo and online critics whose job it is to review films have to abide by it? Well, we all know why. Sony's marketing department couldn't have written a more positive review if they tried.

Well there is a point of why you would let this person pass the embargo as oppose to the others.

Sounds like the highly subjective opinion of someone ready to hate ASM.

There's no real evidence of Sony pushing slashgear for a positive review. Except for the weak "it's sounds like a plant" accusation.

As usual the haters are trying to spread negativity to hurt a movie they haven't seen.

The Avengers is a totally different case. When the reboot was announced, pretty much the majority hated it while almost everybody loved the idea of The Avengers. The hate for TASM stuck and was fueled by the lousy set pics and also just by the facts that there was a new cast and a new costume, and until this day people not only complain, but want to find as many bad things as they can find, so they end up whining about some really stupid stuff. Many people will be biased and even after seeing the movie there will be those who refuse to like it because they hated it before, and no offence by any means, but it would be delusional to totally deny that fact

Though, X-Men: First Class was a pretty good example backing up your point, but I think Spider-Man is in even deeper **** since it's arguably the most popular superhero in the world

u guys are missing out on the live japanese world premiere. they are playing the full soundtrack before it starts

That's simple...it's not a plant. He is a tech writer. Webb wants to deliver a memorable 3-D experience with Spider-Man. Up until now, only a handful of films have managed to impress audiences with 3-D effects. Mainly because they are tacked on at the very end. Webb wanted 3-D effects from the get go. It makes one helluva difference. Look at Avatar for example.

Critics are reviewing films by looking at a plethora of different elements. Story, acting, stunts, writing, lighting, directing...the list goes on and on. This tech site is very vague in their descriptions. That's why they are probably allowed to post this.

But, if I remember correctly, I thought that review was requested to be taken down by Sony a few days ago?

Don't get me wrong. I actually like the new poster with Spidey and Gwen.

But uhhhh....

superman-poster-lois.jpg

These type of posters are done all the time.

^ I can't recall one other superhero poster that looks like those two... the similarities here are striking. Can't deny it. Them looking at each other. Her hands on his shoulders. The background of the cities.

Yup, Lizzie's going to have a lot of screen time. I've also come to the conclusion that Lizard purposefully goes after Pete at his high school, seeing as he discovers Pete's identity (We see Lizard holding Peter's camera in the sewer, as well as talking to him while transforming in his lab), and also
the behind the scenes footage shows Lizard's mo-cap actor attacking Peter in plainclothes.
Interesting indeed.

Yeah peter gets thrown around the school a lot

I never get this. In what way did Batman Begins under perform? It didn't make TDK numbers, but as the first Batman film after Batman and Robin, it did very well, making WAY more than just doubling its budget($372 million with a $150 million budget).
.

SM1 made 850 million out of the same budget

Most of you already know that I'm first a batfan. But I really love spiderman, I read a lot of stories back in the day, and I liked Raimi's movies (including SM3, even if it was heavily flawed). But I've been anticipating TASM since they announced they were gonna do it. And I'm really waiting for it now. I'm sure it will be a great movie.

I agree about a lot of people being against a reboot so soon, and obviously, there are still haters. But I also think the GA is now ready for this new take on the character. Not only do I think the movie will surprise a lot of people, but I also think it's box office results will be good.
