I told myself not to watch anything this past week. I do think Marvel showed a little too much.

Cap:TWS got the same "too much footage" criticism before it was released. The elevator fight, the opening boat fight sequence, Cap chasing Winter Soldier and throwing the shield at him, the "if they're shooting at you, they're bad" clip, etc were all released well before that movie hit the theaters. I saw all of those clips and it didn't affect my enjoyment of the movie as a whole once I saw it opening night. When it comes right down to it we're talking about 3-4 minutes of clips of a 2.5 hour movie. You've barely seen anything.

I feel like a lot of stuff has been released but it doesn't feel like it's gotten to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 levels.

Speaking of T.V spots I hope that cringe enducing line about Ultron "throwing up in his mouth" doesn't appear in the film.

The early criticisms of "There are no stakes in this movie because we know the Infinity Gauntlet movies are coming, so we know everyone is going to be okay" are pretty funny to me.

I mean, it's a comic book movie. Of course the good guys are going to win. Spoiler Alert: The good guys are going to win in Infinity War: Part 2, as well. Oops, the movie is crap now.

Yeah, I hope that's cut. Would be nice. A lot of footage in previous trailers for past Marvel movies didn't make the cut, so…

I've noticed that films will have things in the trailers that don't make the final cut and even lines said differently. Sometimes I dislike the cut if the stuff seemed good to me but I deal with it of course.

So reviews are coming out next week I read?

HA! I love that line, conformation that Ultron has a bit of diva in him.

As for reviews, everything I've seen has been positive for the most part. Unless you want them to say it's the "greatest film ever" I don't see the panic. I think some critics were expecting the exact same dynamics as the first film and had to adjust their preconceptions. When someone says "it's not as fun" for example, it not necessarily a bad thing. When the dust settles I'd be surprised if it doesn't have excellent reviews overall. This rodeo tour of panic is par for the course for a lot of sequels.

It's almost like those complaining don't remember Marvel releasing like 8 clips showing whole sequences with the marketing campaign for TA (BW's chair interrogation, IM versus Thor forest fight, Fury's talk with Loki, Fury asking Thor about what he's prepared to do, Stark and Banner in the lab, Stark and Loki in Stark Tower, CA and Thor fighting back-to-back, and Banner coming to after falling from the Helicarrier.) All those clips didn't seem to dampen everyone's enjoyment back then so I don't see why them following the same pattern for AoU would have the opposite effect this time around.

The reviews so far all point towards everyone's expectations having initially been through the roof. Of course I am/was one of them, expecting this to be the greatest CBM ever... They're quick to point out it's a very good film but were left disappointed (still not all that hopeful, considering we've heard it countless times for other films). So many 'but's.

Hey, you can defend them all you want, I've given my reasons for severely disliking the tactics. You can address my points or not. My ultimate summation is it's gratuitous and unnecessary.

Expectations play a big role in the initial reactions and can often change with a second viewing once you know what to expect. For good or bad.

I look at it as this. I think I had more fun watching Captain America: The First Avenger, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier is definitely the better one to me. Star Wars is more fun, The Empire Strikes Back is better. Batman Begins is more fun, The Dark Knight is better. It being not as fun is fine by me because I would think one of the factors that would involve that would be the fresh nature of the first Avengers as opposed to this one. I care way more about those other qualities. I know I'm gonna have fun anyway!

Bingo. It's like the newness of something makes it fun and exciting but people don't seem to realize you can never recapture the same feeling you got from the first one because it'd suck to basically see the same movie twice. Sequels should always have that familiar remnant of fun that drew people in initially but at the same time grow to explore more themes and emotions than the last one.

Yeah I feel the same in most instances. 'Fun' is way too associated with MCU films-- not that it's a bad thing within context of the actual film, but critics and even some fans in general have set that as the bar or priority moving forward. In this case it's something everyone hopes will be recaptured. They'll call it bigger, dramatic and more whatever, but 'fun' is their 10.

Well if some critics and fans have to adjust their expectations from the Avengers to AoU, they better prepare themselves for CW.

Either way we'll be getting some Ooey Gooey Whedon goodies. Vision, SW with a touch of weird and wacky juice to top my order.

The reactions on this movie are some of the most oddball I've seen in a while. They're all like a laundry list of negative criticisms, followed up by "but it was still GREAT! 4/5!"
