Seems like the surprise of "Wow, they really made it work!" is gone. That's one huge thing that the first movie had going for it.
This one is being reviewed more like a regular movie it seems. If that makes sense.

I just want to see the overall score it gets now. I get people had certain problems with it.

I'm not getting that it's a bad movie, just that it's not at the same level as TA in terms of overall fluidity and narrative.

I always had the feeling that would happen and also that Whedon would get a bit too ambitious for many reviewers and fans.

Gotta love this opening paragraph:

Recently, there has been a shrill cultural panic at the thought of all the superhero movies due to be released in the next few years: Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War Part 1, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Infinity War Part 2, Batman vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice … the list goes on. But what’s the problem? For me, it’s no more of an issue than all the romcoms and horror the business is readying at the far end of the chute, and this exotic new strain of supers could well be stimulating the industry. And there’s certainly no problem if they’re as exuberant, funny, silly and crazily exhilarating as this new Avengers movie from writer-director Joss Whedon, which is a pure aspartame rush.

Excited to see this get good reviews. A1 doesn't hold up quite as strongly in repeat viewings as opposed to that initial viewing in theaters. I expect AoU will have more meat on it's bones.

The first movie was 90 minutes of building up 25 of New York battle. And it was euphoric to see this characters finally get together and fight together. It was a colorfull positive movie conceived to end on a big punch the air feeling. You got out wanting to be the Hulk. This one is darker, it may have even somebody dyiong, its a story filled with action, with a complex plot, personal losses, conflict... Avengers was very well reviewed, but many did so because it was like being a child again. This time, its adult times. And some were never gonna like it.

Not that others will dislike it for other reasons...

That Guardian review was fun reading. I think this one is definitely playing a lot more "comic book-y" than any of the others, and that is either going to work for you or not.

AOU was always meant to be different than the first one. Joss was never gonna copy what he did on the first story. So if thats part of the dissapointment, its kinda shallow. People have to judge this one on its own merits, not compare it to A1.

I want the complexities, I want the eccentricities, I want the darker stuff.

Agreed. It seems like the tonal shift from the first one, superhero fatigue and some possible story/editing hiccups by Whedon are going to be things we're going be keep hearing in all these reviews.

Anytime you get a sequel people will inevitably compare it to what came before it, however warranted it may be.

I've noticed that with a couple other reviewers as well. I have a feeling many fan reviews are going to be the same way. Just human nature to compare potentially similar situations.

Even on it's own merits there are flaws some of the reviewers had with the film though.

Forbes has always been rather lukewarm when it comes to comic book and sci-fi action movies so their reviews are real hit-or-miss.
