The Batman Reboot Casting Thread - Part 1

Yeah, because a new Batman film and the X-Men films will take place in the SAME EXACT UNIVERSE am I correct? Really, people have got to stop saying that if an actor has already played a character in a comic book movie, they shouldn't play another, even if it's not even in the same universe. Chris Evans did it, why can't anyone else?
To be fair, Chris Evans contract with FOX was done with by the time he signed with Marvel to play Captain America. Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool is and has been in development hell, making him available to WB for the part of Hal Jordan. If FOX were still planning an FF3 they probably could've kept him from auditioning for Captain America depending on what his contract stated. Also, if they had gotten started on Deadpool right off the rip, Ryan Reynolds probably would've been unavailable to WB for Green Lantern (so, ironically you can blame FOX for screwing up Hal Jordan. Thanks FOX :cmad: a**holes).

I wouldn't be surprised if FOX tries to wrap up exclusivity with certain properties. With an X-Men: First Class 2 already in the works with Fassbender set to reprise his role, they've probably already considered the possibility that other studios would be interested in having him play a superhero of some kind. Between the X-Men franchise and the new Prometheus you can tell FOX clearly sees Fassbender as [one of] their summer franchise guy. Guys like that can't just go do Batman for WB. Also, if I'm not mistake wasn't Shame a 20th Century FOX production? I'm 99% positive it was. It certainly seems to me like Fassbender probably had some exclusivity/multiple picture deals floating around in the XMFC contract. He probably can't even audition for a Batman right now, maybe not for a while.

Agreed. But it managed to get a lot of press. Even CNN was running with the story.

Reporters on red carpets were asking Bryan if Superman was gay and he was sweating bullets.

Were the media ever prejudice against Joel Shumacer?

Okay, does anyone have any evidence that a studio can write a contract that basically says "you are forbidden to do X, Y, and Z roles with anyone else"? Or more accurately, that anyone has done so anytime in the recent past?

Liam Cunningham as Alfred would be a great choice in a few years. He's only 51 right now, though.

Why haven't I thought of Goggins before now? That's bloody perfect!

I'd like for him to keep his crazy baby fuzz hair from Season Two of Justified as The Joker.

Only two men should be the next Batman, and age has nothing to do with it. An established, seasoned Batman is exactly what this franchise needs, so it's counterproductive to be picking all of these "hot unknowns".

The two men who absolutely HAVE to be Batman (it must be one or the other for me) are these gentlemen. Anyone else will be a disappointment for me. These guys are my only options.

Jon Hamm

Josh Brolin

I'd say they're both too old. By the time the reboot rolls out, assuming it is fast tracked, Hamm would be close to 45 and Brolin close to 50. You can't build a physically demanding superhero/action franchise with middle aged men.

I'd agree to Evans 1,000,000 %.

if its a hard reboot with an origins and all that, i think I would have already had my fair share of bats. it'd get to the point of being boring at that point.

i like evans as well. he's got a keaton sorta thing.

I remember when Pearce Brosnan was shooting the Thomas Crown Affair remake there was a fair bit of hoo-ha about the fact that there was a scene in which Crown wore a tux. Now Brosnan's 007 contract with EON expressly forbid him to appear a tux in any other movies, presumably to ensure the actor wouldnt be trading on the iconic 'Bond in a tux' look. After a bit of back and forth it was eventually decided that Brosnan could wear it as long as he didnt wear a tie/the ties was undone and he had his top buttons undone.

So, in short, I dont see why studios cant enforce such conditions - if it's in the contract and the actor knowingly signs on the dotted line.

I think Luke Evans would make a terrific Batman. I'm not petty in believing a gay actor shouldn't play Batman, but the media and tabloids will play on what that psychologist said years ago, that Batman and Robin were gay lovers and what Grant Morrison said in Playboy. It should not be a factor to stop Evans being Batman, but do you think it will cause big publicity problems?

Agreed

Considering Luke Evans is now trying to backtrack and conceal the fact that he's gay says it all. It could be a publicity problem.

Hollywood studios will see it as an issue for a project like this. His PR reps are trying to hide his sexual orientation. Check out this thread:

That ain't cool.

Anyhoo! I was watching Touch the other night and I immediately thought, Kiefer Sutherland would make a pretty good hardass Commissioner Gordon!

I'd like to think fanboys are less bigoted than the general public.

And a gay actor leading a billion dollar franchise would be groudbreaking.

As a Batman fan I'd be proud.

And lets be honest. The Schumacher movies were much gayer than getting a gay actor to play a serious version of Batman.

What would fanboy attitudes have to do with it? Its the response of the GA that would have studios worried.

So would WB take the risk of casting a gay actor as a character who is straight, but has had many jokes made about and branded gay by a lot of people?

doubt it. cause the media won't stop talking about it. i doubt he'd take the role if offered for that reason alone.

if mark strong was younger, and wasn't as good at sinestro as he was, i think he would have made a great batman. he's got the angular features, the voice and the height.
