Captain Marvel The Captain Marvel box office prediction thread

It's partially the culture of clicks and views. The inanity and irrationality probably increase the profitability, rather than the opposite. So there is so much incentive to double down.

The box office for movies like this aren't hurt by it, I don't think, except perhaps in very specific circumstances. They might even be helped by the touch of controversy, and people not wanting to align themselves with the most toxic side of the internet.

But it's a terrible tendency because of how some people can get caught up in it and lose touch with reality.

After this epic failure I wonder if stupid YouTubers and their minions will even attempt to launch a boycott for Episode IX. Do they really want to risk looking even dumber than they do now?

Decisions, decisions.

Of course they will. Just look at them trying to say the numbers are fake or Disney is buying the tickets themselves.

Navy men all know what it means when the green flag flies outside Casa del Guardabosque Rosado.

I've missed you.

Is that French? I thought you guys all spoke French.

I don't think they realize how dumb they actually are. To them, there's no way a movie starring a female superhero could be this successful. It's obvious it's an "SJW" conspiracy or something. Obviously everyone is lying about this movie being a success because reasons.

If the movie fail, they win, if the movie is a success, well they can just say everything is fabricated and they win.
If the movie succeeds that isn’t a genuine win though, even to them. It’s emergency face-saving comments and forced denial due to to the failure of something they likely genuinely thought was going to come to pass.

But is anyone besides their most delusional followers buying it? At least with Solo they could offer "proof" that their boycott worked by simply pointing at the movie's box office.

All they have now are conspiracy theories... maybe I'm overestimating their intelligence but there's no way that's enough for them. They needed a clear-cut win and they didn't get one.

They might know it on some level, at least for this movie, but they will do whatever generates the most traffic in the short term, which would likely not be a discussion of the film on its merits, for example, as anybody interested in that would have stopped following them long ago.

Ditto for the next movie.

It would nice if some of these sites and services were designed with a different type of feedback loop, but right now they seem to reward irrationality way too much. And not just with "likes" or whatever, but with money.

There is no "win" for them in this. The MCU is boycott-proof. With Solo, even hardcore SW fans didn't necessarily want that movie made, but today's audiences cannot get enough of the MCU. Some of these YouTubers have conceded already but others are still pushing ahead. My guess is if the movie falls short of $1B, those guys will count that as some sort of victory. Whatever.

Oh for sure. It's just exhausting that these people will never admit that they were wrong. But then again, what do you expect from them.

In the end, Disney is the biggest winner here. So much for "go woke go broke". :whatever:

I agree. This "complain culture" on YouTube is getting out of hand. I don't mind when people disagree with my takes in fact I listen to those more than the ones I agree with, but as long as its rational, well thought out criticism. But most of these guys are just spitting out "Mary Sue" and "SJW" each and every video and that's the extent of their analysis. I guess some people like that but it's the weakest form of critique, lazy as all hell to me.

Another aspect that bugs me is the tendency toward endless nitpicking.

I've never even watched the videos, but I know that they exist, partially because now one often encounters people online who seem to think that dredging up every minor inconsistency is the height of insightful criticism, or proof that the writing is terrible.

To the point that I often find myself trying to explain the difference between a nitpick and a more substantive point, but it can feel like an uphill battle.

What I love most about this is that more people are making fun of them now. Mocking them is almost as fun as Captain Marvel's box office run.

Have you noticed that a lot of Captain Marvel/Black Panther trolls are Star Wars fanboys? :ninja:.

Unfortunately, there was enough genuine dissatisfaction with The Last Jedi that some of the people participating in these online campaigns felt that they were able to get traction and have an impact.

I'm not sure if that's really true, or to what extent it's true. But it certainly felt like it to them.

It's not working with Marvel studios because the dynamic is not the same. People are excited about what is happening overall, and basically happy to see the universe include characters like Black Panther and Captain Marvel.

I'm not saying that the overall sentiment is completely homogeneous, but it's enough to prevent these online campaigns from having a negative impact, or even turning them into a positive as people decide to support the films to counter-act the trolling and bashing.

I'm just waiting for some math nerds to post some graphs and charts, that show comparisons, trends and multipliers. That's always my favorite part of these box office threads :)

Whatever the drop is, the haters will portray it as the worst drop ever.
In the next week or so, there are going to be a lot of videos saying that the film failed.
None of it is true of course.
A billion can't come fast enough.

Apparently some Comicsgaters are saying that James Gunn was rehired as damage control for Captain Marvel.

Marvel rehired the director of two movies that didn't make as much as Captain Marvel will make as damage control for Captain Marvel.

By all means, if they want to add another failed boycott to their resume, it's their prerogative.

I actually didn't see Solo in theaters just because I simply didn't have time to get it in with all that was going on last spring. I had a choice between it and Deadpool 2. I chose the Merc with a Mouth. Had it come out this past December instead, I would have gone.

You mean like those ridiculous graphs in the Last Jedi box office thread? :lmao:

What's that gif from?

Nah, point 1 really makes no sense considering there has never been a campaign against a film like this before in the MCU. I'd say it's the SW critics all over again with their Mary Sue complaints and general disagreement with the political message. Also I've seen a lot of the usual DC fans in the messages on YT and twitter feeling obviously salty that this could outdo WW nonsense masking it (rather obviously) as other things. Black Panther got some too, but it was more from closet racists and, again, the usual right-wing channels. Nothing like this though. Every other MCU film is highly rated in general and never really had this type of PR outside of production issues or the usual petty fan rivalries.

You want to make films where the star champions the political angle and politics in general on the press tour and this is what you get. She's got her right obviously, but she nor Marvel should be surprised. If they are then they really haven't been paying attention. We may think it's BS, but people are building careers on it.

I liked this film and liked their portrayal of danvers. I didn't like tfa/tlj and didn't like how they handled rey.
