I love going back and watching that Doomsday fight on YouTube. Death of Superman and Reign of Supermen had to be the best thing that era of animated movies put out.
I’ll one up you: Death of Superman is the best Superman film, animated or live action, ever made to date.

It has so much heart. It’s not a coincidence that the screenplay was written by Pete Tomasi.

Several years back, I wrote a probably-long-winded thesis somewhere on this website about how I think one of the main appeals of the MCU that was missing from the DCEU is that it's inviting. I'd want to visit that world if I could because it seems cool as hell. I think if you're gonna create a fictional universe, even one where aliens invade and buildings get destroyed in fights and people die en masse, it still has be a place the audience would want to visit. At least, when those horrible things aren't happening lol. I mean, we all have Star Wars/Star Trek planets we'd want to visit if we could, right? A BIG problem with the DCEU imo is that it just seemed like a pretty miserable place. It looked like ours, just...even more depressing somehow. I couldn't even tell the difference between that Metropolis and Gotham, it was all so same-y. That kind of place ain't gonna entice return visits from audiences.

This Metropolis already looks like a place I'd wanna go to ASAP.
Gunn's description of how he wants to do the world building with the cities is a great take and one of the only things he's said that has peaked my interest. They should all have fun, interesting, unique aesthetics and cultures. Makes me think of that great JLU episode where they finally go to Central City and it immediately felt distinct from Gotham or Metropolis.

Good call; I always forget it's Tomasi

The issue with any adaptation of Death of Superman is that the Death of Superman was a deeply stupid story in the first place. I cannot describe how uninterested I am in watching a story where Superman and a spiky pro-wrestler in lil shorts punch each other to death.

I find that movie to have my favorite Superman/Lois interactions outside of Hoechlin/Tulloch.

The action is just the trellis that the relationship vine grows on.

The aftermath was always the best part of the story, although I really do like the art that we got from the Supes/Doomsday slugfest.

Fun fact about me: World Without A Superman was the first Supes collection I ever got as a kid.

Ehhh…

I mean, it’s not great on it’s own, as it really is just a several-issue-long brawl, but it is a necessary prelude to stuff like Funeral for a Friend, Reign of the Supermen and his eventual Return. The issue with adaptations is that the story worked best when letting you sit with that loss for awhile, rather than jumping straight into bringing him back.

The more of these set pics I see, the more excited I get.

The episode “Hereafter” in JLU did the “Death of Superman” concept the best. You spend pretty much the entire first episode thinking that Superman has been killed by Toyman, and we get to see how various other characters deal with, grieve and process the loss of him being “gone”. By the end of the episode, you find out he’s not dead, but instead sent to the far, far future in a post apocalyptic wasteland where a reformed Vandal Savage befriends him and eventually helps him get back to his time.

One of the best instances where you kind of get to have your cake and eat it, too. It doesn’t feel cheap or like a copout, since, even though Superman didn’t actually die, how everyone felt about his “death” was real. Also, not a single punch thrown toward a spiky generic death monster in a third act, world-saving climax required to up the stakes, which is another plus. They throw out and get the unnecessary, drawn out, inevitable conclusion out of the way and just focus and meditate on the, well, “hereafter”.

I go back and forth, but I think I agree there. You have the emotional story with Lois, the great supporting cast (Bibbo, Cat, the Kents), the solid build-up to Doomsday and the ridic action that balances character moments. As far as hitting the right beats goes, I'm not sure if any of the live-actions beat it.

On location... practical sets?

Maybe next week? I think they're finishing at Mentor Headlands tomorrow.
