I wouldn't be so sure about that.

I always go back to that Variety story that indicated they were going to make Reeves batman part of the universe. The author never commented on the denial. It may have been premature but the trades rarely get it so wrong.

Plus at the beginning of 2023 superhero movies still were doing relatively well (except black Adam, lol). As the year went on, having two batman movies going simultaneously made less and less sense and then the flash came out and killed off the theory that batman = a billion.

My theory is this, they won't say much right now because they don't need too. If I was Reeves, I would want to see what this Superman movie is and how it turns out (along with how it's received by the general audience) before joining them up. If Superman does well and is accepted by the GA this would also help his batman. If it fails then no harm no foul, they go back to saying they were always separate. That's why I think the batman part II has been delayed a year. More time to figure this all out. Plus, Reeves batman movies don't even need to have any overt connections to the DCU or cameos. That doesn't mean you can't have Pattinsion show up in another characters movie.

Also, if this Superman movie actually hits the mark, they would likely know this well in advance of the release because the studios knows tracking pretty well. Could you imagine how things would go if there was a reference to Reeves' batman. It would bring a huge amount of goodwill to the DCU as a whole. The only people complaining would be the few people online that no one cares about saying Reeves' vision is compromised.

James himself kinda tipped his hand a bit that they did consider it for a moment when he said the reason they didn't do it was because it was Matt's choice, so there was some truth to that report and that was probably a conversation at some point (which is only reasonable) but it was outdated by the time Variety reported.

That being said the time for it to be done was literally before they even made the slate, in that November-December period after Gunn and Safran took over. Now it's too late and any way to do so would border on nonsensical. Would much rather the second part be scrapped if Matt steps down for whatever reason (which is the only way that it being folded into the DCU would even be in the cards now) than getting folded into the DCU. I do think this universe will be better served by a Batman specifically designed for it.

So much of the conception and worldbuilding of The Batman revolves around the fact it's a world just like ours but Batman is the one fantastical element. It'd be kind of a ridiculous pill to swallow to imagine that world in which the very existence of Batman himself was seen as such an anomaly it inspired a psychopath like the Riddler to emerge would be one in which superheroes have existed for such a long time and beings like the Creature Commandos are already running around. Even the technology Batman uses wouldn't make sense; Peacemaker can have his sci-fi helmet and Mr. Terrific his T-Spheres but Batman operates with technology that while somewhat high end in our world would be really lackluster in a universe like that. The way to do stuff like Superman in the Batverse was like Matt said—it'd have to be Superman appearing later on as yet another fantastical element later on that is seen as actively unusual. Not suddenly taking The Batman and going "In this universe the Green Lanterns, King Shark, Circe, Superman, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, etc exist and people like them have existed for a long time"

Maybe it's not completely impossible to do the retcon, but it'd be really really hard and I do think that it'd ultimately serve everyone better if both franchises just focus on telling the best stories possible rather than trying to make sense of that conundrum.

I will also note that, because of that very same reality of what the philosophy behind Reeves Batman is, I also don't exactly see what the appeal would be for James Gunn at this point to fold him into their universe? They already have their plans for what they want to do with Batman on the DCU over the course of a 10 year period, and while sure, even BaTB hasn't gone into production yet or whatever, it'd probably still be a pain in the ass to go back and re-write that whole part (which would probably reverbarate into having to change some of their other plans for other projects, like Teen Titans which might get completely scrapped in that case) while also having to come up with an arc and stories for Pattinson that justify him going from a character that's specifically made to be exceptional in a world very similar to our own but not on theirs due to how street-level his nature is, to suddenly one of the big icons of the JL that's up to par to fighting against big extraterrestrial threats, metahumans and crazy monsters. From Gunn's perspective I have to imagine building his own Batman that he can be tailor made to fit the DCU would be far, far more fun than trying to make fit a round peg through a square hole.

And also, for as much as one can argue that bringing Pattinson would be better for them because he's already recognizable, the GA already likes his take, etc, the truth of the matter is that none of that will matter for **** if the continuation for Pattinson's Batman is something that doesn't feel true to his character or hits on the marks that made him resonate on the first place, and it'd be very very hard to do so if you're suddenly changing the entire foundation for his character and worldbuilding of his movie.

It won’t get the national attention of the first picture but most people online like the way the suit looks in the newspaper articles. Corenswet looks like Henry in the face not going to lie but his body looks much better more like Superman to me. Cavill had the perfect Superman face.

We all said a conversation probably happened, that doesn't mean what Variety was implying it means though. Variety, and the people who bought into it, though Gunn wanted that and Reeves was standing in the way. Likely Gunn just wanted to know if there was a possible way to do it if needed and Reeves said no and it never got beyond that. It likely was not anything a trade should have considered printing a story about.

And yeah, you nail it on why it would make no sense. Short of it being another Earth it would just leave way too many questions unanswered and plot holes the size of Krypton. You could have maybe done it if Superman came first and there was mention of something that happened in Gotham that cuts them off but otherwise nothing matches, nothing lines up and it will be rejected whole cloth. It would take more effort to explain how it all works than is worth it. Better off just having a different Batman in the DCU and let Reeves do his thing with his own little universe.

You would basically destroy the entirety of what Reeves has in mind for his arc to make it happen. Then you shoehorn him in to fit the arc Gunn has in mind which will not only be awkward but tonally will just look bad. I am a big fan of yin and yang aspects of Superman and Batman (2 sides of a coin, light and dark...etc.) and Gotham and Metropolis should be quite distinguishable...but this would be ridiculous.
