The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

So, I think this might be my favourite comic book film in a long, long time.

I had some teary-eyed moments, in this film. Seeing Clark in his room with Ma and Pa Kent by his side - seeing the love of the three of them and the humble humility of Clark/Superman done justice so well, it felt so right. It's just seeing it realized was a gem of a moment, for me.

It's just...wholesome.

Seeing Superman be so heroic that he'll rescue a damn squirrel? Seeing him care so much and just want to be good because...just because? That he can be so corny and so likable? I wish that was more the case now, and seeing it manifested in an iconic, heroic aspirational figure feels rare in a time that embraces the anti-hero more and more.

Seeing him stand up and just be earnest and honest about who he is was just golden. Yes, it's simple - but the simplicity of goodness seems under attack these days. So it's kinda needed.

This film, whatever flaws you may feel it has, fundamentally gets Superman and these characters in a way I've never seen on film before.

And no matter how it does at the box office or how many people pretend that it's a bad film because of whatever agenda they have - this film exists. And we will always have it.

It can't be taken away now and I'm so grateful that it belongs to us, no matter what the future of the DCU is.

The third and final YT Critic I follow just released an apology video. He got so much hate for his initial negative review. Gave it a 1.5. He was mainly disappointed on how he went about reviewing it. The none cult like members are also brutal out there. Lawd.

Also, 11k guests?!

Someone get Ja RUle on the phone.

Where is Ja?

I see thanks. Do they at least acknowledge that Smallville is in Kansas or that Clark grew up in Kansas? Like actually say the name Kansas? I know it's silly to get nitpicky about this lol. But I take great pride that Superman is "from" Kansas haha.
In the opening crawl I’m pretty sure it says he was raised by Kansas farmers but that might be it. (barely a spoiler at all but better safe than sorry)

I think that was it, yeah.

Does anyone have the full thing? I really liked the way that was written with the "3" gimmick, but I only fully remember the last line.

"3 minutes ago, Superman lost a battle for the first time."

Some guy on Reddit on who either runs the Snydercut sub or is big on it talking about how its tanking and the RT is crashing ;)

So I was still processing my thoughts but I saw it Friday (IMAX) and again on Saturday (Ultra 4DX).

Well, it's hard to process my thoughts. I'm going to see it again in IMAX tomorrow with a better seat this time. I waited in line for popcorn thinking there was enough time while the previews played. Some Indian woman with her friends asked me if I wouldn't mind buying her popcorn so she wouldn't miss the movie. I was wearing a Superman shirt.

I got into the theater, and the movie was just starting with the DC logo. I missed the opening crawl but noticed it. It was so dark and I couldn't see a thing. I almost tripped over a sofa on the first row. I went up the stairs and started going through the row only to realize I went the opposite direction. I had to go back carefully trying not to step on anyone. Spilled some popcorn accidentally. It was so stressful. I made it by the time Superman whispered for Krypto. Sigh.

I'll be honest, I feel a little empty. It was 2 hours, too short. But I'll write my review later.

Yep I caught that. :)

Was a little disappointed there weren't more references sprinkled throughout. But the overall theme and message that emphasized Superman's human upbringing (which ties into Smallville, KS) more than made up for that.

So I was still satisfied in that regards.

That's how I feel too.

If a refreshing change of pace to have a film that actually embraces the character for who he is. Instead of trying to make into some other character.

This new Superman inspiring the wrong ppl tho.

:o

3 CENTURIES AGO, the first superpowered beings, known as METAHUMANS, appeared on Earth, ushering in a new era of GODS AND MONSTERS.

3 DECADES AGO, an extraterrestrial baby was sent in a spacecraft to Earth, and adopted by Kansas farmers.

3 YEARS AGO, the baby, now grown, announced himself as SUPERMAN, the most powerful metahuman of all.

3 WEEKS AGO, Superman stopped the country of BORAVIA from invading JARHANPUR, sparking controversy around the world.

3 HOURS AGO, a metahuman called the HAMMER OF BORAVIA attacked Superman in the city of METROPOLIS.

3 MINUTES AGO, Superman lost a battle for the first time.

Had to sleep on it but yeah, objective 8-9/10 (depending on if particular changes to the canon are able to gel with you or not) but personal 10/10 for me, exact same as with The Batman

While I can absolutely understand not being a fan of
the message from the Els and some have given fantastic reasonings for why it was a worse change, I feel like the comments made about Superman being an immigrant by Gunn and the rest of the cast is good evidence that he wasn't trying to downplay that element of Superman's backstory at all. For better or for worse. Me personally, I don't think the Els being *******s necessarily downplays Superman being an immigrant and that story. Superman is still an immigrant, he was still sent here from Krypton. Regardless of if the Els do it for altrustic or awful reasons, it happened. And as Pa Kent said in the movie, what's important is Clark's own choices. It's definitely not a choice I'd personally make, but it's one I can live with considering the emphasis it gives on Clark being good for good's sake, which is the most Superman thing there is.

Also lmao I cried like 5 times. Not hyperbole to say I've needed this goddamn movie for 13 years, to remind me and the rest of the world about what real punkrock is.

Good movie, bad movie, Superman is well and trully ****ing back. The world is better for it.

I quite enjoyed it but my main issue is the same I had (still have?) with the MCU.

Serious scenes being undermined or interrupted with a funny moment.

Eh I really don’t think this is a thing. Not a ton of moments come to mind where the comedy undermined the moment. I can think of one specific one where it did (at the end), but that’s it.

Three moments top of my head:
  1. Krypto mauling the **** out of Lex when he was having a serious talk with Supes.
  2. The Lois and Clark discussion at the apartment while the Justice Gang was fighting the space monster.
    • People kept giggling during an honest moment. Look, I like that it's a universe where monsters can attack a city at any moment and there are actual superheroes that can defend the city, but visually and audibly, I thought it grabbed the focus away from L&C.
  3. Lex suggesting capturing and killing a "special someone" (Clark) after popping Mali's head.
    • Some of the people in my audience laughed when he namedropped Clark. I reckon the tension would have been better kept without naming anyone.

the Lex one I certainly agree with, even if I enjoyed it. I didn’t have any issues with the Lois/Clark talk while the JG was fighting in the background. The scene was still centred on them.

I do disagree with the Clark one though. I don’t think it was meant as a laugh. Clark has been writing about Superman pretty consistently, so if Lex is targeting people he associates with then Clark makes perfect sense.
