DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Are there that many people who want a Mr Terrific movie? I've always seen him as one of those 'Oh yeah...he was there too' kinda characters.

Well I figure if Gunn can turn the Guardians into household names I wouldn’t doubt he can do the same for Mister Terrific.

Maybe, I guess.
I mean yeah we’ll see it’s just those earlier DCEU movies really hurt the DC name in film that’s not Batman or you get the rare movie like Aquaman. Peter Safran and James Gunn have a battle on their hands to redeem the DC brand for movie going audiences. I don’t know if an Mister Terrific film will work but I do trust James Gunn so we’ll see. I hope they can find success like Aquaman and with the quality of The Suicide Squad.

Just a weird choice.

Martian Manhunter. Hawkgirl. Zatanna. Atom Man. Hawkman. Those characters are out there.

Eh. I feel like people blame DCEU movies too much. Yeah of course bad movies can destroy goodwill but it didn't stop the people to go check Wonder Woman and Aquaman.

Wonder Woman was in BVS and Aquaman was in JL.

People would watch if it appeals to them and if WBD knows how to market movies.

I dont even think its the movies really.
I mean yeah, i could see Green Lantern having really cooled off people on that front, but other than that, i dont think its that.

Maybe its Superhero fatigue, maybe it is really that Disney has fully captured the market that people give DC a harder time.

Part of me wants to blame the "fandom" on it that feels just this much more negative over everything.
Like, outside of the whiny "M-She-U" etc incels over at Marvel, it seems Fans give the Marvel stuff far more leash than the DC fans do.

But maybe that has to do with the Marvel Formula of Filmmaking.
Maybe that Formula is the key to the success in terms of fans and General Audience.
Maybe that is what makes it easier going into a Marvel movie than into something like Black Adam or so.

Which i dont really see, because i love the unique styles and approaches to the DCEU.
The differences in movies...but maybe thats the problem.

Maybe Disney has the perfect storm here that makes it so very hard for WB to be able to gain ground consistent.

DC movies lack consistency and synergy.

Marvel Studios is clear for their shared universe and has 1 only bad reviewed film under their belt. The ones who aren't part of their shared universe mostly flopped - The New Mutants, Morbius, Dark PhoeniX.

On some level, but so were people like Ant-Man and Rocket Raccoon. Once you get past the top tier "Everyone already knows and loves them" characters, its less about "How popular is a character" and more "How good of material does this character present". Comparative popularity between B and C tier comic characters is pretty much irrelevant, because they are all still "people only comic readers know", and that populace is too small to matter.

So, is Mr Terrific good material for a movie adaptation? I don't know, he doesn't exactly have a deep well of his own mythos ( and back issues ) to draw from. OTOH, he's still a tech and gadgets hero when those tend to be easy to adapt, and he's connected to the JSA which provides a pretty good well of characters and stories to steal. He's certainly not the worst character to consider using. Just, don't count on him actually serving as a substitute for Batman, if the idea in the producers mind was "We can't use Batman, so. . ."

I'm all for introducing lesser known characters. Clearly Gunn is too, as he's found great success with Guardians, Peacemaker, etc.

But to have him calling the shots, bringing that philosophy to the priority of the DCU is worrisome (first posts being about Lobo and Mr Terrific), when we don't have the big guns done right yet.

IMO the DCU needs to feel like the DCU first, Superman and the JL up and running, for me to welcome the ancillary characters with open arms.

I honestly can't wait to see how will this end.

The WBD ceo is talking about Superman, Marvel's Bible and how there shouldn't be 4 Batmen... and yet James Gunn is already scraping the bottom of the barrel with Lobo and Mr. Terrific. Terrifying.

If he was teasing Jl, Martian Manhunter, Zatanna, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Atom... maybe I would have felt different.

Have we all considered the possibility that the Lobo and Mr. Terrific teases are literally for Peacemaker Season 2? It'd actually make a lot of sense.

I'll keep saying it.
The DCU under Gunn needs one overlapping story and villain throughout it's films.

Each film could have its own separate storyline, with its own separate villain, but the main villain's storyline and presence should be felt.

Really, only two known villains fit that bill, Darkseid or the Anti-monitor.

I feel Darkseid would have that been there done that feel to him with the public, even tho we hardly saw him.

Personally I'd be more excited for Lobo and Mr Terrific than the likes of Zatanna, the Atom, Hawkgirl and the Martian Manhunter. Different strokes and all that. I don't see it as scraping the bottom of the barrel in the slightest.

Other than superman, batman, the flash, and ww, I'd want to see these made into films.

Etrigan
Lobo
The question
Booster gold
MM
Hawkgirl
Dr Fate
Deadman
GL ( john Stewart )
Spectre
Zatanna
A Lex Luther origin film
Solomon Grundy
Adam strange
Vandal savage.

No idea how many films they have in mind. Some will be animated, and some will be on HBO max.

I haven't even heard Mr. Terrific until now....

Eh, be fair, just the fact that a character is obscure enough that visitors to a comic book internet forum might have not heard of them? Is at least a *little* bit of a bad sign for a movie project. Its not an insurmountable one, sure, but DC specifically has issues where they can barely manage to do good adaptations of their well known, well developed, and conceptually "easy" characters. Going for a third tier obscuro should inspire concerns that they are either flailing, or deliberately seeking an unknown because they hope people won't complain as much about faithfulness.

Gunn likes using obscure and lesser known characters. Personally I'm all for it. Only so many A-List heroes you can use and there are plenty of solid characters that could strike gold with the right adaptation.

Most people had never heard of Guardians Of The Galaxy or Blade or Ant-Man or Shang Chi and yet they all went on to have hit movies.

The character is versatile. You could use him in a solo film, a JSA movie that spins off their introduction in Black Adam or in the Terrifics, which was a Fantastic Four type knock off team DC had.

They had a not so great version of the character on Arrow for multiple seasons.

Michael Holt (Mr Terrific) is a black billionaire super genius polymath renaissance man with s super science balls :funny:. Holt is up their with Batman and Lex Luthor as one of the smartest men in the DC universe.

This would be my preference, because it's also a way to get out a live action version of Plastic Man, another favourite DC character of mine. Plus, if done well, it'd be a neat way to get the jump on the MCU and their version of the Fantastic Four they're trying to get off the ground.

I don't watch DC shows. So that Mr. Terrific was new to me.

I play the videogames though.

DC often try proof of concept for proposed live action characters in their animated movies, but the only DC animation I can think of that involved Mr Terrific is the 2019 movie Justice League vs the Fatal Five. And he's not exactly the star of that, it's a Jessica Cruz story.

I consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable about the DC Universe as a whole, and the first I had actually heard of Mr. Terrific was when Tom King wrote him into Strange Adventures. Such an odd choice, but I'll check it out if it looks good.

Unfortunately my first encounter with him was on Arrow, so…yeah lol.

Wasn't he in JLU? And some of the arrowverse stuff? I also feel like he was in the DC Lego game but I could be wrong on all accounts. Lol
