DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Might be late on this, but are these old James Gunn screenshots floating around now legit? Hard to tell these days.

If real, yikes. Nothing wrong with him having his own opinions on past DC films, but obviously just not a good look and not a good time for these to pop up.
They appear to be legit, and from 2012. I’m with ya though. While I don’t necessarily disagree with some of what he said, it’s just not a great look for the dude who’s now running the show at DC Films.

him crapping on Keaton’s Batman and Elfman’s work is borderline sacrilege

I’d post the screenshots here, but they contain no-no words (and we are, of course, a family friendly message board)

But yea, I have to imagine Gunn will address these ancient comments at some point if they continue to gain traction

Not sure if they're legit. He's allowed to have his option, but I've always got the impression that Gunn thinks superheroes are kinda dumb and are just silly.
I love Guardians 1 a lot but even that was different than a standard "superhero" type story

I doubt he'll address them though. There's no need

Gunn has pointed out that in recent years he used to post edgy posts for the sake of being edgy. So I don't take a post of his from 2012 to be controversial. Even if he actually doesn't like Batman '89, I imagine his actual opinion is a bit more tame than this. This is a nothing burger, just people trying to make a big deal out of nothing.

Oh god, the cults desperate attempts to knock gunn by literally going through his facebook account...going 11 years back, reached us here too?

Insane how pathetic some have become...utterly pathetic.
The Man changed so much in the last 10 years, wouldnt surprise me if he is far more favorable towards the Keaton movies.
Like, i disliked certain things too 10-12 years but by now like some of the stuff.
A lot of us are looking at Batman Forever far more favorable than when it came out etc.

Gunns not allowed to do that too according to some?
Absolutely pathetic and that we let ourself get dragged into the Cults nonsense, is super messed up.

This. And it's a post from 11 years ago. Get on with your lives people nothing to see here.

Regardless of what Gunn's opinions are, he's allowed to have them.

These artists and filmmakers are all going to view this material through different lenses , and alot of times, they aren't going to agree.

That comes with the territory when we're talking about a creative industry, like the film business.

As a fan, I'm not going to agree with the views of every filmmaker, screenwriter, comic book writer, and I'm not obligated to.

At the end of the day, their view is their view, and either you agree with it, or you don't .

Ultimately , I'm gonna judge Gunn on the quality of films, that DC Studios produces

If they're not good, or don't connect with audiences,, I'll be critical of the approach, regardless of his views on other iterations .

If he does well, I'll tip my hat to him.

Agreed. If he makes or is in charge of making great CBMs from here on out, I doubt there will be many complaints about what he said in the past. And if he had said all the right things and made something not great, it wouldn’t save him.

Personally, I don't really care, having an opinion isn't controversial, but when you're in the industry like he is & with the position within DC he now holds, to have made such publicly available scathing comments touching & ****ting on almost every element from writing, design, ,creative decisions, soundtrack, acting quality, even if they are from 10 years ago, it's not really a good look at all.

You know, lately I've been getting the urge to watch Blue Beetle again, which is a good thing if a movie makes me wanna rewatch it. I think we've just become so jaded by the glut of comic book movies that our expectations having, justifiably, become so high for these things. But Blue Beetle is the kind of movie I can picture turning on on a Friday night after a long week and just decompress to. Something light, fun and feel-good.

I get you. I had zero hype for the movie and I’ve seen it twice now. Annoyingly generic aspects of the movie aside, it’s a vibe.

(well, a watered down Spider-Verse vibe, but a vibe nonetheless)

Something about the dad character really resonated with me too, more so than usual in these movies

It's the same "edgy"-hipster stuff he has been doing for years. The only thing I think about it is that the guy is a bit childish. Ok if somebody would dig up something a person said in his teens or early 20s but Gunn was like 45 years old when he wrote that.

It's also funny how he complains about comic-book accuracy in his rants, yet he himself completely changes characters in his works, and then sticks them in a fairly comic book accurate costume.

Stuff like that can be more rewatchable. When Deadpool came out on cable I was rewatching every day for a good while as it was just a ton of fun without having to engage the brain for a heavy watch.

This is almost a dead genre: the “rewatchable film”. Films like Tombstone, Caddyshack, Fletch, and the original Top Gun all would be exemplary of this genre.

I’m not sure whether many of the modern superhero movies fit this genre these days. Movies like The Batman and Wakanda Forever were very good, but I’ve had absolutely no desire to experience them again. And in the case of The Batman, I’ve sat down to rewatch and haven’t ever made it all the way through a second viewing. I consider Logan to be one of the top 2-3 comic book movies ever made, and yet I have only watched it beginning to end maybe 3 or 4 times. However I have probably rewatched Tombstone or Young Guns 8 or more times just since Logan was released. And I’ve seen those movies dozens of times prior to that.

Maybe it’s just my tastes and other disagree, but I think that the art of the fun spectacle needs to be rejuvenated.

Yeah, at worst Gunn's style of posting would have royally irked me 10 years ago; provocative, aggressive and arrogant....but I would wager that most people, both celebrity and average Joe, would be cringing at what they used to post on the Internet a decade ago. I know I'm certainly cringing thinking about mine right now. :concern: This trend of trying to destroy people because of what they said on the Internet a decade ago has to stop (case by case and within reason of course).

That being said, given the amount of smack talk he threw there, his interpretation of Batman would want to be on point.

I think it's very much a taste thing. I don't think there even is a modern superhero movie that I really liked and haven't seen at least 5 times. I've only seen Joker and the Batman once, but I also don't really like them *that* much in the first place. I've rewatched BoP and WW84 and MoS a lot, and I've seen Wakanda Forever like 3 times just this month.
