DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

I see YouTuber’s are blaming Gunn for the failures of Black Adam, Shazam, Flash and Blue Beetle. How is it his fault those movies failed?

Some would argue that he announced the DCU reboot too soon and people didn't show up for these films as a result. I personally don't think it would have made much of a difference though.

And then there are all the Snyder fans who see Gunn as enemy number one and want to pin every failure on him.

YouTubers like who?

Plus, given Gunn's promotion predates Black Adam, I don't see how he'd factor in that. If people want to try and tie Gunn into the four films of 2023, have at it- even though it's a stretch- but Black Adam was before that.

It is kind of funny that Superman is the lowest grossing of the trinity. But as long as this new film can hit $700mill it'll be more successful than MoS who was more successful than SR

Absolutely. Although there will be those ready to call it a failure if it doesn't reach those.

Yeah .

There were some fans calling Batman Begins underwhelming ,in terms of it's box office performance, back in the day.

So , they'll always be fans who say , " It didn't do good enough".

For me , the test is whether The GA really enjoys, and embraces the film, and the new Clark and Lois.

That's ultimately the ball game.

High critic scores are good, but ultimately, the public decides whether these films are hits or not.

It'll be little comfort if SL does fine with critics, but audiences reject it ,or are " meh" , on it.

So they key is, striking the right cord with audiences, and giving them a reason to want to see what comes next.

I always found the BB as a failure stuff was hilarious at the time.

If the studio has any faith in Gunn he will have plenty of leeway. IF they don't...well...they will act like WB.

So, this is a bit of a pyrrhic victory but Blue Beetle only dropped 48% this weekend which is a good hold. It didnt suffer a catastophic 60-70+ drop and evaporate into dust like i think a lot of us assumed it would. Again, there's no going around it, the movie's still a big flop and nothing's gonna change that, its now a matter of how bad a flop will it be.

So lets take our wins where we can :)

Good article about Richard Newby about the state of the franchise and what Gunn’s new DCU needs to do to win audiences over.

Best quote from the entire article, which hits the nail on the head overall, is the closing segment;
That means offering consistency and not changing directions every time some critics and certain segments of fandom become blinded by nostalgia or throw tantrums when the story isn’t told the way they wanted it to be. That means decisiveness and letting filmmakers do more than simply adapt the familiar, but challenge what we think we want from these movies and what we think we know about these characters. The DCU has to do more than make fans believe a man can fly. It has to make them believe that this time, there’s a willingness to stay the course and see that flight to its destination. Only then will the DC film fans be found again.

This is one, of admittedly a lot, of reasons why DCEU failed to ever get off the ground. It got to a point were I think they were just listening to everything critics/fans were saying about their films & tried to please everyone.

I hope Gunn, DC & WB now realise that this isn't possible.

WB just needs to focus on singular standalone films plain and simple. Hire filmmakers with cool, unique takes and visions and let them run with it. And hey, if one person's take doesnt work, no big deal! You move on. In a cinematic universe, if one person screws up it spoils the whole broth. Let different chefs make their own dishes and then maybe, just maybe, down the line a few of the chefs can collaborate and make a buffet.

No idea if that analogy made a lick of sense lol

Snyder Bros and Grace to name a few. Very vocal group. Some don’t believe Legacy will even be made.

Not to disagree with you but I thought it was 10 million 60% drop. If it 48% I will dance in the streets.

Ok I am dancing. Wow!!!! The trades buried this movie Saturday morning. Good hold…..

Yup and again, i think the new goalpost here is to not be a catastrophic flop but only a meager flop. I would be even more optimistic if it didnt have such a disastrous international opening. But we still have a few more markets for it to open in.

It was an August movie, low budget, MAX special, that was basically for the Mexican American culture. It was never going to do well in Europe and Asia. The movie gets slack because it’s a DC property. It’s basically Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel but those went straight to Disney +.

Just got out of Blue Beetle, it's a Shame it's not performing better. It deserves to imo. The current climate isn't helping either. All that to say the kid nailed it, and I look forward to seeing him somewhere in the new continuity.

Good to hear you liked it. If the guy has done well hopefully he has a chance to be grandfathered in to the new universe.

Gunn has already confirmed he'll be there so hope hope that holds true.
Yeah, I heard him say that a while back but wasn’t sure how much stock to put into it so far ahead of when a real decision on it would need to be taken. Definitely hoping it is the case and Xolo gets a proper shot.

Pro-tip: no one should listen to Grace Randolph about anything. She was barely a fan of the DCEU to begin with, so I don't see why she'd be any fan of the DCU. I wouldn't call them any more vocal than those who always sing Gunn's praises.

The cool thing is the wider universe references and world building plots are broad enough that if you told me this was on the new DCU I wouldn't question it.

Might be late on this, but are these old James Gunn screenshots floating around now legit? Hard to tell these days.

If real, yikes. Nothing wrong with him having his own opinions on past DC films, but obviously just not a good look and not a good time for these to pop up.

Could see him organically pop up in Booster Gold. Xolo is also the only actor Gunn has said will go on into the DCU after their movie come out this year lol
