DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

I'm trying to imagine Sony having Batman, Paramount having Superman & Flash, Universal having Wonder Woman & Green Lantern. Leaving the rest of the DC universe with WB as like the Avengers, nobody wanted the rest.

They can't be right about DC Films being restricted to $35 million or less per project.

That's absolutely insane and would make the division a complete non-starter.

It isn't about being at $35 million, that's just the budgets that are able to be approved without Zaslovs approval

I wouldn't be surprised if Disney eventually ends up owning those characters.

That would probably trigger alot of fans, but I could see that happening far off into the future.

There would be pros and cons.

We’d likely lose things like Joker but they’d at least be able to create a successful cinematic universe.

They just more than doubled Joker's budget lol

Article reeks of nothing more than another WBD hit piece

I'd take an incoherent mess that is the DCEU, if it also means films like Joker, The Batman and The Dark Knight Trilogy, over a more functional but extremely formulaic shared universe like the MCU, any given day. Also I'd take anything over film and/or TV monopolising by one studio. I realise the frustration regarding the universe most feel, I share the sentiment to some extent, but rooting for something that in the long term is even worse and hurts the industry isn't the answer. I thought Zaslav taking over from the previous regime couldn't have possibly be any worse, and yet here we are. Let's not continue that downward spiral.

It may be a hit piece, but Zaslav and WBD is sure offering them alot of material to work with, and making themselves easy targets.

This conversation is ridiculous.

We know that the budget isn't limited to $35 million because (a) Zaslav just cancelled Batgirl for being too cheap looking, (b) Zaslav has stated his intent to spend big on DC properties to create spectacle, (c) WBD is spending million on reshoots for The Flash and Aquaman and (d) WBD has already stated given the greenlight to DC projects with big budgets.

They are not going to sell off their characters either. If the intention is to sell the studio, they will sell it and all of the rights it owns. They won't want to sell a husk of a studio.

If they're not intending to sell the studio, why would they shoot themselves in the foot like that?

While I certainly don't take anything Zaslov statements as gospel, including his "10 year plan " stuff, if they sell it (which I think they will) they'll sell it with all the rights they own.

I really admire what the MCU has accomplished but Phase IV is actually pretty bad. It’s mostly nonsense, they’re on autopilot.

I’m certain there will be lots of good films and shows in the future but lately it’s been ****ing dire. Secret Wars and DP3 are very promising though.

But I would probably sacrifice what we have at DC for what Marvel has done. Even if it means no Joker or The Batman.

Just keep Batman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman... The others are expendable. :o

WBD was $54B in debt partially due to the merger, I feel Batgirl was a casualty of not being farther along that a tax write off would be more preferable than additional money to spend on finishing and promoting it. Zaslav saved them $3B with his cost cutting measures.

If they're selling, Zaslav will want a DC Universe ready

I think there’s probably an element of truth to that. “Irredeemable” may mean “not theatre worthy and therefore unable to spin of a profit”.

While I suppose it makes sense to have some threshold where you don't actually need to go to the CEO. . . that still seems awfully low. Almost no theatrical movie is going to be that low, it amounts to a requirement that *all* DC movies get CEO approval. Might as well just make that the actual rule.

WBD is in the red and on a tight budget as is so i dont see that changing until they are in the green again with a team that Zaslov feels that he can trust. But that's also part of the reason why they likely cant fill the DC role. Its filled with red flags and restrictive as hell

Isn't it black?

$35 million stuff is nonsense. Streaming platforms and premium cable drops more money than that on their high end shows.

I could see Apple or Amazon buying the rights or licensing for DC. Bezos has shown he isn't afraid to spend a fortune on one of his favourite nerd properties when he feels like it.

They aren't capping it. Its just what can be easily approved without executive approval

Yeah, I could totally see that as well.

I think fans who are hoping and believing in Zaslov's "ten year plan " talk are in for a disappointment.

I think The DC properties are gonna belong to someone else, probably sooner than later.
I think it's gonna be up to them to determine the long term future of DC on film as opposed to WBD.

Ok but what if they sell different characters to different companies? That would suck imo.

Then the DC Catalog would be where the Marvel catalog was when in the 90s, i.e. the properties would be spread out across different studios , making big scale live action crossovers chances nill.

That said, I think any studio which would want certain DC characters ,would likely want the whole thing as well .

There's so much potential profit from those IPs , so they wouldn't just take Batman for example and not want to take WW, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Superman, Arrow etc, and all of their spin offs.

In that sense, they wouldn't be in the position Marvel was in the 90s when CBM weren't considered to have the potential of being cash cows they are today.

All that is to say , I think whoever gets the catalog is gonna want it all , as opposed to cherry picking.

Or WB would keep Batman and just constantly revolve movies/stories about him, Bat Family and the Villains. This would be a few steps up from Sony with Spider-Man because you'd actually have more than just 2.
