DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Eh, I also feel like certain folks are jumping the gunn. No pun intended. Women are so easily and often labeled ''difficult', especially in hollywood studio system. I have no doubt she will let her side of the story be known.
Yep. The memes are super gross, WW84 may not have had the warmest reception but so many people are getting up in arms and mocking her for actions that we applaud male directors for. We all think its awesome that Matt Reeves walked away from The Batman for a minute 'til he got what he wanted and personally Jenkins patronizingly responding with a wikipedia article about character arcs and then rage quitting feels like an admirable act of sticking to her guns.

The fixation on her "obsession" with Steve Trevor and Chris Pine is also... something. Of course that was always going to be a focus? It's maybe the best romance in a superhero movie apart from Reeve and Kidder and the primary reason that first movie works so well? I wonder why people are so up in arms about the concept of a woman director being focused on telling a love story in her movie!

It seemed to me that Patty's love story had a definitive ending in the 2017 movie (Steve Trevor sacrifices his life), and then she brought it back in WW84 in a very uncomfortable way. Maybe its for the best that she walked away from the table.

I would like to see Raven be portrayed by an Indian actress. I think it falls more in line with her original appearance.

Man, I love reading stuff like this.

Probably, I mean they pretty much gave him Kyle's origin for Beware My Power! :funny:
It’s always been more than obvious that John is simply not an interesting character. His character is basically just “army guy”. No wonder they had to give him Kyle’s backstory. John has virtually no stories worth telling. Mosaic is trash. The only way to make him interesting is to give him other character’s motivations, storylines, and villains. The core of the Green Lantern franchise and all the interesting stories revolve around Hal and Kyle.

That being said, I’m ok with him basically replacing Kyle. Beware my Power worked for me because he stole the origin of a more interesting character. I had been saying this for years that John needed some major changes to actually work as a lead character.

He works in Justice League because he’s not a lead character.

Petty Jenkins is a whole vibe.

The more I think about it, the more I'm on team #hardreboot. Fold Pattinson into the DCU, let Reeves do his thing in the solo movies.... sounds great to me. I think it's easier to explain a total reset than it is to try and clean up an already messy set of stories. I would have liked to have seen WW and Aquaman get their trilogies wrapped up, but if those movies have to be sacrificed for a unified DCU vision moving forward then that's something I can get on board with.

I just don't like how Gunn changes his characters so much. It works with the lesser known ones, but we shall see how it does with the big 3. Well we might get Nathan Fillion as the live action Green Lantern, before Gunn kills him of course.

Assuming things go smoothly, and this iteration of the DCEU has an end point., I'm gonna have to wait and see Gunn's actual film results as head of DC Studios, before I can praise him ,and say I agree with his vision.

In other words, I have to see Gunn and Saffron's plan in effect before I can make a judgement about whether I like it or not.

At this point, it's way too premature for me to place 100% of faith in films that haven't been made, results I haven't seen, or visions which haven't be articulated yet.

Yep. The incoming roster of actors is another concern. Miscast roles can ruin the film experience and then some. Fingers crossed.

TBF casting is rarely a concern for DC films, and when it has been a big one it's been within the DCEU (Luthor, Cheetah, Ares, Flash, Joker, Enchantress, etc).

Aside from Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern, I struggle to think of a miscast role outside of the DCEU since Catwoman in 2004.

I've been saying this for a while now, stop producing movies for the DCEU.

Expand Battisonverse where in that universe there is the the super hero roster we know and love - they don't have to interact - each movie is strictly stand alone unless they do a team up movie, but if you chose not to watch those, it wouldn't effect anything.
His rogue gallery will feature the more fantastical elements so the good guys can too.

Yup, I'm aware of the realism involved, but hey, a good movie is a good movie.

I was speaking to my own experience with new castings given the subjective context of Frodo's post.

It's also interesting to see how they move forward all with one universe, across all platforms... that seems very ambitious to me.

Yup. Another miscast like JE as Lex will kill what little excitement I have left.
Most of us, but not all obviously, shouted protests from the rooftops over his being cast as Lex.
Sadly, we were right. Worst casting ever!!

Another thing they should fix, whether they're Superman or Batman villains, DON'T KILL THEM AS SOON AS YOU INTRODUCE THEM! Two-Face in TDK, Lex Luthor in Titans...

Agreed. Killing Steve Trevor in WW was idiotic.
I honestly think that at the time, they had no idea how popular the film and characters would be.
But still, they should always plan on a sequel happening and not kill off main characters in the first one.

Lots of things have to go right when rebooting one property , let alone an entire universe of properties.

It's not as easy as the discourse in fandom over the past week, would lead one to believe.

It's going to be a massive challenge and undertaking to make sure everything is done right, done well, and is excepted by the GA.

It can be done , but it's not gonna be easy.

Not to say they can't do solo films, but I strongly feel like a viable path forward is to focus on ensemble films. You get more bang for your buck, and Lord knows DC has no shortage of teams.

Bat Family
Checkmate
Green Lantern Corps
Justice League
Justice League Dark
Justice Society
Metal Men
New Gods
Outsiders
Secret Six
Suicide Squad
Teen Titans

The reboots have been a way to (theoretically) update the characters and get rid of all the baggage that comes with decades of continuity. But DC has never managed to do them well. Usually they retain some stuff while changing a bunch of other stuff and it gets messier and messier with every reboot. So in 1985 Crisis on Infinite Earths rebooted the DC Universe. Then Infinite Crisis (2005) debooted the universe. Then Flashpoint (2011) rebooted the universe yet again only for it to be debooted by Doomsday Clock (2017)...again.

I find it ironic that Marvel's answer to this same problem has been consistently more successful, despite that answer being "rolling backstory timeline and otherwise just don't think about it too hard".
