DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

I'm not too upset about this. McFarlane didn't do a great job with the DC Multiverse line. I don't like how they did the groin and crotch pieces. It would make the area look like the characters were wearing diapers if they didn't have a belt on of some sort. Sometimes characters would have goofy paint apps, or they would have like gun holding hands when they didn't have guns.

I really wanted Superman Blue from the JLA/Plastic Man wave. Couldn't find it anywhere.

I'm no expert on action figures, but is Mattel actually better than McFarlane Toys or Spin Master?

McFarlane Toys, depends on your opinion. Spin Masters? Most definitely.

Mattel had the DC figure license for quite a while. I want to say like 2002-2003 until like 2019-ish? I think the DC Universe line was pretty good for the most part. We got a good variety of characters and sculpts by the Four Horsemen. There were definite QC issues from time to time.

I think after a while McFarlane started making some good figures for DC Multiverse products, but there were a few problems. Characters couldn't come with guns. IE Grifter, Peacemaker, and Sgt. Rock come with goofy accessories or no guns when guns are part of their gimmicks.

I'm personally not a fan of the crotch pieces for McFarlane's DC Multiverse line. They have these like flexible plastic crotch pieces rather than traditional t-joints or ball-jointed hips to hide the joint articulation. What I don't like about that is sometimes it looks like characters have these like diaper pieces around their waists that look goofy. So unless a character is wearing like a utility belt it just looks awkward.

Also, even though they can't pack the characters with guns, McFarlane's figures are still packed with swappable hands that are basically posed for holding a gun. Like Animal Man comes with a gun holding swappable hand that makes no sense.

Sometimes I think McFarlane makes questionable decisions for certain waves. Like the 1990s Grant Morrison Justice League wave. Superman Blue was almost impossible to find. Justice League Batman I think received a poor head sculpt. The head sculpt on Batman/Spawn two-pack looked ridiculous.

It took a while but eventually McFarlane released a new Spawn/Batman crossover figure that comes with a much more accurate headsculpt to the 1996 comic crossover.

Honestly, I'm not upset about Mattel getting the license back, and I'm curious to see what they do with it.

Jeff Sneider says major rumors are sweeping through Hollywood about big changes happening behind the scenes at WBD. Sounds like De Luca and Abdy are getting fired.

Haven't De Luca and Abdy been there before the Discovery merger?

Nope. They were with Amazon MGM Studios before. The WBD merger closed in April 2022. They made a deal to join Warner Bros. Pictures in June 2022.

In other words, they were David Zaslav's picks.

He'd probably just pull double duty. We're in the era of "do more for LESS" so....make him earn those coins though its pretty useless to do so without even seeing how well DCU does. Safran isnt exactly known for his great DC track record

Assuming that's true, curious what the odds are that Safran could do both? Or would DC Studios need a new co-head. Not that we've seen or head much from Safran since his new role, aside from the occasional quote here and there. It's mostly been Gunn doing the talking.

I dunno. I feel that WB is a bigger studio than 20th Century Fox to just go the way of being swallowed up. The only way big studios like WB or Disney get acquired is if they're bought by ISPs like Apple or Amazon, which I wouldn't rule out happening at some point.

That said, while yes, Superman is a big deal, Warners does have other films coming out. The burden shouldn't be on Superman alone. Look at that Minecraft movie. Seems like WB is pushing hard on that too, especially since tickets are already on sale!

Gunn has said before that he wouldn’t have taken the job if he didn’t have someone like Safran to shoulder half the load, and it seems to me that goes away if he’s responsible for the company’s entire film operation.

I’ll buy that Zaslav has considered it. But maybe he ought to find an extremely reflective surface and fire whoever he sees staring back at him instead. :o

Disney bought Fox for $71 billion, which was more than initially intended due to Comcast showing interest late in the game and driving up the price. The initial deal was somewhere in the 50's billion range.

The studios are struggling and have fallen off since the pandemic so I wouldn't be surprised by further mergers and/or acquisitions amongst studios at some point.

Currently the two biggest legacy studios are Disney at $180 billion and Universal (really the Comcast parent value) at $140 billion. Warner Brothers Discovery (WBD) is currently valued at $26 billion since the AT&T spinoff. It's vulnerable for takeover by a bigger studio if desired (and the DOJ has the appitete for allowing more) and certainly by a big tech company.

Zazlov has wanted to merge either Comcast for a while...

I want nothing more than to watch this studio fail and burn. Disgusting people, disgusting company.
