The Election Night Thread - Part 2

It's not feasible at all. Economic growth in developed countries is underpinned by R&D, so unless he's going to try and encourage the US automotive industry into a resurrection the other conventional manufacturing industries will simply not compete with Chinese labor pricing.

That's unfortunate...that it makes you feel that way. I hate seeing everyone so divided right now.

Yeah, the fact that Obama and Trump could sit down and have a civilized conversation is what made me feel good. I'm not a Trump fan (not many here are), but we should celebrate any soundbite or clip where he acts like a normal human being.

you say that as if this is a new condition...

but you don't understand..my issues are with trump personally. As a black person trump himself being president especially after Obama is an affront to me on a personal level. And heres why...read below.

So tangential question, does Trump's election embolden the neo-Nazis, or does it placate them because they have their proxy in the White House?

it emboldens them because his election validates everything they believe.

when trump harassed Obama about his birth certificate to the point where he felt the need to show it again to put the stupid issue to rest...all I saw was an old white man saying the black man in the office of the presidency wasn't legitimate until HE said he was. Only to see 6 or 7 years later that same old white man stepping into the office with the ability and mandate to rollback and erase any and all accomplishments of that black man...

yeah it emboldens them.

I posted this in the trump thread but it applies here to..

Here's the problem..congress controls the purse and who controls congress?? THE ESTABLISHMENT...trumps going to get the rude awakening that Obama supporters got in 2009..that the president doesn't have that much leverage or control especially in domestic matters. This is why the DOW shot back up because they know trumps NOT going to start a trade war nor is he going to tear down wall street.

Heres the thing..I don't get the calculation of the rustbelt voters...they want someone who is supposed to be a middle finger to the system (understandable) so they install a born on third base plutocrat who IS the establishment. And what exactly is supposed to happen here? For ALL of hillary's faults (and she has many) trump has JUST AS MANY. In fact in a number of ways he's WORSE because he is a captain of industry who himself shipped jobs overseas and has history of NOT paying his contractors and bankruptcies.

I don't see how this person blows up the system or makes significant change. He's just an old white man in a long list of old white men who have led this country so how does that make a america great again??

He sold himself as anti-Establishment. Hillary did not. That's the difference.

I'm concerned, I'm not fearful. I will wait and see what this actually looks like. I don't have a problem with rolling back some regulations. Everybody is freaking out about the Paris Accords but even if he scraps Obama's Clean Power Plant Plan market forces have already brought down carbon emissions because gas is so affordable and abundant right now.

We are not at a point were we can "wait and see" anymore. That's what we've done for the last 16 years.

Some things we can....I do think everyone needs to sit down, take a breath. TURN OFF THE TV, move away from the news...EVERYWHERE phone, internet, etc.....and just take a breath.

Agreed.

I know we're all on the ****-Trump train, but at this point I'm just gonna give him a chance to show us what kind of President he is going to be. Whiling away red-faced isn't going to do anyone any favors. He won, it's reality, deal with it, hope for the best.

Kelly, I'm sorry, but the full weight of what is about to happen hit me this morning. I agree with you on the fact we can wait and see on most issues people are freaking out about but Trump ran on the platform of getting rid of the EPA. His 100-day plan specifically states he will "unleash" the fossil fuel industry including "clean coal" (quite the oxymoron). The GOP has been in the pocket of big oil as far back as Big Oil has been a thing and they now have a rubber stamp to do anything they want and what they want is to deregulate everything so they can maximize their profits. They do not have the people of this country or the future of our planet's best interest in mind. Despite Obama's lackluster approach to protecting the environment science keeps repeatedly warning us that we are almost at the point of no return. When Trump and the GOP fulfill these promises it's game over.

But hey, a bunch of states including mine made it legal to smoke bud so I guess I should just go get stoned out of my mind and watch the world burn since there is nothing any of us can do to stop it.

Everything that he wants to do has a process to it....instead of freaking out, let the process work, and if it doesn't work to the benefit of the people, then you can freak out a little, but at the least let the process work.

I agree with Kelly, people need to stay vigilant but let it play out. Going into a state of hysteria before any hysteria-worthy events have taken place is what the radical racists are regressive leftists are out there doing, no need to contribute to the climate of irrationality.

Michael Moore on Morning Joe this morning was pretty great. Moore gets why Trump won.

2-4 years of unchecked and deregulated Big Oil is something that will take decades to fix if it's even possible. The GOP has denied and fought climate change every step of the way and I'm just supposed to sit back and think that now when they have the Presidency, Senate, and Congress they're going to suddenly change their minds and do the right thing?

It definitely helps. I even skipped the Sam Bee special on Wed night.

So, in the final analysis, Clinton and her campaign goofed up? Since the stats seem to bear out that she ceded votes rather than Trump gaining them. Also, the left-leaning media , new and old.

Our mantra going forward, in response to election night, should be Michelle Obama's "When they go low, we go high," quote. March against what you don't agree with - but don't start rioting. You're going low when you resort to that.

Don't jump to conclusions about the vote yet, it's only 93% counted. By my estimates Hillary will probably finish anywhere from 65-66M votes which would put her slightly under Obama's 66.5M in 2012

unfortunately the popular vote doesn't matter.

unfortunately the popular vote doesn't matter.

The more she can drive up the wedge between herself and Trump, the bigger a rally the base issue it can be used in future elections. If my assumption is right that most of these missing votes are in heavy urban areas, I expect Clinton to get 2M+ votes over Trump when all is said and done

This is another great article from a Gawker writer who grew up in rural NC about the viewpoints of those folks, and how economic desperation changes your priorities and perspective, and hits on some of the points I was getting at yesterday about how much a factor something like racism really plays into the vote.

It's about a 10 minute read. Well worth it.

This election has prompted me to look into the electoral college and what it does...if I'm reading right, the EC is there to ensure that each voter's voice carries the same weight in the election? I'd seen where relying on popular vote alone would mean that the city votes would effectively decide the election.

Is that how it works? I will admit our system seems complicated...but the silver lining of this is that the 2020 election should be an ace in the hole for the Libertarians or Democrats. We just gotta make it through naranja diablo.

Well, the fact that this has only happened 4 times, I think that the Electoral College is not that bad of a deal.....BUT with population shifts, and population migration moving South with the jobs, every 10 years those Northeastern states will be losing Representatives and Electoral votes, while the South will be gaining...if Texas continues it track of moving to a toss up state along with gaining electoral votes, I have a feeling that what is usually a pretty easy, even boring Presidential Election in Texas is going to turn into a crazy circus....good times coming!
