The Gaming Lounge: Beyond - Part 5

There are dozens to hundreds of video games released this gen (and beyond). I cant keep up with all of them. Im sure there are plenty that some might think should be well known whose details you arent completely aware of either

At the time Darksiders came out, there was a lot of attention to it because it came out the same day as Bayonetta, plus Dante's Inferno and God of War III were coming out shortly so there were always comparisons between the 4 games being made.

I mentioned this in the Splinter Cell:Blacklist thread, but IGN had a video up about what the new release date could mean in regards to the next gen systems, since August 20th is the latest release date we've gotten for any game so far this year.

Personally, I don't think the new consoles will be released this year, although I do think they will be revealed. But it is interesting to see that we haven't heard much about any other games that are scheduled to be released in the second half of this year. Could that mean that developers are already getting things ready for the next gen?

yeah and like the other 2 newer, less popular games, the only comparisons I read and experienced myself playing them was to God of War (well DMC as well for Bayonetta). All 3 screamed God of War from the screenshots and footage released as well as the demos which were put out. Its no wonder why I assumed the final game would play out like a GoW experience

That's absolutely what it means.

I search for next gen news about 5 times a day lol. There are about 200 signs of impending announcement before E3, extended coverage during E3 and release soon after. I think at least one of them will release this year if not both & at the latest early 2014. I'd be very surprised if XBox isn't out before Xmas & probably even Thanksgiving this year, unless it's due to a supply side problem. Sony shouldn't wait really..the headstart was too much of an advantage last time.

I hope the rumor of a March announcement for each console is true.

I don't remember how the release was for the 360 or PS3, but I would imagine having a release date near the holidays would be ideal, and a lot of the talk surround Splinter Cell's new date is about how soon/late would Ubisoft be willing to release it, since there's a good chance that they know when the the new consoles will be released. They would not want to basically leave Splinter Cell out to die by releasing it a month or two before the release of something better.

Consoles almost always launch during the holidays.

I'm sure they'll both be roughly the same power again. We'll still have the same arguments over which port of a game looks better like earlier in this gen. At the least having them be similar hardware makes it easier for the developers. I doubt either ones going to be far more powerful than the other. The key issue will probably be if Sony's new operating system is up to snuff, or if it hinders development again.

I think the big question right now is if third parties will support the Wii-U better than the Wii. The Wii was lacking in power, and third parties seemed to put out half assed efforts. The Wii-U is capable of current gen graphics, so third party ports of games that have already been released on the PS360 make perfect sense. What happens when the jump to PS4, and 720 happen though? Will they make a watered down version for the Wii-U, or continue the trend of just making the big games for Playstation, and Xbox, while doing other titles for the Wii-U.

I hope there will be less performances issues between games on the new xbox and ps3. Look at Bethesda's blunder with the PS3's version of Skryim for reference.

The wii U will probably get almost everything while the 360 & PS3 are still active & once they die off the wii-U multiplatform support probably will too.

Or just about every Unreal based game, especially early on.

One thing I am happy about is that, if true, the rumors are painting a good sign in the functionality department. First it's that PS4 will be able to browse other applications (like the Playstation store) while a game is running. Then it's that the operating system will have a dedicated 1GB of RAM. So I'm thinking like a PC's capability of alt+tabbing to look on the web browser while playing a game.

Maybe this also means it will have the other features we've been asking for. As well as better support for them. Like the PS3 can play music from your HD in game (see Warhawk), but no one supports it. I'm guessing adding more processes in games that already have trouble, like Skyrim, is a no go. 1GB should better handle that.

I'm also happy with the 4GB number in general as that's what I wanted anyway. 8GB in the 720 could be for operating system support (the article said 3GB for it alone), and Kinect 2 support. I remember reading Kinect functionality was gimped due to cutting back on RAM. So maybe an integrated Kinect (or atleast packaged in all versions) feeding off the 720's power requires more RAM?

These rumors are obviously not confirmed, but I'm curious about the graphics card speculation. The HD rumors are setting around 500GB standard off the bat. Though 1 TB would be preferred.

I'd be cool if the new Xbox launched in November. That's a big change for me...I was hoping Next Gen was a year off yet...However, I think it's time now. I just want to see what they'll offer us.

362 at launch...PS4 will wait at least a year. I've yet to put solid time into a Sony product since the PS2.

I personally don't feel like we really "need" next gen consoles at this particular moment in time, especially since there are so many great looking and great playing games that are still coming out. But I hope that when we do get new consoles, that the jump in technology and capacity is great, meaning that its not the case of the Wii and WiiU, where it only does a little bit more than its predecessors.

I'm not a tech expert so I don't really know what to look for in specs generally, but I just hope we get something that makes gaming fun, while reducing things like long load times that make the experience a bit more frustrating.

There's quite a leap going from Wii to Wii-U. It wasnt a minimal jump. I think what might cloud your perception is that the WiiU isnt much of a jump from the 360/PS3 bc it isnt, but looking at its predecessor, theres quite a difference in tech and what its capable of. Its really like the difference between PS2 and PS3

True. I haven't had any hands-on experience with the WiiU, but from all of the impressions that I've gotten, it's basically an HD version of the Wii that is capable of playing games that we've already been playing for a while now. If anything, I'd say the biggest leap comes from the tablet. Like I said, I don't know much about specs, but that's basically all of the difference that I've seen from the outside.

But in terms of the technology that's already been available, the WiiU is years behind. Now, I'm sure some PC gamer is going to say that PC games have been doing more than the consoles have for years, but my main point is that if all we're getting is better graphics, then I'm not sure we really need new consoles.

Final Fantasy fans still have the old games they love so much. Really not a reason to complain. That's how I try to look at it any way. Think that's why I can tolerate titles like Resident Evil 5 or 6. Ill always have the originals.
