Report: Xbox 720 Will Require Online Connection, Pre-Owned Games Blocked

The possibility of this has been mentioned before but guess this is more weight to those rumours. Seems like both PS4 & 720 might be going down this route of blocking pre-owned gaems at least. Would only really work if they both did it.
IMO, I think a constant online connection will kill both companie's next console if they go that route. I cant imagine playing either bc I know my internet connection isnt always stable. Would suck to be in the middle of a single player game and have it cut out and lose my progress bc my internet is acting up again. How much of a nuisance would that be?

Agreed that this would be a huge problem for many and a complete wipeout for those who don't have permanent access. That said I'm sure Sony & Microsoft have some degree of awareness of this likelihood and will only be thinking of taking this route if there is a viable solution to the expected problems. Eg when you get your connection back after a drop, like a pc recovery it might save your last connected status to the cloud and you can resume your game from where you left off. Just thinking out loud as without a solution it probably would be a console killer.

You only have to look at the outrage for other games that have done that to see it's a horrible idea. I have a good connection, but a few days after I bought that Final Fight combo off of PSN (which requires always online), PSN went down, and I couldn't play the game I purchased. Personally, I think if the Nextbox, or PS4 does that it's console suicide. They'd basically be cutting off anyone without internet, for whatever reason. Also anyone with a shoddy connection would think twice before buying, or risk lots of lost time and data. That said, I'm with Iceman, Sony and MS can't be that dense, and oblivious to rage against always connected single player.

What I could see with this, IF Microsoft does do this, is make an XBL subscription mandatory. Then just tie in an extra fee for a 3G or whatever connection for those without internet. Think a mandatory version of Sony's monthly Vita connection fee (I think it's $14.99, right?).

Either way, these nextgen rumors are sounding like a greatest hits of all the bad ideas on ways to combat used games. Can you imagine if they're true, and your Nextbox breaks down? You pay for the connection as you have to to even play games, and forXBL subscription. You for whatever lose internet a year later, and suddenly have a $400-500 paper weight, not counting $$ spent on games, and peripherals.

Yeah I just dont see this being true, same with the blocking pre owned games. Just makes no sense

The war on used games just baffles my mind. Where is the war against used books or movies?

With all this talk about connection to the internet, makes me think that the single player experience will just be gone someday, won't it?

Then we'll miss the old days. Even more.

I don't think the connection to the internet is about online multiplayer, it's just that these days people are social even when they're being solo. People like to be able to see what their friends are playing or watching and like the freedom to be able to drop in and out of party chat if they feel like it.

I don't understand it either. In fact, in my case, used games means profit for the videogame industry. I was iffy about Disgaea 3. I bought it used, loved it, and decided to buy Disgaea 4 new. I also bought DLC for both titles. If I couldn't haved bought it used they'd have missed out on a new buyer for the series. I also put money from selling used games towards purchases of new ones.

I'd be more selective, and buy less games if I thought they HAD to stay on my shelf, or go in the trash after I finished with them. If that went through, it would kill game rentals, and I wouldn't end up buying a 10 hour game like Amazing Spiderman if I couldn't sell it later on. Where with the current system I did buy it as I knew I wasn't stuck with it.

As for other industries doing it, it's a funny idea to think about. Imagine your DVD being tied to the firstDVD player it was played on. No more movie nights with your friends, or girlfriend unless you want to carry your DVD player around (that would also mean no movie rentals). Maybe Ford gets 15% of the money you make when selling your 70's pick-up. Or you can't sell your used novel, and it comes with a device connected to it that locks your book that only unlocks it when connected to the internet.

They all just sound like such silly ideas when put in any other media, and IMO could cause a videogame industry crash if they implement all of that.

Thats something thats already done. When you log onto either the PS3 or 360 you can see what game they are playing and chat with them (voice on 360). This internet connection controversy is all about combatting used games

it would be ironic if it caused a surge in sales for Nintendo's Wii-U and push them forward when the others enter the next gen

It's not what I meant. It's that the connectivity with the internet is becoming so much bigger than before that I fear that multiplayer experiences is all what we'll get in the future.

Maybe at some point in the future, but just like with digital download only, there has to be a large enough consumer base to support it. Right now, a LOT of console owners either perfer single player, or have no access to internet for whatever reason. If you made games multiplayer only, or made connection to the net required, even for single player, you cut away a large part of your potential buyers.

I think they'll continue, and expand the current route of co-op, and multiplayer optional (outside of the rare online only, non-MMO, like Warhawk). Programming games is going to be more expensive again with nextgen consoles coming. It's not bright to suddenly chop off half your base before the game hits market after spending more to make it in current economic times.

It'll probably also extend the lifecycles of the 360 & PS3 even more.

If Sony and Microsoft both have this "always online" thing then I probably will get a WiiU, or at least wait to see what the Steambox is like.

I'll get the system since I'm always online anyways. But its stupid I know many people who just buy single player games for the story and have no online

Well, if that's true, it's purely WiiU and PC for me. Maybe I'll pick up the Steambox and/or Ouya if they gain any traction.

I would like to believe that people would move to more consumer friendly platforms in the face of such blatant anti-consumer bull**** coming from Microsoft and Sony (if true), but the fact is they won't. We consumers are a pretty ****ing dumb group of people.

Good point. I forgot about Steambox. Now is the perfect oppurtunity for it to come in and make an impact and MS and Sony would have themselves to blame if they let that happen

The Steambox will pretty much be the only option. I mean the WiiU is going to be left behind come November(or whenever the new consoles drop). If you want the true "next gen" experience its either the PS4 or Xbox 720 or a PC. You arent going to see next gen titles like the Witcher 3 on the WiiU.

As of now, without knowing anything about the consoles, im most likely to adopt the Steambox. All that could change tho, once Sony and MS start releasing some info about their consoles. I think the whole online all the time thing is super annoying. Its not a deal breaker as theres no way in hell im passing up on the next Uncharted, but still all the rumors and spec about the next line of consoles has been pretty irksome.

Well since you brought it up, it's not like I will be buying that anyways. :p

Steam does have an "offline" mode, though sometimes it is tricky to activate.

Haha thats just an example. Its really the only true next gen game i know about that has been confirmed not be showing up on the current gen consoles, which includes the WiiU
