The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

Different strokes, I guess. It doesn’t really matter now. We’ll have a new Superman soon enough.

I think we should prepare for a casting announcement that shocks and gets a reaction similar to when Pattinson was first announced. But then hopefully people open their hearts

I though he was just as bad in MOS. What exactly changed in BVS or JL? I didn't see any difference. Even in his other movies, he always comes across as stiff and uptight.

It blows my mind when I see others be critical of past Superman actors but defend this block of wood. It can't ALL be on Snyder.

Oh yes it can! It most certainly can! That d-bag, cultist hack should've never been allowed near Superman or any ther superhero for that matter let alone being given the keys to the entire DCU! Nice job WB media:furious: I don't know if Discovery is gonna get DC back on track but I am absolutely certain that they won't do worse than Kevin Tsujihara, Emmerich, Hamada, Snyder and the rest of WBM clowns.

When it comes to Superman, it's (IMO) 85% writing and 15% the actor. Take Brandon Routh and Dean Cain, the former (again, IMO) is a far better Superman than the latter but L&C -for all it's 90s silliness- got Superman far, FAR better than SR did, hence Dean Cain's CK/Superman is (generally) remembered more fondly than Routh's, or atleast that's the impression that I get.

Lastly, regarding Cavill, after watching the Tudors, MI and UNCLE I can confidently say that he's a very solid actor, unfortunately he seems to have gotten saddled with the "brooding man of few words" roles like sand castles, Witcher, Nomis, Immortals and tragically Superman (the very essence of a non-brooding, approachable character who has alot to say). Like Routh he was let down by a clueless director but that's neither here nor there and I for one have moved on and am totally ready for another big screen Superman because at the end of the day the character comes first and everything and everyone else comes a distant second.

When you see Cavill in interviews & indeed in other films, it's quite clear that he's got a lot more charm, charisma & likability than he displayed in about 95% of his scenes as Superman/Clark Kent. Which to me indicates more poor writing/direction as opposed to his acting ability.

He seems just as stiff and dull in interviews to me. He seems like a very self-serious, self-conscious guy, honestly. Which is why he would never be able to pull off a properly dorky or goofy Clark Kent, imo. There's nothing loose or laid-back about him in the slightest.

This scene in particular (from BvS) is always hard to watch. Is he waiting for an echo or something before he moves on to the next word? :o

I don't know if that's the case but I don't think it would have mattered anyway, it seems pretty clear from what little Daily Planet Clark Kent we had to go on, Snyder had absolutely zero intention of a Clark Kent in his films being a bumbling goof.

I personally hope Gunn doesn't go down the full on bumbling route, there's a happy medium to be found between a lot of the previous iterations of the character without going overboard.

I think he is genuinely a bad actor and one of the worst Supermen. I enjoyed the Snyder movies he was in but he is a weak link.

Hot take but I think Tom Welling is my second favorite behind Reeve. He has the warmth and the goofiness.

I think Corenswet has what it takes.

Oh I agree there was no version directed by Snyder that would feature that version of Clark. But I've seen every major role Cavill has had, and I genuinely don't believe he ever had it in him regardless of director.

And I too want a happy medium. I don't want a caricature Clark. I want a genuine farm-grown dork, like what Hoechlin plays.

Clark Kent, much like Superman, has changed dramatically over the decades starting with the spineless coward CK of the golden age to the most recognized "bumbling CK" of the silver/bronze age to the "cool guy, high school football star" Clark of the Byrne era and then the hard hitting/social justice crusader CK from Morrison's Action run.
I personally never liked the bumbling, walking comedy show CK, the spineless CK who draws way too much attention to himself by stuttering and bumping his way into everything and everyone. For me, Grant Morrison's social crusador CK is where it's at. While Superman is a reactive Superhero, Clark is the active hero. If a building is falling apart, Superman is the one who comes and saves the day but it will CK who investigates the cause of the building's collapse and it's CK who helps bring those responsible to justice. In other words, CK cannot and should not be just window dressing for Superman, Clark could be an outlet to allow the writers to inject some real world relevance into the story and give the movie/tv show/animation freaturing Superman a little extra 'kick' that sets it apart from the seemingly never ending superhero/comicbook projects innondating us today.
When it comes to live action, I really enjoyed some of Dean Cain's CK (even if Cain's acting left much to be desired) and Tyler Hoechlin's CK in his first appearance on Supergirl, where he had shades of the bumbling CK that most of the GA would recognize but was also a hard hitting, serious journalist that made even the likes of Cat Grant swoon. Something along that line would be pretty good for Legacy.

I have NO idea of course, but if I had to guess, just going by what Gunn has said, I'd say this Clark will be a blend of Clark from S:TM and Clark from birthright and superman for all seasons.
And I think we will see ALOT of Clark Kent, investigative reporter.

His Superman ( imo ) will basically be a boyscout in tights, which is good thing.

For all the " Corenswet is Cavill" chatter, he actually reminds me much more of a vibe of another British actor , Cary Grant.

Ironically, Chris Reeve said he based his fumbling version Clark Kent off of Cary Grant's portrayal in Bringing Up Baby, which is still a hysterical comedy .

So many killer picks here, but I can't believe how well Justice Smith feels for Jimmy Olsen. That's like the perfect energy for that role, haha. Patel's been my main want for Mr Miracle too, he'd be fantastic

I mean I get Debicki as Barda for heigh reasons but Gwendoline Christie of well known tall actresses fits much better.
I had been thinking the same thing and updated the post! I like Debicki better for Wonder Woman.

I definitely see Gunn using Debicki somewhere in the DCU.
