Yeah, that’s another thing that worries me. Phoenix is a great actor, but I honestly HATED him in the last two things I saw him in (The Master and Inherent Vice). He seems like one of those actors that directors just let run wild and don’t rein in. Sometimes that can lead to an amazing performance. Other times, you get Leto in Suicide Squad.

Most people (including me) loved him in The Master, so he'll be fine.

Phoenix is the best actor in the biz today IMO.

Really? I think his performance in The Master is a tour de force. Should have ran away with the Oscar that year.

No, I hated his performance. I found it over-the-top ridiculous. The whole time I watched this movie, I kept thinking to myself, “Nobody actually acts like this.” Same with Inherent Vice. I felt like he was overdoing it.

And hey, if people want to throw the old “Yeah well he got an Oscar nom so what do you know?” defense at me, I’d remind them that Leto has an Oscar and it didn’t help him deliver a good Joker performance. So forgive me if I’m a little apprehensive about this, even if you don’t share my feelings on those two Phoenix performances.

His performance in The Master was mesmerising to me.

I'm actually really looking forward to this. Low budget and something a little dfferent that will hopefully wash the thought of the Leto thing from my mind.

I'm here for Phoenix.

Same.

Pheonix being in this is the only thing I truly know is a fantastic choice. Everything else im highly skeptical of simply because the Joker should not have a definitive origin.

I really, really hope this is a home-run to the point that WB will scrap the Leto Joker and have Phoenix be in the Matt Reeves Batman sequel down the road.

The Letoker movie isn't happening with or without Pheonix's version. That was right alongside Cyborg and Deadshot as movies that I knew weren't going to happen as soon as we heard they were kicked into development.

I really doubt this is anything but a one off no matter how good it is.

If Phoenix is as good as I hope he'll be I can't rule out feeling the same way.

Oh come on. Didn't you watch Road Trip and think, "Wow, I wonder what this guy could do with the greatest comic book villain of all time"?

I actually wanted him for Blade Runner 2049.

So, let me get this straight: Reese Witherspoon fell in love with both Batman (American Psycho) and the Joker (Walk the Line)?

It might be good but nothing about this really has me all that excited, mainly because the Joker is only interesting to me when Batman is involved. Why I think Nolan's Joker was perfect was because he was an unreliable narrator and the counter balance to Batman. Anything before that isn't that interesting to me, even Nicholson's Jack Napier wasn't much to write home about in Burton's Batman.

Co-signed

Lets wait and see what this Phoenix Joker is like before we start wishing that. It could end up being worse than Letoker.

This thread is all deja vu for when Leto was cast. "Oh he's such a great actor. One of the best in the biz. So versatile. Loved his performances in this movie and that movie. He is perfect for a classic style Joker" etc. Then we end up with the garbage Joker we got.

What's wrong with being optimistic? Nobody here claims to know what the outcome will be, we're just hoping for the best. Including Leto we still have more great Jokers than garbage ones.

To be fair, I still believe Leto would've made an excellent Joker in a more classic style, or something more akin to The Dark Knight Returns. Too bad the one we got is so profoundly awful that they'd have to throw Suicide Squad out the window and change nearly everything about him in order to make it work. Unfortunately the damage has been done.

Who said there was anything wrong with it? I said its deja vu of the Leto casting. People saying and expecting the exact same things.

But if you want to discuss optimism, remember the track record of WB's handling of Batman characters in the DCEU. Personally its hard to be optimistic knowing who is behind this. Plus its a Joker origin movie without Batman most likely. Its like Sony's Venom movie without Spider-Man. I just can't envision it being good without key characters that make said character work. In this case Joker only works well when he's against Batman.

Even as an origin story. The Killing Joke still had Batman.
