The Joker Thread - Part 1

Jesse Plemons would make an interesting Joker, IMO

Dress like 80’s Bowie, with a face that will give children nightmares for months on end.

I still think Scott Snyder/Greg Capullo’s Joker is what we’re getting.

@Prison Mike if Plemons can get back to his Breaking Bad weight then sure.

You might be able to have both. He could be wearing darker outfits in some scenes and something more colorful in others.

I want the Joker to dress like a pirate, like that toy I had when I was a kid.

If you cleaned him up a bit and made the makeup look less like, well, makeup, you could probably get something pretty close to the Arkhamverse Joker.

I'm not saying I truly WANT it to happen, but it would be cool if The Joker in this trilogy genuinely scared me. Joaquin had his moments (mainly the talk show scene), and Heath kinda came close. Of course, it goes without saying that he still needs to be funny, but I'd be interested to truly feel creeped out by The Joker.

Joaquin's the only one to have made my skin crawl.
I think that's because he feels so real. Nicholson and Romero both feel pretty fantastical; Ledger was realistic too and could very well exist in real life, but Phoenix even moreso. The idea of a mentally disturbed man starting an uprising, culminating in him shooting a talk show host in a fit of impulsive rage isn't very far-fetched at all. He's very much in the realm of real-life spree killers, and I think someone even compared him to the Bjork stalker.

I just wish the movie focused on that more.

There's a delicate balance with it, as I'd consider threatening and entertaining as mutually exclusive concepts. You will be always be sacrificing one for the other.

Joaquin was incredibly effective at unnerving you because of how close to reality it was, but it does sacrifice the fun of watching the character. It's arguably Joker's biggest draw, and it hinges completely in the audiences enjoying the ride. As much as I love Joaquin, I can't say I necessarily "enjoyed" the experience. I was more in awe and appreciated at where they took that iteration.

Heath and Jack both dialed up their performances to showman levels. It made for incredibly appealing watches, at the cost of viewers coming away from those films as not truly fearing them. I'm sure this point can be argued with Heath. Scenes like the pencil trick depict behavior which should conceivably be scary. But everyone I know recognizes it for being unexpectedly awesome rather than anything scary. On the same token, moments like the "LOOK. AT. ME" during the fake-Batman clip proved Heath could have kept it at that menacing energy. You could always feel the air being sucked out the room when that scene cuts into the next.

The next actor has big shoes to fill. But nailing that balance may very well be the determining factor in whether they deserve to have their name along with these other greats. Force us to recoil in disgust/fear in one scene, then at the turn of a dime make us (hesitantly) cheer the character on in wreaking further havoc.

I think the weakest part of Joaquin's Joker was more to do with how clearly that character wasn't a criminal mastermind. His Joker absolutely had elements of the character's showmanship present (however awkward it may be up to the point Arthur Fleck completely vanishes into Joker), but I don't think it's controversial to say that depiction of the character most likely won't be pulling off the sort of incredible schemes and mindgames that we saw from Nicholson or Ledger's Jokers.

I absolutely loved Joaquin's performance and the depiction of the character for what it was, but in aiming for a realist depiction of someone losing their grip on reality and becoming a monster, the film traded out the mad genius side that typically comes with the Joker.

Whoever lands the role next definitely has their work cut out for them, both in the level of expectations that come with the role now, but also in making the part their own.

Starting to really dig the idea of Andrew Garfield as the Joker. He deserves another shot at a comic book character. But something different.

He’s got the lanky build for it and he’s very physical. Can play lazy or high energy really well. The hair is already perfect. Twist that face of his up and i’d believe him.

It might be the most unpleasant movie I've seen. And before anyone says "It's the Joker...you're supposed to...", I think it's possible to make a Joker movie that's fun and enjoyable, even when the character is twisted.

If Joker was the most unpleasant movie you’ve seen, you must not watch too many bleak movies. It still had a bunch of dark humour in it that made me laugh out loud. It even ends on a quirky note.

And no, the point of that movie wasn’t to show up and enjoy the experience. A lot of it is heavy. The trailers were quite dour. So it would be strange if people actually went into it thinking they were gonna have some fun. That’s probably why I was so surprised by the amount of humour in it. I definitely left Joker with a lot to think about, but me and my buddies were also laughing/quoting certain scenes.

Andrew Garfield isn't my first pick for the role, but the more I think about it, the more I like it. He's absolutely got the acting chops and range for the part.

Yes! He is the one I'm rooting for. I have no idea how he would play the part, which I find really refreshing. A little bit like how I didn't know how Pattinson was gonna play Batman, I just had a great feeling based on what a terrific actor he is. I'm tired of the suggestions that sound like "hey, this guy was creepy in this movie, he could be the Joker".

Casting Andrew Garfield as The Joker WOULD appropriately be very similar to Pattinson's casting as Batman:

They're both still usually seen as teenage heartthrobs by the general audience despite redeeming themselves in a lot of smaller films as actual dramatic actors.

He, along with Caleb Landry-Jones, George Mackay, Bill Hader, Adam Driver, and Willem Dafoe are my top choices at the moment.

I also feel like Andrew as Joker would be a casting choice similar to Colin Farrell as Penguin, where a lot of people might not immediately see it, but the idea grows on you over time and you mull it over.

Plus, like Farrell, it could very well be that Andrew would wear some level of prosthetics as Joker, along with the inevitable makeup that comes with every Joker actor.

Also- looking at this picture of Andrew in Mainstream, I kinda get some David Bowie vibes? Not necessarily in the voice, but certainly in the dressing and aesthetic.

That pic of Garfield says Riddler to me.
Chill bro it's just a pic. Oh, btw, I found a couple clips from Antiviral. I know it's not much but it helps get the creepiness across IMHO. I'm really digging the cinematography

Good but unlikely: Adam Driver, Willem DaFoe, Bill Hader, Will Poulter, Jake Gyllenhaal.

Good, more realistic choices: Caleb Landry Jones, George MacKay, Andrew Garfield, Lucas Hedges.

I’ll be happy with any of these. Nine actors is a lot.
