The Mass Effect Hype Thread

Graphics look amazing. Type of gameplay "meh".

DACMAN, I know this is a Bioware RPG, but this time the gameplay is actually smooth. It looks to play a lot like SplinterCell, only with more weapons and of course, the conversation system.

Don't write it off just yet. X06 is only two weeks away! :woot:

While I find it hard to consider people who don't praise all Bioware games to be human beings, he has shown good taste in the past, so I won't try to find his home address and mail bomb it.

When there are more than two videos for this game, one showing more than three seconds of shooting, more interest will ensue.

I think it's kind of sad that "more shooting" needs to be shown to get interest for this game. I'm frankly kind of tired of games where all I do is shoot stuff, there are hundreds upon hundreds of them out there, we don't need anymore, and we certainly don't need any more people who play them exclusively. I really hope Bioware remembers what made them their money and what put them on the map to begin with, and doesn't start watering down it's game for the twitch crowd.

But other than that we've only seen the conversation system, and if this game turns out 90% conversations, like Jade Empire, it will generate less interest than if it had some good action.

Jade Empire wasn't 90% conversations, what are you talking about? It was the most 'action' oriented game Bioware had done up to that point, and probably the first game where action outweighed story and characters. It's like people think that's the only type of video game that should ever be made, it's ridiculous, and it's not just a 'difference of opinion' either, it's almost immature. I've watched people playing Splinter Cell and get frustrated that they can't run and gun through the levels, and say "oh man, what a ****ty game, hahaha" and go jack off to some ****ty WW2 shooter that's been made 20 times before. People scream and cry for something new and fresh and innovative, and Viva comes along....and what, no guns or blood or M rating? Pffft, pass. I've watched people see Spore, get disappointed that it's not about controlling a predator and killing things, and just say "oh man this game is trash lolololololol!" It's pretty easy to see where the news media get's it's gamer stereotypes. I mean, my god, what is wrong with you people, it's like you only want one game, just released over and over and over and over and over again. Oh look, first/third person sci fi war shooter #4091321292301 just came out, let's go check it out man, we can take it back to the frat house to play! Goddamnit, stop killing the games industry :(.....

Conversations are to Jade Empire as Barrels are to NeverWinter Nights. There're just too many of them. I'm not saying they're bad in and of themselves, it's just that they can be overused.

You really don't need to be playing RPGs, seriously. If you thought Jade Empire of all games had too many conversations, then the genre is not for you

When I need to hear a 20 minute conversation just to ask someone for spicey tea, it's an issue. I don't mind long conversations if they have meaning, but junk like "outsmarting" the people in the garden, and stuff like that... it's all very poor.

The debate with the Knight was actually one of the most beloved segments of the game, and in addition to that was totally unnecessary. The conversation could have ended at any time the player choose, as was the case was 90% of the conversations in that game. In addition to that, 90% of the conversations were entirely voluntary. Don't want to talk to Black Whirlwind? Then don't. Don't want to converse with Dawn Star? No one makes you. There was nothing "poor" about it. If all you want is action, play another genre, RPGs are not for you. There's more to the genre than just tapping a and x fast. Saying there are too many conversations in Jade Empire is like saying there's too much saving in Oblivion. Faulting a game for a totally voluntary action is dumb, especially when the only reason to initiate those conversations is if you're interested in story in the first place.

You can stop with this Snooty Frenchman stuff whenever you like. I know what you're saying, I'm just telling you that if all Bioware shows of Mass Effect is it's conversations, not as many people are going to give a damn as when they actually see what PLAYING the game is like.

If they show people playing the game, they aren't going to care, they're going to say the same **** they say about every other good game that comes out, more action, more explosions, multiplayer, turn it into an MMO, head shots, and all the other stupid suggestions they have. I'm not being "a snooty frenchman", whatever that is, I'm just pissed off that most of my fellow xbox gamers seem to be content with the same damn thing over and over. I mean, my god, I can't be the only person that is ****ing sick of first and third person shooters, or ****ing sick of boring generic "murderthon 3000: the sequel" m-rated games getting hyped up or everyone playing the 15th iteration of "Storm Normandy" on the 231st WWII game.

Playing the game IS the conversations, it's gaining and spending experience and building your character and party, and following the story. That's what an RPG is, it's not shooting stuff, it's all that "boring" fluff that some of you seem to hate so much. If shooting things is all you want to see, or all you want to do in the game, then for God's sake don't waste your time with it, go buy Gears of War or one of the three shooters that are released on any given month. There's no reason for RPGs to continue to be dumbed down and turned into "action-adventure games with RPG elements".

I agree with you on most of your points, which are all very good.

Mass Effect is first and foremost an RPG, and that's why I want it. But they're not showing much of the world, they're showing a bar conversation and the different paths it can lead to. It's interesting, sure, but that's the kind of stuff I want to experience in the game myself, not have the gameplay demo quota filled up with something that doesn't show much of the world.

Seeing action gameplay shows off much more about the game. Animations, how menus work, etc. Much more interesting and much more informative. I already know how conversations work, I just want to see what the game is like because I'm interested in it.

Thanks WHF. The only RPG I've ever loved has been Fable. Not much for'em. But, what's that?... Splinter Cell you say? I'll give it another look.:woot:

Great! I love my woman so much. We were high school sweet hearts. She's not much of a gamer, but she'll play the Sonic Plus Mega Super collection or whatever it's called. She also loves HULK ultimate destruction. We have a house, we bought it about 4 or 5 months before we were married. We fixed it up and she moved in. Then after the wedding I moved it. I used to work at an armored car company for about 2 years but got layed off ( it's all good though they gave my a big severence pay and a letter of recemendation...I think I spelled that wrong, whatever ). I'm now working for a company that makes solar pannels. Great issurance, decent pay. But anyway she's my best friend, everythings great. We pray together, and read God's word together. I love it. It'll be a year this October. She's just about done with school. She'll have a 2 year degree in buisness management.

What about you? How you doin?
