The North Korean Situation II

Just to be clear on Food, and other stuff that China is sending to NK. None of that is getting to the people, all that is coming from China is to the elite, and the elite are paying for it...China is enjoying that little relationship. The "people" of NK are eating the little bit that they are allowed from their farms, and help from NGO's like Graham's "Samaritan's Purse"....

Looks like supposedly firing their missiles in commemoration of Kim Il-sung's birthday has passed. Now which day they could fire is now more unknown. Still don't think they're crazy enough to possibly fire active nuclear-tipped missiles and provoke a swift beatdown from everybody in the Pacific Rim.

Except they don't believe they would lose....

If they think that, then they are crazier and stupider than previously thought. It'd almost be like how the Japanese were in WWII, willing to die in war they couldn't possibly sustain long-term. You'd think they have a little thing called self-preservation.

Watching BBC undercover Panorama special on North Korea.

A BBC journalist went undercover this month to North Korea with some LSE students.

North Koreans know their country is poor and backwards but they blame that on outside interference. They blame the constant power cuts and food shortages on American sanctions.

Its getting harder for the North regime to control information in North Korea as mobile phones spread that can pick up signals from the south.

After the Soviet Union collapsed there was mass starvation in North Korea as the Soviets were a huge backer of the NK back then. A North Korean defecor said there was corpses in the streets.

I don't think there will ever be a popular uprising in North Korea. A coup, sure, but that would be military infighting. The people have no power.

The Pentagon confirmed that NK does have nuclear missiles small enough to attach to a ballistic missile. The reliability of said missile is slim to none though, and they don't think it can get beyond Japan. Japan, SK, and Guam are potential targets. We have moved more destroyers and F-22's to the region, and another missile shield to Guam.

Oh, and NK is still bat**** crazy.

Here's a link to go along with the synopsis.

I imagine the average North Korean who is brainwashed resents the military alot. The military comes before everything else in North Korea. All the resources and money goes towards the military.

I assume though that most North Korean families have at least one member in the military.

Most of what Kim Jong Un is doing right now is to cement his postion. Jung Un isn't yet in complete control so he wants to prove himself.

Kim Jong Un wants the world to recognize North Korea as a nuclear power. Kim Jung Un wants to be seen as the one who forces the United States to have face to face talks with North Korea. He wants the U.S to give them aid.

The problem is that he has to make good on some of these threats to save face. This is what the analysts keep saying. At some point he has to do something or these threats and his authority look like nothing but hot air. This is why he shouldn't have jumped straight to nuclear threats. Should have started small. Something he could make good on. Now he has talked such a big game that he has to **** or get off the pot. A competent leader would have known this. As it stands we are dealing with an overgrown child with a napoleon complex.

At this point, his rule seems damned either way: Kim backs down; the military lose whatever scant respect they had for him. Kim doesn't back down; his nukes get shot down on the spot and his military incompetence is confirmed in the eyes of his peers.

I do wonder what would happen if the US did shoot down a test missile.

It would either shut North Korea up, or start a war.

Here is the BBC report from inside North Korea if anyone is intrested

If North Korea fires a missile, it will already be a war, regardless whether US shot it down or not.

It didn't lead to war the other times they did, and hell it didn't even start a war when they sunk a South Korean ship.... so why would this missile be any different.

Yeah among other things they've shelled an island, blown up a South Korean airliner, and then there was that time they rather brazenly tried to outright assassinate South Korea's president with a bombing. He only survived because his motorcade got held up in traffic (a number of South Korean statesmen were killed anyway).

They've already fired test missiles. The Pentagon said they would only shoot down a test missile if it looked like it was going to hit someone. If its heading for the ocean we will let it fly...cause fuq those fish.

Whatever happens, I hope it doesn't end with us making a deal with NK to give them something. NK is like a baby. If you give it something everytime it cries it will learn that that is how it get sthings. :)

We can't help NK and justify this BS tantrum they have been throwing. Make them shut down all nuclear facilities, dismantle all bombs, and then maybe we will talk.

Exactly, if we give in. They win. And they can just keep threatening people to get what they want.

This kid is just begging for attention.

Obama should have gone on television, and said....
"If we deem that a missile from NK is a danger to an allie or one of our territories then we will shoot it down."

And never said anything else...just left it at that. But this kid is loving this attention.

**** the man-child; that BBC doc has me concerned for the people he's leading to ruin. That country looks abysmal; if you hadn't mentioned what your missionary friends learned over in NK, Kelly, I'd say they looked as if they didn't want a better life for themselves.

Nothing short of demanding N. Korea dismantle their weapons should be said during the talks. There should be no giving in to N. Korea. AT ALL. No compromise.
