Batman '89 The Official Batman (1989) Thread - Part 6

"The best Batman yet."

That "The best Batman yet" Pat Collins quote almost made me wonder if she was Warners payola critic, but there was a weird 1950s-esque backlash happening against Tim Burton in the '90s and it was like a trend at the time to praise Joel Schumacher's version as "fun" and bash Burton's version as "too dark".
NBC's A Closer Look With Faith Daniels [July 3rd 1992]...

Looks like all the special features are the same that are on these DVDs from 2005.

Wow, those covers are dreadful. I guess it was too much to ask for them to simply use the Bat logos from each film.

I think it's easy to forget that Batman Forever just hit at the right time... Mid-90's popcorn glitzy fun, full of action, that doesn't ask you to think too much.

WB probably knew it would age like milk, but it worked for that moment.

That kid, however, is ridiculous. Can't imagine he was too popular on the playground.

The thing that sucks about those covers is that the 89 Batman has one of the best movie posters of all time. So to see it get replaced by some generic artwork that couldn't have taken more than 20 minutes to create is eye rolling.

I couldn't give crap about the covers. They are not really that important to the overall product. I'm not rebuying them for the covers. Its the picture and sound quality on a new format is what really matters.
I've bought these 4 movies many times over on each new format.
Like each time these movies got released on a new format they always come with new picture and sound. Now
4k and also remastered picture and sound for blu-ray again too. What a spoiled fan I am.
Complely irrelevant that the sound isn't the original mixes. Just that it gives me a new and exciting way to enjoy the movies again.

On SNL last night disguised as Julian Assange.

i really like Batman (1989).. the main reasons why.. was because...
1. it was the first REAL dark batman film we got
2. joker was just amazing lol
3. The BAT-Turn..
i would list EVERYTHING but that would take ages.. plus.. i'm pretty sure its already been said... i really like this film

My local theater is playing this for it's 30th anniversary next month. They're playing Returns and Schumacher ones, too. I'm going to all of them. I'm finally going to be able to see the Burton films in the cinema. This is a dream. I'm so happy.

Hope you enjoy! I managed to see them all at the cinema when they were first released!

Thank you!
I'm jealous. I wish I could have experienced the hype and build-up this movie had when it was first coming out.

Yeah it was big, no doubt! But I'm jealous of you getting to see the Burton films on the big screen now! :yay:

Batman Returns was one of the first movies I ever had anticipation for and saw in the theaters. Would have been about 6 :funny:
I wore out my VHS of Batman.

Thank you!

I think people tend to forget or overlook just how massive the first one was. 56th all time adjusted gross box office.

Batman 4K remaster is being screened in theaters this month. Anyone going?

I just got back from my screening of Batman 89. It was absolutely fantastic seeing this film on the big screen for the first time. I just wish I was old enough to experience the hype when it was released in 1989.

Back in '89 was unbelievable first time round but really glad you enjoyed your screening. :ybat:

Yep, it was certainly crazy in '89 :yay: Glad you enjoyed it

Just got out the screening and it was awesome! This movie has never looked this good. The cinematography not being so bright helped hide some of the special effects a bit better. When the Batmobile is driving itself you can't see a hand on the steering wheel for example. I liked the new soundtrack. I've always had a problem with how weak the guns and punches have sounded but these new effects fixed all that. Now if you're a purist you probably won't like the new mix. The only sound effects I was iffy on were the ones for the Batwing. I've always liked how quiet the Batwing was. It makes complete sense from a tactical standpoint. However, with the new sound effects it almost seems like you could hear the Batwing coming from miles away. Other than that I'm very happy with the transfer. I also liked how vibrant the Joker looked.

Good to hear they improved gamma and colors. Cinematography and production design of this movie are legendary and deserve the best image quality a 35mm film stock can offer. BD looks overly bright and pink, with dull colors. I just hope there's no image smoothing. Film should have grain.

Shame about the remix, though. It probably sounds great with new samples, but I love "old-timey" feel of the original mix, it fits the visuals. Hopefully it will be present on UHD along the new Atmos mix. I'm reading that they lifted sounds from Nolan films for the new mix...
