The Official Batman Returns Thread - Part 2

Can someone confirm something for me? I just read that Burton used the opening panel of Detective Comics #27 as part of the first scene of Batman 1989, and used the opening panel of Detective comics #28 as part of the first scene of Returns. Thus, if the pattern were to hold, he'd have used the opening panel of Det. Comics #29 for Batman III.

That is true about Batman 89. The rooftop scene from Detective #27 was the inspiration for Batman 89 but it wasn't directly lifted. Burton took liberties. Not sure if that was the case for Returns however.

I forgot to mention this here but I bought the official comic adaptation of BR from 92.

Damn, I really need this.

Also, can anyone post HQ pics of Selina/Catwoman?

The last picture reveals something interesting about the design of The Penguin in 'Returns: although his appearance is quite removed from the classic Silver Age concept, his long hair and egg-shaped body does give him a profile and a gait very similar to that of an emperor penguin.

I hope we see The Penguin again in a Batman film, and I hope something is learned from that stylistic choice.

Ha, I have this and the '89 one on my shelf right now. A friend had it when we were about 5 or 6 years old in '94/'95, and I was jealous. Then in about 2000 or 2001 I found them both in perfect condition in a second hand book store. Easily the best film-to-comic adaptations put out.

I still have the B89 and BR comics that I bought in 1989 and 1992 respectively.

Ah yes, Oswald did look like an actual penguin in B Returns.

Just got Batman Returns ON BLU-RAY.

Will be watching this soon.

It really does look stunning on Blu-ray. The best looking of the original 4.

Would love to have one of those Penguin posters.

I've got one of the campaign buttons.

Burton really did know how to perfectly shoot Batman.

Just watched it on Blu-Ray. My, what a lot of fun. I find the Penguin plotline mediocre... not horrible, but lots of wasted potential with that character... but the Catwoman plotline is fantastic, near perfect, and Bruce's subtle arc is great too. And yeah, everything looked brilliant in Blu-Ray.

No question about it... The atmosphere in the Burton movies just hasn't hasn't been bettered.

That's obviously because Burton (and Schumacher) were making comic book movies. The realism that came with the X-men (lack of accurate costumes etc.) and Nolan's films was not comic book. They were real world movies with superheroes involved.

That's one of the reasons why I prefer them. I love that real world gritty tone blended with the superhero world.

It's a great combo.

Well it is to each his/her own at this point. I loved Batman Begins as it was a movie about the legend/origin of Batman. I only mildly loved the Dark Knight because it is what I see as a departure from the superhero world and becomes LAW & ORDER or NYPD Blue with tights and capes. Was Ledger's Joker phenomenal? YES! But there are Batman fans who read Batman comics who either didn't enjoy or only mildly enjoyed GOTHAM CENTRAL.

The point is that Batman 89 and Returns were much less grounded and much more reminiscent of the comics of the late 80's!
