The Official Batman Returns Thread - Part 3

I did read that Secret Origins Special comic, btw, and it's not much of an origin story. Just Penguin kidnapping Sharkey and recounting how Sharkey used to bully him as a kid and how he took his revenge. That issue doesn't even show his parents. So if that's all there was before 1992, no wonder Tim Burton/Mark Waters invented much of the origin.

Oh and that The Batman cartoon ran from September 11, 2004 to March 22, 2008, so Batman Returns still introduced the idea first (apparently, I haven't read all the comics so I'm not going to make any claim), and it then spread to other media.

That's not from the Secret Origins comic. I said the pictures of Penguin as a child they used in that video you posted were from Secret Origins, which mentioned that his father was dead and his mother made him carry an umbrella (which was covered more thoroughly in that previous origin story I posted there).

Secret Origins showed how his being bullied as a child by Sharkey molded him to being Penguin (Sharkey was even the first one to ever call him Penguin).

There was plenty of back story material there.

I know that. That's why I'm saying you don't know they got the idea from BR. They could have gotten it from The Batman cartoon which played up the Cobblepots were a big important family in Gotham. Alfred even had a history with them in that show.

Yeah if you want to say the movie had an impact on that cartoon, I won't argue.

I love me some Penguin. I would be delighted to see him as the major villain again in a future Batman movie: he is one of a few characters that has been significantly enriched in the comics in recent years.

Penguin was great in the Arkham games as well as animated series too. I agree I love to see Penguin return to the big screen.

I'm sure he was well written in the games (I haven't played them), but re-characterizing him as a cockney wide boy didn't really work for me.

I've always felt that DeVito was channeling Burgess Meredith's Penguin with his performance in Batman Returns, but with a darker, grosser, and more sinister 'polish'.

I don't really see that, I must say. Meredith was rather debonair; Devito was the opposite.

I agree. Not to mention DeVito and Burton both were deliberately trying to avoid being like any previous versions of the Penguin according to DeVito;

Upon their first meeting, it became apparent that the director wanted a characterisation that bore little or no resemblance to previous Penguins. ''The last thing I wanted to hear from Tim was that we were going to do the Penguin from the comic book or the TV series,'' recalls DeVito.

I'd love to see Penguin again on film, but he's a character so few people take seriously. Here's hoping the Gotham TV show rectifies that.

I thought Burton did it well. Nolan could have done it IMO. I mean both directors were able to take a man dressed as a Bat seriously.

I think Penguin probably works best a side villain most of the time. Burton's version where he's this tragic movie monster was probably the best way to make him a main villain that can carry a film. He could've easily been incorporated into a side role in one of the Nolan films, but I was never too bothered that he was left out.

Yeah, he works much better as a side villain, which is why I wish Nolan swapped out Scarecrow in place of Penguin. I think it would've made more sense.

Scarecrow was embarrassingly underused in all of the movies. :hehe:

I think Penguin has what it takes to be the big bad. Make him a crime boss a la Gotti.

I always thought Penguin as a main villain with Killer Croc in his employ would be a good combo.

Make him a mob boss in charge of the Iceberg Lounge. He's responsible for a lot of crime but makes it a pain in the *** to trace it back to him.

The Penguin is totally main villain material. There is some cracking good stories in the comics where he's the big bad. Ironically it was only after Batman Returns that his popularity started to decline in the comics. DC made him sit out the entire Knightfall storyline, whereas nearly every other villain in Batman's rogues gallery got a look in.

It was Chuck Dixon who gave him a shake up in 1995 with the Iceberg Lounge set up.

I think Returns was in some ways detrimental to the character because his plots and schemes are so loony and they change like every other scene. He starts off the movie almost seeming like a mastermind criminal but as it goes on he becomes more and more pathetic. I enjoy Devito's performance but there is a sort of inconsistency to the character in Returns that undermines him a bit.

I've been rewatching the old TNBA and Mystery of Batwoman recently...and God I would love to see the Iceberg Lounge in live action one day. Maybe they'll do it in the Gotham show.
