The Official Casting The Superman Reboot Thread - Part 1

Ive only ever seen Viggo as Aragon...so I cant imagine him as the bad guy. Is there a movie where he has been a villain or something?

You need to catch upon your 'Eastern Promises' then.

On the Lex Luthor thread, someone suggested Leo DiCaprio, which I think would be an unexpected, but based on what we've already seen, totally in the realm of what can and will happen.
I still think Viggo could be Lex but...

Here are some more casting choices out of "left field",

Tom Cruise as Jor El
Gemma Arerton as Ursa
Tom Hanks as Perry White
or
Denzel Washington as Perry White
Kate Winslet as Lana Lang

Javier Bardem as Non

and some more...

Nicholas Cage as Non
Steve Buscemi as Perry White
Brad Pitt as Lex Luthor
Adrien Brody as Lex Luthor

Gemma as Ursa isn't a bad choice actually.

Pretty much. Although Hanks for Perry isn't a terrible idea.

He'd just never do it.

The one thing that I'd really like to see more than anything is Donald Glover as Jimmy Olsen.

Actually Danny Glover wouldn't be a bad Perry White...

A black Mr. White...

I don't think any of the core Superman characters can be changed in race without it looking or sounding silly or awkward.

Not really. There's really there can't be a black Jimmy, Perry, Lex, etc...

Jimmy - Donald Glover
Perry - Jeffrey Wright (credit to Octoberist)
Lex - Idris Elba
Brainiac - Lance Reddick

It's not like race would change either of those characters' character traits so what would be the big deal? (Especially since they are secondary characters to begin with).

EDIT: Oh and I'm not thinking of their casting for PC reasons either. I think Donald would be a fantastic Jimmy and Danny just popped in there because of the last name.

Something tells me that either Jessica Biel or Carla Gugino is going to be cast as Mercy Graves.

And Jimmy and Perry are and always have been white, I don't expect the movies to change that anytime soon.

Man, I'm hoping they can still snag Viggo as Jor El.

He would be great as Jor El!

Even though Snyder himself said Viggo won't be in this film....he also said Zod was not going to be in it either right?

We shall see. I also wouldn't mind Russell Crowe was Jor El either.

Aside from the obvious jokes about Perry White being black, the issues involving Jimmy, Lex and Lois being black could be more awkward.

They all seem to idolize or detest Superman as some figure of perfection they can't live up to, and Superman is white.

It just makes things awkward when they are illustrated as Superman's inferior and also black.

I'd rather keep the race changing out of the Superman core characters.

i wouldn't mind a black Jimmy or Perry so much. not only are there no important black characters in the immediate Superman-verse, but changing Perry or Jimmy black would go a long way into making this film feel more modern.

Should've made Ma and Pa Kent black... :o

Very good point.

No, it's the cinematic equivalent of affirmative action. I've got no issues with a racially diversified cast. But don't do it at the sacrifice for the iconography of 70+ year old characters. There are other parts you can cast without the requirements of being white.

As an aside, there's nothing timely of skin color. That "modern" argument always bugged me.

The "modern" argument is bothersome because it has no merit.

Like I said, I just think Donald would be a great Jimmy regardless of his race.

Also, do you find nothing significant about America having an AA president?
