The last time J.J. Abrams had the Man of Steel on his mind, things didn't exactly work out as planned, but given his resilient career in television and film since 2002, the creator is in a better position than ever to make a hypothetical return to the property. However, despite the support of high-profile fans such as filmmaker Kevin Smith and many in the fan community, at this point, nothing is officially moving forward with Abrams' version of Superman.

"No one has talked to me about it," Abrams told MTV News. "Obviously I’m sure Warner Brothers has a plan for what they want to do."

"Writing that script was a long process," he explained. "It was a very passionate character for me. As a kid growing up it meant a lot to me. It would be wonderful and fun to see that brought back. I don’t know what Warners is thinking or what their plan is. It would be a blast."

Though the "Lost" co-creator and "Star Trek" director's first crack at scripting the Last Son of Krypton received mixed reviews from fans, it still has its supporters in Hollywood. Brendan Fraser, who actually suited up for a screen test for what would have been a Brett Ratner-directed film, has only praised what would have been. Abrams himself explained that while that particular draft didn't see the light of day, there's still a version of the script he'd enjoy he could envision being produced.

"That version of the movie—the one that was reviewed and vilified—was actually not the latest draft we had at the time and we worked on it well after that. I do think there’s a version of that movie that could be really fun to see," said Abrams. "You never really know. Everything happens for a reason."

I'm not sure how recently they actually spoke to JJ, but I remember a couple months back that the WB was ready to crawl on their hands and knees to get him involved... I think it would be a smart move, but dunno what obstacle Paramount could be in this.

This has already been brought up. Three hours ago, no less. Non-news at its finest. But I wouldn't expect anything less from the hacks at MTV.

\S/JcDc\S/ why not just copy and paste this into the Director's thread, and then PM a mod to delete this one?

Not a flame, just a suggestion. It is interesting news, but we would likely find it in the directors thread.

Abrams got the eye and tone for Superman, but the details of his last attempt did not sound like a direction I would like it to take.

But many times "epic" for him is endless slow camera shots with some slow music playing along. At first it worked, in King Kong it was just redundant and annoying.

Well, I like Peter Jackson's style anyway.

Better than the so fast and close up you cannot tell what the heck is happening with Michael bay.

Not just Bay....but most of the MTVgeneration directors.

Like your sig....I brought up how Clint Walker would have been perfect for Superman in his day several years ago....and almost no one knew he was.

You do realize that these are 2 incredibly different and arguably the furthest points on the end of the spectrum, and that there are dozens of capable, talented, and stylish directors between the two.

Ridley Scott easily has the epic scope of Jackson and the thrilling pace of Bay that make blockbusters fantastic

A director?

Anyone of us. ANY FAN AND NOT SOMEONE WHO SAYS THEY ARE BIG FANS,BUT REALLY DONT KNOW JACK.

As painful as it may sound, being a fan doesn't qualify anyone to direct, not to mention direct a good movie.

People....do not bypass the censor to curse....and do not quote posts that have uncensored cursing in them.

Oops, my bad. I guess I trusted too much in the censorship system.

I really like Ridely Scott's work.

Would not mind him at all, but I don't know if Superman is really his thing, but if he wanted to do it, with a good producer and writer who are familiar with the source material, I would like Scott.

Thanks Lee.

After viewing several videos of him, I have to say he was perfect in every way for the role, he was just born 50 years too early.

You may see in several of my back posts in the superman casting thread, I think I have a some good reasons on how his stature would have also been an asset.

This is the directors thread, so I don't want to Hijack it, but if you check my back posts you will likely find some of the stuff I have mentioned on behalf of a "Walker Like" actor taking the mantle, and how it could have worked well, even with him being a couple inches taller than Reeve was.

The infamous later draft that everyone talks about by abrams, has anyone actually read it/ is it floating around somewhere on the internet, just curious.

In regards to abrams, if this is from mtv don't they usually ask people about superhero movies then manage to turn it into "so and so would love to do this film". Regardless he has a deal with paramount and WB seems content on having someone they can boss around which abrams isnt that person.

Either way, its not like this court case is helping out, I remember reading that another date was set for October 19 in regards to a mediation or settlement.

Yup we dont know how the current court stuff is going, and whats going to happen once the siegel's judge retires next month.

Personally I think Abrams is more concerned with Star Trek 2 than Superman. I know he hasn't signed on the dotted line but I believe that he is coming back.

I pic J.J. Abrams because, after A LOT of thought - several years worth actually - I'm convinced he's the only one who can pull off the action a Kryptonian demi-god can withstand.

Which directors have been dealing with the harry potter franchise. I could see them taking a look at all of them since its already an established property, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned them.

he was the one to do slumdog millionare right?

Yep. He also did "28 Days Later" as well. Great director, but I don't think Superman would work for him. But then, I haven't seen him direct it anyway though. ;)

what about Danny Boyle?

That's actually one of the better suggestions I've heard in quite a while.

Another option could be the Coen Brothers. They know how to make a fun movie, but they're also great with drama. They're in a similar position right now to what Nolan was when he made Batman Begins, and I think they're ripe for doing a blockbuster.
