I feel like its pretty clear these remastered editions are nothing more than the result of publishers scrambling to get content out on these new platforms (which they weren't ready for / are selling way better than expected) so they can start cashing in.
Having said that, I'm 100% in favor releasing old games on new consoles, provided the ports are good of course. It makes it so much easier for people to go back and play games they might have missed out on before, thus creating new fans and making the franchise stronger. For example, I know for a fact that there are a ton of new MGS fans thanks to the HD collection.
I think it's kind of ridiculous that there are people that are against this. Are you also against old films getting released on Blu-ray or digital formats? Imagine how ridiculous it would be if old movies were never released on new formats and every time you wanted to watch an old movie, you had break out the DVD or VHS player. Yet with games, console gaming anyway, this seems to be the norm.
Minor rant over.
Well, I think will the elimination of backwards compatibility of the PS4 and Xbone this is probably more valid than before. But it is also not a good analogy, because of the cost associated with games vs those with films (though TV shows are getting pretty expensive). I also, personally, don't find the leap to be all that significant from SD to HD for games. Most of the HD remasters I've played have been kind of weak from a technical perspective. Of course, I'm probably not the target for this kind of stuff, since I don't really buy remasters of games I own outside a few key exceptions.
